How would you pronounce this name?

Asking for two reasons;

Got a colleague starting with this name and none of us know how to say it. (I’d assume Mar - iss - uh or Ma-rees). Also it looks very pretty and it might need to go on my list if I have a daughter, as it could be a could middle name.

My French native speaker teacher was Marise. 1980s.
Lots of Marisa in Italy but the ones I know are nicknames for Maria Teresa.

Barracker · 24/03/2021 12:32

The Maryse I know pronounces it "Mareeze"
She's French, so the r is pronounced Ze French Way

Barracker · 24/03/2021 12:34

O bollox, wrong link

Ma-rees

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/03/2021 13:38

Maybe I watch too much Countdown, but I automatically noticed the fact that it's a (not too scrambled) anagram of 'my arse'.

It just makes me instantly think of Jim Royle: "I paid a quid for these pants and I've got 50 pence-worth stuck up me arse!"

There's a very posh area a few miles away from us with a road called Mearse Road and I always think the same of that: it's the very last place that the Royles would ever be able to (or want to) live in, but they nevertheless still got naming rights!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/03/2021 13:44

It's a pretty sounding name, but I'd be inclined to lose the 'y' and swap it for an 'i' or even an 'ee' - Mareese. You'll still get a lot of people pronouncing a hard 's' sound, but a phonetically more accurate 'z' just looks inexplicably out of place to me for some reason. Plus, many countries pronounce 'Maurice' in a similar way, so you might get people confusing it for a male name.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 24/03/2021 13:50

No, I will be keeping the y to honour the Marys in my family if I use it. Really not bothered that some posters see arse.

I thought it said mar arse

So, Maryarse

Olga83 · 24/03/2021 13:57

The one I know is Dutch so the e is pronounced at the end

AlexaShutUp · 24/03/2021 13:57

I'm sorry, but it looks really ugly too me. It's much better with an i instead of the y, but still not keen.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 24/03/2021 14:07

Genuinely not a jot interested in individual’s personal opinions on my taste. I’ve a zero fucks approach to life unfortunately Grin. Was only interested in pronunciation and there’s been a reasonable general consensus for that.

By all means - that was just my personal thinking, but I don't have any Marys in my family, so I was going from that basis. As you do, it makes complete sense to disregard my arbitrary ramblings and keep the 'y'!

Please don't think people are making fun of you or your baby with the 'arse/my arse' mentions, though. It's one of the big benefits of the Baby Names forum that strangers can tell you what they think/see when somebody suggests a name: sometimes it might be arguably negative, and it's only individual opinions, by no means ubiquitous; but it could be that friends and acquaintances also think it but are too polite to mention it. Ultimately, it's up to you to hear what people say, take on board/discount it and then make up your own mind.

That's not a bad thing at all, but bear in mind that you're also making the decision/assumption that your child will be confident to be the same as you from a very young age - not just in name but in everything you choose for them.

schnubbins · 24/03/2021 14:32

I know a Marese pronounced Ma rays . Or what about Mirelle pronounced Mee ray . Love it.

Yep. I do realise that and I’m good to discount it.

My middle name is Titania. It’s never been an issue and I like the name.

My child will be who they are. I’ve not assumed they will be anything. I’m not that daft. Middle names are a tiny part of identity and rarely used. If my child hated it, she’d have my full permission to change it or not use it.

I have a French speaking cousin Maryse, pronounced Mah-reeze.
It’s a fine name.

AnonyMousely · 24/03/2021 17:02

There is a wrestler who pronounced it Ma-Reece. I like it.

Sandgrown1970 · 24/03/2021 17:08

Never heard of it before but it’s gorgeous. Very refreshing. Nearly had Elise as DD1s middle name - would think Maryse would rhyme.

Figgygal · 24/03/2021 17:10

I wouldn’t have a clue how to pronounce that I’m afraid

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 24/03/2021 17:48

First thing I saw was Mary-see. Too ambiguous, OP. Avoid avoid...

Edenember · 24/03/2021 18:00

I’d assume it was pronounced the same as Maurice.

VanillaAndOrange · 29/03/2021 20:14

To me it rhymes with fleas. I like it.
