Scout?

I'm 36 weeks pregnant with our second baby. We don't know babies gender.
My Husband and I LOVE the name Scout for a girl.
Just not sure if I'm brave enough to use it? Is it totally ridiculous?
I also love Maeve & Wren.

DD1 is Lara, which I still love and it suits her so much.

Sure. We called her Frankie Scout (The Sprout)

Again another Mumsnet clagner that we've had the sheer nerve to give her a 'nickname' and not a full name. But meh. I think in the past 2 years I've only been asked a couple of times if it's short for anything

Clagner?!??
Clanger!

danascully96 · 12/03/2021 07:41

Scout could be a nn for Scarlett 🥰 I would not put Scout on the BC — TKAM is what springs to mind immediately and that’s quite a shadow to live under all your life.

I also love the earlier suggestion of Serena! Sabrina could work too! But Scarlett has the S to T ending that fits best with the nn Scout.

Best of luck, OP!

I think Scout is fine. I'd just assume you were a fan of To Kill a Mockingbird.

Personally loathe Maeve and don't understand its rise in popularity, but I know I'm in the minority. I also don't think it matters if sibling names "match".

RedGoldAndGreene · 12/03/2021 11:02

I think Maeve and Wren sound better with Lara. As long as you don't have any other family members with To Kill A Mockingbird names Scout is fine unless you are likely to enrol her as a Scout later. Wink

I think that matching styles of name does matter. Lara is obviously a girls name and I think that Scout sounds unisex. I personally like unisex names but my dd tells me that it's a pita as people assume she's going to be a boy based on her name.

BackforGood · 12/03/2021 19:23

How do you say 'Maeve' ?

RaininSummer · 12/03/2021 19:26

It sounds like 'scowl' to me and very harsh . Not like Lara. Maeve has a softer sound.

crystalcherry87 · 12/03/2021 19:32

Horrible ugly name

JoesM12 · 12/03/2021 20:25

@BackforGood

How do you say 'Maeve' ?
Like Mave rhymes with pave

I actually love it, I considered it for my DD too for a while. However it is now my dogs name, so obviously I can’t help but think of a dog now when I hear it.

Stokey · 12/03/2021 20:38

DD2 was nearly called Scout. I do love it & still wish I'd used it as a middle name. I do think TKAM may be going out of fashion a bit due to the white saviour aspect, but it's still a great name.
Other names we considered were Xanthe, Tamsin & Sabrina.

BackforGood · 12/03/2021 20:39

Thanks. I've seen it written down before, but never heard it said. Smile

ploopypleepy · 13/03/2021 22:17

I love scout, it's first in my list for if I have a girl!!! I did actually get it from TKAM ... and yes I know it's a nickname. Still, it's a great name and if you love it you should use it

Lalliella · 13/03/2021 23:53

With Lara I would suggest:

Talia
Anya
Ella
Elsa
Serena
Sienna
Elodie

finallychangedmyusername · 14/03/2021 00:30

I'm afraid I'm not a fan of Scout.

Lara is stunning though - suggestions of her sister's name:

Nina
Maria
Nicole
Zoe
Erin
Anna
Chloe
Juliet
Ellen
Heidi
Anya
Polly
Tess

Lenny86 · 14/03/2021 21:56

I know of one and really disliked it at first, but it’s grown on me. Most people did ridicule it when they heard the bit announcement....I think it’s probably best used as a middle name and nickname

Piccalily19 · 15/03/2021 02:09

I know a dog called scout and she often gets called he, not sure if that’s because of her name or how she looks. Whenever she’s well behaved I say “good Girl Scout” which makes me think of the Girl Scouts (America’s version of girl guides/brownies). I’d put it as a middle name if it was me

alexdgr8 · 15/03/2021 02:12

No.

23PissOffAvenueWF · 15/03/2021 02:17

DD has a Scout in her class.

I’m going to be honest 😬

Scout, to me, is the sort name where I think one of the parents has only ever read and enjoyed one classic in their lives, and that was at school. And they’ve named their baby after that character.

23PissOffAvenueWF · 15/03/2021 02:19

P.S. I know I’m probably being entirely unfair with that judgement - it’s just what I think.

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/03/2021 02:21

That's exactly what I was thinking too 23

octoberfarm · 15/03/2021 02:21

Quite like Scout, but don't know if I'd be brave enough. Absolutely love Wren though Smile

JoesM12 · 15/03/2021 07:58

Thanks everyone!!
I wasn't sure how much of an association with the book there would be, it seems quite a lot 😂
I just liked the name, not necessarily because of the book!
Thanks for all the suggestions too 🙂

Of course it's associated with the book, because it's a made up work of fiction nickname. It's not a real person's name, it's a contrived nickname. The author probably had a horse or a dog called it and wove it into her novel.
