Seriously considering this name. I see it suggested in passing a lot on here but not really discussed, so wondering what people's thoughts are.

I like that it's simple, no abbreviations, pretty timeless. Only been in the top 100 one year (60s).

However it is hard to imagine a baby Guy and it does sound quite middle aged.

I felt the same about Ds1 similarly "dated" name (John) and we get lots of Hmm looks and "oh my uncle/grandad/dad is called John", but I like that we haven't met another and everyone can say and spell it.

Thanks for reading!

Lovely name. A classic.

FawnDrench · 07/03/2021 18:32

Clive.

It's a family favourite here. Perfect for any age, baby to man. It won't date, isn't over-used and goes well alongside John.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/03/2021 19:54

I love the name John - it's a real classic so I can't understand how people can find it dated (it's just not super popular the way it was 60 years ago).

Guy is okay but I couldn't use it personally as I can't get past that fact it's another slang for bloke/chap.

Like pp suggest, could you consider Hugh instead? Has a similar feel to John and Guy, classic/traditional and not overused with a nice sound imo. Charles would also work well with John, although it's a bit more popular.

I like it. The only one I know would be about 16 now but I met him a few times only - as a baby and toddler - and the name never seemed odd. It's not my style as I prefer longer names but I think, along with Jude and Hugh, it's the nicest one-syllable boys' name.

WildBluebell · 08/03/2021 17:44

Guy is a generic word. "Hey guys!"

MondeoFan · 08/03/2021 17:49

It's a nice short name, not overused and pretty faultless I'd say

AlwaysLatte · 08/03/2021 17:55

It's lovely, it was a great uncle's name and one we considered.

IslaRoseGraceEtc · 08/03/2021 21:31

Funnily enough I don't mind the "hi guys" implication but I can't get over Hugh sounding like You! Hey You, what's your name?! Yeah You!

I like it, would be way better being called an unusual name like Guy at school than having the same name as other boys in the class. We have a pet sheep called Guy 😂 three letter names are my favourite!

CautiousBlonde · 09/03/2021 20:09

I like it too.
Another like it is Ryan 💚

Yes, Guy is a really good choice. And I just love the name John! Guy and John sound like a lovely pair of brothers. I used to work with the most gorgeous Guy - a tall, muscular, handsome, well-spoken and intelligent police officer.

My friend, a primary teacher, had a little boy named Guy in her class. When she spoke to his mother for the first time, she was startled to discover the boy’s name was pronounced “Goo-ee” as the mum had apparently never heard it uttered aloud before choosing it.

I think this is apocryphal. My grandma told me this same story over 35 years ago.

I have a Guy. Sounded fine as a baby, in fact he was known as ‘baby Guy’ for a bit. He’s now 7 and it really suits him. Know a few older ones our generation and since met another 7 year old Guy.

RosesAndHellebores · 09/03/2021 21:48

I think John and Guy are equally fabulous. Guy's particularly pertinent if you happen to be Catholic. Another short name due a come back is Ian. Mark?

MrsMackesy · 11/03/2021 17:07

PS Some years ago now but Guy was a gorilla at London Zoo. He was a legend so I don't mind the association with the name!

lobsteroll · 11/03/2021 17:28

I really like it. I know an adult Guy (known since teenage years and suited him then as well).

I also like the name John. They are both good solid names. Well known but not too "popular". Lovely

PollyGray · 11/03/2021 17:33

My DS's middle name is Guy, he's not keen but I love it.

PurBal · 11/03/2021 19:39

Love it. Love John too.
