Any opinions on Astrid? Or suggestions of similar names I might love?

So far Astrid is the only name I've come up with so far that ticks all of our boxes - I love it, my husband likes it, most people have heard of it but it's not overused, it's not complicated to spell or pronounce, and goes well with our (strong and simple but very uncommon, two-syllable) last name.

I'm worried I'm not 'cool' enough to have a baby Astrid, though, so I'd love to hear any general opinions on the name. Pregnancy has me doubting everything and decisions just feel very daunting at this point.

I love Astrid and it's on my list should we have a daughter.

I'd recommend you don't seek the opinions on friends and family OP, if they hate something you love you might not use it and later regret it, especially if you're doubting yourself a lot at the moment. Keep it between you and your husband :)

150 babies were called Astrid in 2019 according to Darker Greener - for reference 76 were called Greta, and 17 were called Sabina, 5 were Sabine, and 4082 were called Olivia, the number one name! I don't think Astrid is going to boom massively any time soon.

Love Astrid. I was also going to suggest Honor and Ines, but was beaten to it Smile
I also like Jocelyn, I think the nn Joss is just lovely.

Astrid does have cool Scandi vibes - but I don't think you have to be cool to use it, it's a well known name! I'm not sure I'd be brave enough myself because of the "Ass" thing, the same way I hesitate over Asa for a boy - but it's objectively a gorgeous name and I'd love to meet more of them.

Agree Greta, Ingrid and maybe Kirsten? have a similar feel. You might also like Linnea if you like Lydia?

groovergirl · 23/03/2021 12:18

I love Astrid because of Astrid Lindgren, author of Pippi Longstocking. If you like Scandi names, Bryndis is a pretty Icelandic name that works well in English. There's also Sigrid; Sigrid Thornton is a popular Australian actor, so there are a few Siggies down here.
How about Aster, as in the flower?

Twizbe · 23/03/2021 15:28

I love Astrid and it was on my list for a girl.

I will say I've heard it a lot in the playground recently.

Popofmustard · 23/03/2021 16:15

I have an Astrid. I don't think anyone would say I'm cool Grin. Her middle name is one of the other names you had in your list.

As pp say, it isn't actually very common (316th in 2019 in England and Wales), but, it is mentioned on here A LOT and therefore I think there is a risk that it could do an 'Isla/Arlo' and leap up massively in the name charts. On the 'Astrid' threads someone always comes along claiming they've met loads but statistically that's unlikely in the UK at least. The pp saying they've heard it in the playground a lot has probably been hanging out in my local playground as my Astrid has selective hearing.

I've never met another Astrid but I find other people seem to feel compelled to tell me about another small Astrid that they know/have heard of (very much along the lines of my mum's hairdresser's niece's vet daughter etc).

A few of my 'list' have been mentioned but I also liked Saskia, Erica and Claudia.

I will say that for my DC2, we chose a name that isn’t weird but isn’t very common and I worried was a bit ‘cool’.

Three years on, I don’t regret it at all and I always feel weirdly proud when I say it (and I get a lot of positive remarks on it)

Go for it!

LookItsMeAgain · 23/03/2021 16:27

It's a lovely name. Do you watch episodes of "Bull" on Fox? Wink Wink

Ingridla · 23/03/2021 16:31

Astrid is a great name

shipsandgiggles · 23/03/2021 16:34

I love it! Such a beautiful name. DD was going to be called this but didn’t suit it when she was born

TempsPerdu · 23/03/2021 16:37

I like Astrid (and DD is a Greta, so I’m obviously keen on the Scandi vibe!) There’s a little Astrid at DD’s nursery and it does seem to be getting quite a lot of buzz around these parts all of a sudden (London suburb), but I think (like Greta) it’s too ‘marmite’ to ever become super popular.

Others we considered:

Aster/Asta
Rowan
Honor
Gaia
Rosa
Vita
Clover
Clio
Camille

Astrid is lovely. I also love Eerika but think Erika is closest I’d get, which I still like. Also like Ingrid. Go for it 👏

Kokeshi123 · 25/03/2021 02:37

I've always rather liked Agnetha, the Swedish form of Agnes.

I absolutely love the name Astrid what a beautiful choice x

MrsBertBibby · 25/03/2021 07:36

Astrid all the way. Loved it ever since I heard the name as a teenager.

IllNeverLetGoJack · 25/03/2021 17:19

Perfectly nice name. Go for it Smile
