How would you pronounce this name?

Asking for two reasons;

Got a colleague starting with this name and none of us know how to say it. (I’d assume Mar - iss - uh or Ma-rees). Also it looks very pretty and it might need to go on my list if I have a daughter, as it could be a could middle name.

I read it in my head like Maris.

But you just need to ask when you meet her.

DramaAlpaca · 22/03/2021 22:31

It's either Ma-REES or Ma-REEZ.

It's very pretty as is the other spelling, Marise.

ThedietstartsonMonday · 22/03/2021 22:34

I would say Ma-reese

Concestor · 22/03/2021 22:44

All I could see was arse. Mar-ee-arse? I don't like it at all.

purplemunkey · 22/03/2021 22:51

Who interviewed her? Surely they can tell you. A quick Google suggests it’s likely to be muh-rees. But, just ask when she starts to check surely?

Sunshinemummy7 · 22/03/2021 22:56

Like Maurice ?

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 22/03/2021 22:59

Who interviewed her? Surely they can tell you

Well, obviously you’d think that but a) she’s a freelancer coming in so not a standard interview process b) director referred to her as “Miss Davis” rather than her first name.

The first hit on Google is Muh-Rees but there are also hits suggesting Ma-Riss-a and Ma-Rees-a and even a Mar-ish-a. Oh and a Mah-Riss.

Obviously it’s not a big deal, I’ll just introduce myself first and she will reciprocate but I’m only asking as I’m curious now as to how other people would pronounce it.

Strokethefurrywall · 22/03/2021 23:00

I'd say Ma-reese but Marise is my aunts name and that's how we pronounce it.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 22/03/2021 23:01

@zurala

All I could see was arse. Mar-ee-arse? I don't like it at all.
There’s no “arse” in it Confused

Mar - iss -Ah

CakesOfVersailles · 22/03/2021 23:03

I would think Mah-rees but I see how it could be three syllables.

Firebird83 · 22/03/2021 23:37

Mah-reece

GeorgeandHarold66 · 22/03/2021 23:45

I'd say Mar-eese but the first time I read it I saw Maris.... like the potato. So either one of those. I'm sure she'll tell you though.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 22/03/2021 23:51

Thanks all, as I say it wasn’t just about the colleague.

If the consensus is the mah-rees/reez pronunciation, it’s going on the list for a future middle name for an as yet not conceived daughter Grin. I really like it and it can honour some special Marys in my family. And a bit of a change from the usual Rose and Grace!

Lovely name. I’d pronounce it to rhyme with Denise. I like Denise too even though it’s deeply out of fashion.

LadyCatStark · 23/03/2021 12:39

Maryse like Clarise?

stickygotstuck · 23/03/2021 12:50

I met a French Marisse once. Pronounced Mah-REES (stress on the 'ee').
Lovely name.

Also know a Spanish Marisa (Mah-REES-ah).

UCOinaUCG · 23/03/2021 12:56

I know there is no 'arse' in it but the first thing I saw was M-Arsey. I think because it is an unknown name the tendency of the brain is to scramble to letters into something they know.

Ellmau · 23/03/2021 18:30

Ma-reece. It's rather pretty.

KeflavikAirport · 24/03/2021 12:22

MuhrEEZ. If she’s French she’s probably not far off retirement age with a name like that!

Racoonworld · 24/03/2021 12:24

I’m sorry but I have dyslexia and I read it as Myarse like ‘my arse’ Blush

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 24/03/2021 12:26

She’s mid 20s. It’s Mar-reece like Denise/Clarice etc.

Really like it. Completely unphased by the arse comments.

pinkhousesarebest · 24/03/2021 12:27

It’s Marize. Emphasis on the Z. It’s late 50’s/ 60’s name in France.

Ineedaneasteregg · 24/03/2021 12:27

Another dyslexic who saw an arse on first looking!

Not sure I'd use it as a middle name in the future OP.
I'm sure it sounds nice in real life and she can pronounce it for you.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 24/03/2021 12:28

She’s British.
