Scout?

I'm 36 weeks pregnant with our second baby. We don't know babies gender.
My Husband and I LOVE the name Scout for a girl.
Just not sure if I'm brave enough to use it? Is it totally ridiculous?
I also love Maeve & Wren.

DD1 is Lara, which I still love and it suits her so much.

It doesn't go with Lara. Lara is a very pretty name, Scout isn't.

JoesM12 · 10/03/2021 22:15

Does anyone have any suggestions of girls names that would go with Lara?
I agree it quite a delicate name and scout has a harsher sound to it

Your other suggestion of Maeve goes beautifully with Lara.

SirSamuelVimes · 10/03/2021 22:22

Good god no.

Doyoumind · 10/03/2021 22:24

It feels very American. Maybe that's because I associate it with To Kill A Mocking Bird.

StillWeRise · 10/03/2021 22:24

you need to read To Kill a Mockingbird and then decide if you want everyone to think of that every time they meet your daughter
personally that would be OK with me, but is it OK with you?

I have read it but not since GCSE. I don't see it as a negative association either!

I do love Maeve too! Our surname begins with an M which is the only things putting me off. But maybe a middle name with a different letter would break it up?

@IamnotwhouthinkIam

Lara is gorgeous and I think Maeve works with it perfectly - both are elegant, romantic/poetic sounding, relatively underused names.

Wren is nice, but a different style to Lara to me (more quirky/hippy). Scout is very much a nn for me (for any S beginning name?) or a fun middle name - I don't think I'd risk it in the first name spot/as a given name personally.

Thank you! I really want to find something that works well with Lara but also has a similar uniqueness as I've never met another one but it's not a name no one has heard of! Maeve is definitely a contender!

There are a couple at my kid’s school so it wouldn’t stand out to me as particularly unusual/ ridiculous to me. The connection to to kill a mockingbird isn’t bad (though I assume it’s a nickname in the book to the characters actual name)

Coffeeandcocopops · 10/03/2021 22:48

Wren makes me think of kitchens.

SenecaTrewe · 10/03/2021 22:54

Only a willowy blonde trust fund girl from California can pull off a name like Scout. It's an ugly sound and unpleasant to look at when written down.

MercyBodle · 10/03/2021 23:12

I like Scout but, like others, wouldn't use it for Lara's sister. They have such a different feel. You could use Scout as a nickname with any other name, or use if for a second name - and a family nickname.

Maeve and Wren are both lovely and work with Lara.

Other ideas:
Fleur
Pearl
Seren
Celeste
Juno
Ismay
Edith
Iris
Violet
Cleo
Audrey

pallisers · 10/03/2021 23:15

Scout is a nickname in To Kill A Mockingbird. Not her actual name.

If I had a daughter called Lara I would be thinking of

Juliet
Rosalind
Anna
Cordelia (or Cordiana)
Cassandra

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 10/03/2021 23:16

Scout?! No! Naming a child is not the time to ‘be brave’. If you need an adrenaline rush, go bungee jumping or white water rafting but leave your child’s name out of it.

Scout is the name of the fisher price dog.

I think this is the worst suggestion I’ve ever seen on here.

Maeve is lovely though and goes well.

minniemoocher · 10/03/2021 23:19

I can tell To kill a mockingbird was on the curriculum for gcse a few years back - someone mentioned Atticus earlier!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/03/2021 00:57

While I personally quite like alliterative names, if you aren't sure about Maeve, then other feminine, underused poetic/romantic names I think work with Lara:

Helena/Nell
Juliet
Julia
Tess
Faye
Eve
Viola (can be pronounced the European way as softer Vee -oh -la)
Rose (may be too popular?)
Isobel (ditto?)
Iris (ditto but has Greek mythological links like Lara)
Thalia (also has Greek mythological links like Lara)
Rosalind
Rosamund
Josephine
Genevieve
Isolde (may be too unusual?)
Christabel (ditto?)

Porridgeoat · 11/03/2021 03:54

Ruth, Rose neve or Tess would go better then scout.

Maeve and wren are nice

JoesM12 · 11/03/2021 07:15

Thanks everyone!
Some really lovely suggestions I'm going to share with my husband!
I think I knew scout wasn't 'the one' or I wouldn't have asked.
I do still like it so may consider as a mn if it works!

That's my mates dogs name.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/03/2021 12:42

Or if you want an S beginning first name for "Scout" - elegant Serena woud pair nicely with Lara or there is similar Greek Mythology linked Selene/Selena.

TeenMinusTests · 11/03/2021 12:47

Well, Jean goes fine with Lara.
So Jean Louise nn Scout is fine.
Scout as a name in itself is not my cup of tea.

thismeansnothing · 11/03/2021 13:03

Me and DH LOVE this name. But I wimped out from using it as DDs first name. It is her middle though which we do use alot though

Do you mind me asking what you went for instead? 😊

I don't necessarily want to name her after the character. I know that wasn't her actual name but I have heard it be used for a first name before
