Harris, Jenson or Freddie?

sarah13xx · 23/03/2021 16:11

These are our favourite names so far. Got to the stage I don’t think I’ll ever decide on one, keep going round in circles with it, please help! 🙈
Below are the names and their rank on the 2020 list in Scotland which just came out today:

6 Harris
23 Freddie
193 Jenson

Thoughts?

I have a Jenson. Hes 11 now. Haven't came across any others in school or any of the clubs he attends.

I honestly wouldn't worry at all about Freddie being a nickname. Personally I prefer Frederick but lots of names were once nicknames for other names and it's just how names evolve. Names such as Katie, Betsy, Lottie, Harry, Ted are all considered names in their own right. People will tell you that they aren't until they're blue in the face but my feeling is that it's just a case of prevalence and the passage of time.

Are you in the market for suitable suggestions, OP, or would that not be helpful? Sometimes the last thing you want is more options!

I love Harris! But it does look popular in Scotland. I used to live in Scotland but am out of touch now, so didn't realise it was so popular.

I think I'd go with Jenson. It is not downmarket to me at all. I live in SE England now and know one. If anything, I'd think you maybe were a big F1 fan, but that isn't bad. Jenson Button is very swoonsome to me and quite upmarket.

Freddie is fine, but it's too nicknamey for me. It is everywhere here, or was a few years ago. May be different in Scotland, but it is still my least favourite.

The Jenson Button thing was the only thing I thought of when I heard Jenson, it definitely didn’t sound downmarket to me but I suppose people are basing it on the Jensons they know 🤷🏼‍♀️ Really do love Harris but I know of two baby Harris’ near me, I would like to be a bit different and go for Jenson!

Very true about the nicknames thing! Yes please, the more options the better 😂 I’ve been through the top 1000 for Scotland but some names don’t stand out to you til you hear them a second time. I do have a longer list and they’re all nice names but I just don’t know if they’re nice enough for me to want to name my child it 🤔

Oh and my dd's name is number 60ish and think it was even lower when we named her and she has another one in her year. She gets Sarah K (for example). Doesn't bother me, but she has started correcting people now. "You can just call me Sarah".

DS name is outside the top 500 and there is another one in our small town Grin. So I wouldn't preempt the whole "what if there's another one in his class" thing.

Also once attended a baby group with two Odins. Their mums were like Hmm😬.

Haha yes this is true.. it’s just your luck sometimes 🤣 I have a very unusual girls name picked that would have definitely been the name if he was a girl. There is literally 0 girls called this on the new Scotland names list for 2020, it’s a Scottish place name. Im a teacher and there is a wee girl in my class called it this year, what are the chances 😂 I was almost hoping it was a boy so I didn’t have to use the girl name this year and have it look as if I’ve just heard her name and thought it was nice 🤦🏼‍♀️ But it would mean Harris and her name would go nice!

@EvilOnion

Ignore what a bunch of randomers say and use it if you love it!

My eldest has a name that suddenly exploded when he was born so despite going for a nice but not overused name he ended up one of 3 in his class!

He was "Name A" all through nursery and primary but he honestly didn't seem to care and it certainly never took away his identity in any way. Now he's at secondary it doesn't matter at all because they've all been mixed up with loads of other kids.

This is true, it can happen with any name within a few years of you naming your baby 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m hoping if I can’t decide before then, that when he’s born I’ll just look at him and know his name! Will be even worse if I’m still no further forward 🙈

Dislike Harris and Jenson. Sorry. I would choose Freddie but birth cert - Alfred

EvilOnion · 25/03/2021 19:51

How about Fergus? It has a similar vibe imo

My partner also likes it, could be a contender 😊

I really like Fergus.

I like Jenson, I don't see it as downmarket.

Harris is fine, though I prefer Harry or Harrison.

I can't bear Freddie.

Fergus is lovely. It's a traditional, strong name.
I don't know any. The only one I 'know is Fergus Sharkey....I'm an 80s girl. Think he sang, A Good Heart...?
I know you like Jenson and it's not popular in Scotland, but it will be ! Probably.

EvilOnion · 26/03/2021 07:52

@Amdone123 that was'nt that Feargal Sharkey? Funnily enough though I've only met 1 Fergus who would've been born in the 80's so maybe it was a thing!

I love it plus there are nn options if you/he wants to go down that route - Fergie/Gus being the obvious.

Amdone123 · 26/03/2021 08:01

@EvilOnion, oh yes, it was Feargal ! Not too keen on that.
Love Gus, as an option.

I am now, have been all night, and will be all day, singing A Good Heart, to myself ! I loved thee 80s !

@Cakepop9

I was scared to read this thread as I’ve named by baby boy Harris and he is 10 months old. We live in England and I didn’t know that the name was popular in Scotland. It’s been a more unique choice where I live. I’d heard of one Harris previously and just loved the name. It’s a name that also has meaning in Arabic and we liked that.

I thought we might call him Harry but actually we don’t at all. It just doesn’t go as a nickname. We call him Reese sometimes (or Reecy as he’s so little).

I’m glad we chose the name Harris as it really suits our little boy.

It is lovely and you’re lucky you live in an area where it isn’t so popular 😊 I used to think it was unusual here and only ever looked at the top 100 names etc but that was obviously for England 🤦🏼‍♀️ Who knew there was such a difference! It’s still my favourite I think, although now thinking about Jenson or Fergus too

Did think that about Jenson and if it’s seen as ‘downmarket’ by people on here maybe itl be chosen by people I don’t really want to share a child’s name with 🙈 if he’s the first one in my area though it really shouldn’t matter! Do like Fergus and I only know of one who is an adult, don’t know of any babies
