Atticus?

What do people think of the name Atticus?

It is on my list for DS2, I do like it but can't say I'm overly wowed by it as I'm worried it'll be the "Jayden"/ "Tracey" of it's time where it was fairly rare then exploded in popularity before fading again.

Dh loves it and isn't sold on some of my other name ideas which he thinks are a bit "too different"/ "just horrible".

Hmm. I still have an attachment to Atticus that does indeed date back to GCSE English literature. I've re-read TKAM since, and still loved it. However, I also read Go Set A Watchman, and I couldn't use the name after that - he just wasn't quite the hero that I wanted him to be.

HappyTrain · 10/03/2021 12:43

I absolutely LOVE it, I'm not having any more but that would 100% be my boy choice!!

KirstenBlest · 10/03/2021 14:04

It is too closely linked to the novel. How about Lennie?

MadamMiddle · 10/03/2021 14:10

Don't like it personally, sorry

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/03/2021 14:17

There are a good few little Atticuses around here (east London) but they are older, 5 or 6 years old. So maybe it has peaked?

I don't think it's chavvy. They seem to have siblings called Bo, Clement, Magnus, Alma, Wilfred etc, and mothers with carefully curated dungarees and trainers.

Coldwinterahead1 · 10/03/2021 14:18

Reminds me of Rotten Romans

SnowyBranches · 10/03/2021 14:20

@runkle @lostinthewilderness

What does "try hard" mean in the context of names? Trying too hard to do what? I've never understood that comment. And I speak as someone whose children all have top 20 names.

KirstenBlest · 10/03/2021 14:38

Like you have tried hard to think of an imaginative, meaningful name that shows how educated and cultured you are.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 10/03/2021 15:13

I like it. I know of only one and his siblings are Monty and Henrietta - it has that kind of vibe to me and is unlikely to get overly trendy.

oohyoudevilyou · 10/03/2021 15:18

I know one, and it's always shortened to "Atti". We live in an area where everyone drops aitches, so it sounds like it should be Hatty. He's also an over-confident and spirited child Grin, so no I don't like it.

ClearMountain · 10/03/2021 15:25

If you want a “Mockingbird” name I would recommend Jeremy, nn Jem. It’s a bit less obvious than Atticus.

dootdoot · 10/03/2021 15:27

I like it but I'm in the minority apparently, but they're your child!

Ro198 · 10/03/2021 15:29

Love it, one of my favourite names

GinaStan · 10/03/2021 15:36

Hello, I quite like it, but it's becoming more popular and might become a Noah. I'll give you the sacred name I would have called DS if husband allowed. Its not popping yet so shhh and delete this thread 😀. It's v posh. Introducing Cosmo...!

Brilliant!
Strokethefurrywall · 10/03/2021 15:38

Love it! On my list for my imaginary 3rd son, along with Griffin and Vaughn

Warrickdaviesasplates · 10/03/2021 15:39

@oohyoudevilyou we also live in an area where the local accent drops the "H" sound.

I'll have to try saying some of the names I like with the local accent to see if that changes things.

Sadly even the negative comments on here haven't swayed my opinion, I'm still on the fence with it. I do think it sounds nice with the surname (double barrelled) but I'm not loving it.

I do think some of my other choices would get a more negative reaction based on this thread though. 😂😂😂 I was thinking Atticus was a safer choice.

@GinaStan my cousin was almost called Cosmo! Apparently my uncle was very insistent that he wasn't using that name and he ended up named after my great grandad instead. (I think he would have suited Cosmo though)

Aw cool! I've only known one and he was called Cozzie 😀

Could it be a contender?

Warrickdaviesasplates · 10/03/2021 15:56

@GinaStan sadly I do think Cosmo might be a little bit too posh for us. But thanks for the suggestion.

Not loving it I have to say - sounds like he should be leading some greeks into battle. And it does sound a bit pretentious to me but depends what your social group is like and honestly if you like it people will get used to it. I went to a pretty dodgy school with a kid called Digby and no-one ever really said anything - it was just his name. You could always go with a more "standard" middle name so he has some options! You can't predict which names will take off really so probably not worth overthinking it and there's so much variety these days that you're unlikely to end up with him in a whole class of Atticuses (or is that Attici?)

OloBo · 10/03/2021 16:09

One of my all time favourite names but was never brave enough to use

mimofboy2 · 10/03/2021 16:11

I love Atticus And want s it for my ds2 but I couldn't get DH onboard

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/03/2021 16:19

I know a lad called Atticus. He's fab - and his mum is the absolute opposite of try-hard. It's a very cool name 🙂
