Atticus?

What do people think of the name Atticus?

It is on my list for DS2, I do like it but can't say I'm overly wowed by it as I'm worried it'll be the "Jayden"/ "Tracey" of it's time where it was fairly rare then exploded in popularity before fading again.

Dh loves it and isn't sold on some of my other name ideas which he thinks are a bit "too different"/ "just horrible".
@oohyoudevilyou we also live in an area where the local accent drops the "H" sound.

I'll have to try saying some of the names I like with the local accent to see if that changes things.

Sadly even the negative comments on here haven't swayed my opinion, I'm still on the fence with it. I do think it sounds nice with the surname (double barrelled) but I'm not loving it.

I do think some of my other choices would get a more negative reaction based on this thread though. 😂😂😂 I was thinking Atticus was a safer choice.
That's exactly what you want from a baby name! Some people don't like 'safe' names, some don't like more out there names. If you're opinion isn't swayed by other people disliking it then that's a great thing

HerRoyalNotness · 10/03/2021 17:20

I like it and only know one, coming up for 11. He has a sister called Abigail. Not posh people.

MeadowHay · 10/03/2021 17:23

I like it, I've seen a few at playgrounds but I doubt it's that popular really.

Stokey · 10/03/2021 17:33

I like Atticus but think having it with a double barrelled surname would put me off. Just too many syllables.

toastofthetown · 10/03/2021 17:44

I have to say that I'm not a big fan Atticus. It strikes me as very pretentious, but in way way that indicates you might not have actually read a book since high school. Possibly unfair, but that's honestly what I think. In general though, I'm not a fan of names with a single cultural reference. Many parents of Atticuses were upset when the sequel was released.

If you are concerned it's a trendy name, I'd agree with you. It's gone from about four boys year to over 80. Predicting where Atticus will go from here is tricky. Nowadays, names seem to spike for a short while and then stop growing in popularity as soon as they started. For what it's worth I don't see Atticus around on baby name forums any more really, which is often where new trends start.

Atticus isn't likely to be the Tracey of this generation, but I do think that an Atticus will date to this generation. There is a classical trend at the moment and -us names seem more popular than previously, so he'll fit in with Atlas, Rufus, Magnus etc. I don't see it as a negative though, just a consequence of people who grow up at a similar time with similar cultural references with gravitate towards similar things.

daisypond · 10/03/2021 17:45

I know only one. He’s nearly 60.

VenusClapTrap · 10/03/2021 19:14

It’s the go-to name choice when people are stereotyping hipsters, isn’t it? ‘Little Atticus and Clementine eating Quinoa in Shoreditch’. Although that was probably about five years ago, to be fair.

I do know an Atticus, and whilst his nickname of Attie was fairly cute when he was little, it seems a bit ill-suited to a gangly tween. He hasn’t reverted to using Atticus though, yet. It’s a bit long and unwieldy.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/03/2021 21:03

I don't think Atticus is especially trendy, I'd put it in the same category as names like Caspian and maybe Lysander. I believe Atticus would have to reach top 50 to really date, at the moment it's too obviously linked to a classic novel and not that used (and I like it a lot btw).

Chilldonaldchill · 10/03/2021 21:12

I really like it but can't see it exploding in popularity or dating badly

MercyBodle · 10/03/2021 23:14

I really like Atticus, and love Kit or Gus for a short form.
Other 'us' names to consider?
Magnus
Julius
Fergus
Augustus
Marcus

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 10/03/2021 23:23

How can Cosmo be too posh when considering Atticus?

I agree with most on here.

I think you have to be all on have to be all in with a name like Atticus. If you’re ‘on the fence’ with it, you’re not going to be able to yell it across a playground.

Whatflavourjellybabyisnice · 11/03/2021 19:57

@Runkle

I don't like it sorry. Too try hard.
My thoughts too
inthekitchensink · 11/03/2021 20:01

Other parents will always think poor kid, his parents are wankers. And I love the name. For a pet.

DancingQueen85 · 11/03/2021 20:09

I quite like it

Whatsyourflava · 11/03/2021 20:42

I love Atticus

How about Laurence of Tristan?

Mockolate · 12/03/2021 21:32

Reminds me of To Kill A Mockingbird we had to read at school!
I quite like it, don't think it sounds like it's following a trend at all, quite unusual in fact.

MsTSwift · 12/03/2021 21:34

Big name to pull off. If he is quiet and bookish he will be stuffed with that name.

Bluenightowl · 12/03/2021 21:40

I love it.

I don't think it will become a name like Jayden/Tracey. I don’t think it will become a ‘of its time’ name like eg Noah either.

It’s a great name. Go for it!

Bluenightowl · 12/03/2021 21:44

I would recommend Jeremy, nn Jem

No! Jeremy is such a wet name.

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 12/03/2021 21:47

I love it and was on the list for DS.
Go for it!

giantwaterbottle · 12/03/2021 22:01

I think it's a lovely name OP and don't see it being super popular

pontiouspilates · 12/03/2021 22:03

I really like it. TKAM was one of my favourite books growing up and I've always liked the name. Definitely not Jayden vibes.

MsTSwift · 13/03/2021 06:57

The risk with an out there name is how the child will turn out. I have one child that would carry off an out there name with aplomb and a quieter low key child who would hate to have a name like that. You have no way of knowing.

Bluenightowl · 13/03/2021 10:03

and a quieter low key child who would hate to have a name like that

What do you by mean a name like that?
The child would accept their name as their name. It isn’t as if they suddenly acquired it.

I think it must be worse to have a name like eg Denis and be told you look like a Denis.
