If you named your children after family members...

...which family members did you name them after?

I don't have any children but if I do have kids, a boy would get my maternal grandad and maternal great-grandads names as middle names (or twin boys would get one each). A girl will definitely get my maternal grandmas name and possibly my mums name (my mum hates her name but there are no alternatives to it) these would be all be middle names.

Late father

DC1 has my mum’s first name as her middle name.
DC2 has my MIL’s first name as her middle name.
DC3’s name is one grandfather’s first name, which is the other grandfather’s middle name, & then his middle name is that grandfather’s first name. If that makes sense! So if his granddads were Benjamin and Arthur Benjamin, his name is Benjamin Arthur.
If he’d been a girl he would have had my maternal grandmother’s name as a middle name.

My DD is named after her GM's (first name = my DM's name, middle name = MIL's first name). My DS has my DF's name as one of his middle names.

Floralnomad · 11/03/2021 12:13

Our ds has my dads name as a middle name , my dad died 3 yrs before he was born , I doubt we would have done it otherwise . Dd isn’t named after anyone .

17caterpillars1mouse · 11/03/2021 12:27

Dd1s middle name is the same name as dh deceased grandmother, though she used a different name for some reason

Dd2s middle name is the feminine version of my grandads name

Would these children not have a father, presumably with some family names also available to him?

stormelf · 11/03/2021 12:31

Ds has paternal grandad as middle name, dd has my middle name has her middle name (also happens to be paternal grandmother's name). They both have maiden name as their second middle name so sort of named after my dad

GreenBalaclava · 11/03/2021 12:31

DD is named after my grandma and DH's grandma (first name and middle name).

Insert1x20p · 11/03/2021 12:35

DS has the same middle name as DH, which happens to be the first name of both Grandfathers (so that was easy!). DD has my grandmother's known name (which confusingly is not the name on her BC) as her middle name. I was very close to my DGM and my mum doesn't like her own name so didn't really make sense to perpetuate that but wanted to choose a name from mum's side as DS went along my dad's side.

VienneseWhirligig · 11/03/2021 12:50

DS is named after my granddad (first name) and DH's granddad (middle name). Only that way round because it flows better than DH's choice first.

skeggycaggy · 11/03/2021 12:50

Just remembered that DH’s first name is the same name as one grandfather, second name the same as the other grandfather, and the two names together are the same as his step grandfather. That’s 3 birds with one stone!

BiBabbles · 11/03/2021 13:10

DS1 was given a second middle name mostly after my spouse's brother, but shared by many men in my spouse's family who had a tradition of first-born sons getting this name. I liked it more than any of them did which amused me (I would have been happy to have it as a first name, but no).

DD1 was given a second middle name that was a variant of my maternal grandmother's middle name and this name and variants of it are shared by many women in my family.

DD2 was given a second middle name that is the feminine form of a name shared by men on both sides, though was mainly after my spouse's maternal grandfather.

DS2's first name is a variant of my maternal grandfather's name (who disliked his actual first name and always went by a nickname so I asked him his thoughts on this version) also shared in various variants by other men on my side of the family. He was also given a second middle name that is a variant of many men on both side including his father, as it just fit well there.

Ds has his paternal grandfather's middle name as his middle name
Dd has her maternal great grandmother's first name as her middle name

LovelyBranches · 11/03/2021 13:20

My son’s middle name is also my father’s name but coincidently, it’s also DH’s middle name.

DS also has my maiden name as a middle name.

Sauvignonblanket · 11/03/2021 13:22

One daughter has my mum's first name as a middle name. The other has my mother-in-law's first name as a middle name.

PurBal · 11/03/2021 13:23

Our son is named after FIL and DH maternal grandfather.

1990shopefulftm · 11/03/2021 13:26

DS has my dad's name as a middle name as he died when I was young.

MrsAvocet · 11/03/2021 13:27

DD has my Mum's name as her middle name.
DS1 has my brother's name (though it's also been given to multiple other people in our family over the generations) as his first name and DH's brother's name as his middle name.
DS2 has my cousin's name as his first name and my Dad's and Grandad's name as his middle name.

Marmite27 · 11/03/2021 13:31

DH & I have lots of common names in our families.

DC1 is named after my paternal grandfather (1st middle name) and DH, FiL and my mum (2nd middle name). DH has FiL’s name as a middle name and my mum has the feminine version.

DC2 is named after my paternal grandmother (1st middle name) and me, MiL and my DF. I was named after DF (feminine version of a name which coincidentally MiL has as a middle name).

Worked out quite neatly!

Enko · 11/03/2021 13:34

Dd1 mil and my paternal grandmothers name for her mn

Dd2 sils name for mn

Ds late bils name for mn

Dd3 feminised version of my grandads name for her mn

Murtaghjames · 11/03/2021 13:35

My DD1 has the same middle name as my middle name.
DD2 middle name is after my DH late Grandmother
DS middle name is after my late Dad.

I personally like a family connection to middle names.

ladygindiva · 11/03/2021 13:49

All 3 of my dds middle names are of beloved family members... Dd1 is my wonderful late great aunt ( more like a nan) which is also my first name, dd2 is my grandma and dd3 is my godmother and her gran on her dad's side, they happen to have the same name. I love being able to commemorate them in that way.

spiderlight · 11/03/2021 14:21

DS has my dad's name as his middle name. I'm an only child and we lost my mum not long before I got pregnant. My dad had been utterly lost, but the prospect of a grandchild brought him back to us and I'll never forget his reaction when I phoned to tell him that DS had arrived and what we'd called him.

SquigglePigs · 11/03/2021 14:26

My DD has two middles names - one is a variant of one of my DGM's names and the second is my DH's DGM's name. We knew by the time she was born that we wouldn't be able to have a second one so we wanted names from both sides of the family.

SenecaTrewe · 11/03/2021 17:08

DD has DH's grandmother's name for a middle name.
