Anyone with/know a Daphne?

Will she become Daffy? Is that a reason not to use it? I think it's such a beautiful name but wondered if this nickname ruins it. I actually think Daffy is quite cute but not sure I'd feel that way if it was my nickname.

We have one at daycare. She’s always Daphne.

Greygreenblue · 07/03/2021 04:07

I knew one as a baby who must be 4 now. Her mother never called her Daphne though. She was a twin, the other one was a boy. Her mother always called her “the girl”

Squeakerfoot · 07/03/2021 08:44

I know a baby Daphne. She's Daph for short.

I love it. It is predicted to be the fastest rising girls name this year after Bridgerton though! (May not bother you)

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 07/03/2021 08:53

I know a Daphne in her mid 60s, always called by her full name. It just doesn’t sound like a name that needs shortening, because the stress is at the end.

Beautiful name. I agree with pp who predict a dramatic rise in popularity after Bridgerton. It was already on a dramatic upward trajectory. It has a very different feel but in terms of explosive popularity I think it’s the new Arya.

I’ve never heard it pronounced this way. Surely it’s DAF-nee, rather than daf-NEE.

I know one in her 60’s, everyone calls her Daff.

Evasmissingletter · 07/03/2021 09:01

Next door neighbours boxer dog... she suits the name as well!

ghislaine · 07/03/2021 09:05

I know a five year old Daphne. Never heard her called anything but the full version. Both my children have names that are commonly shortened - think Alfred/Alfie and Christopher/Chris. We have always used the long version and they now correct adults who use the short version.

JellyfishandShells · 07/03/2021 09:06

My late mother in law - shortened to Daff by some ( though not by her daughters in law ! ) .

I don’t like Daffy - thinking of the cartoon duck and the alternative meaning of it being ditzy. But Daffie, which I had never heard of before, has a sweet charm to it. Weird, just a change in the spelling but not the pronunciation. .

One of my BFs is named Daphne. I've known her since our teens and she's always called Daphne.

weebarra · 07/03/2021 09:45

I really like Daphne and don't know any. I liked the spelling Dafne but looked it up and it's an eating program for T1 diabetes so probably not a great version!

Drunkenmonkey · 07/03/2021 16:58

Thanks for your comments everyone. It's one of our front runners. Not sure how well it goes with our two DS's Irish names though.

It's my 'never used' girls name 😭 My last dc was a boy so it will sit on the shelf forever.

Twizbe · 07/03/2021 17:18

My DD is at nursery with a daphne which is just that, it's not shortened I don't think.!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/03/2021 17:19

Not yet, but I would think there will be quite a few after Bridgerton.

Evenstar · 07/03/2021 17:22

I have only met one, she would be in her 60’s now and was always known as Dee

je4852 · 07/03/2021 17:24

It was my mother's name and is my daughter's middle name. Mum was shortened when nephews and nieces spoke to 'Aunty Daph' but no one else ever shortened it. She was named after Daphne Du Maurier. My daughter likes having it as one of her names.

Pogostemon · 07/03/2021 22:38

It’s my grandmother’s name. Never anything but the full version.
