Anyone with/know a Daphne?

Will she become Daffy? Is that a reason not to use it? I think it's such a beautiful name but wondered if this nickname ruins it. I actually think Daffy is quite cute but not sure I'd feel that way if it was my nickname.

No I don't, it's a lovely name. I do however have a pregnant gf who has it on her list. Bridgerton, Peaky Blinders, Normal People, celebrities and their children in general sway the tides in name interest and trends. In England I expect there to be an increase in Daphnes, Penelopes, Marinas, Mariannes, Adas and Eloises etc.

I k now an 8 year old Daphne - never heard anyone call her anything other than Daphne!

JorisBonson · 06/03/2021 11:19

Immediately makes me think of Daphne Broon, but this won't be an issue if you aren't in Scotland Grin

Weedsnseeds1 · 06/03/2021 11:20

I know a Daphne in her 30s. It doesn't get shortened.

changi · 06/03/2021 11:23

I know one. She's early 20s and Chinese. If that makes any difference.

Whatsyourflava · 06/03/2021 11:23

I know an adult one. Doesn't get shortened

Pixilicious · 06/03/2021 11:33

Lovely name.

HurricaneBitch · 06/03/2021 11:34

I know one, she's Dutch. I've known her 36 and have never heard anyone call her anything other than Daphne.

HummusAndCarrotSticks · 06/03/2021 11:37

I know two. I think they just get Daphne. But they're still quite little. Not sure how it will change when they start secondary school. I can definitely imagine Daph happening as some people will shorten anything! I knew an Iain who got "ee" at university Confused.

FWIW, I don't mind Daph. Makes me think of Daffodil.

HurricaneBitch · 06/03/2021 11:37

*36 years.

Actually I know another's who is in her 80's, her daughter calls her Daffers but that's just a pet name used sparingly.

sashagabadon · 06/03/2021 11:46

It’s also a spring flowering shrub with lovely scent so I think it’s a great name for that reason too. Especially an April/ may baby girl

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 06/03/2021 11:47

Am I the only one who thinks of Scooby Doo & Malory Towers?

AnyaMoondial · 06/03/2021 11:58

Yep Mallory Towers for me too. And the cafe in neighbours a very long time ago. It’s a good name.

Kitkat151 · 06/03/2021 12:04

I think it’s lovely.....it was on the short list for my 2nd grandaughter

EdgeOfACoin · 06/03/2021 13:35

I knew a Daphne a long time ago. We were about 18 at the time. She was always called Daff or Daffers.

MySocalledLoaf · 06/03/2021 13:43

A 4 year old, no shortening so far.

mamablondie33 · 06/03/2021 15:45

It’s lovely but Bridgerton is going to make it super trendy just you watch

DramaAlpaca · 06/03/2021 15:52

Missing the point, but I've loved Daphne ever since Scooby Doo Grin

I've never met a real life one.

danascully96 · 06/03/2021 22:08

Scooby Doo is a great namesake ;) Daphne is a great name and I never thought anything of it when I met a sharp, grounded girl with the name. It's glam, but it can fit anyone.

Daffodil is a cute nn for when at home! People will find anything to bully someone over, so I wouldn't think Daffy should be that big of a deal.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 06/03/2021 22:09

I loved Daphne- my husband said no, still gutted!
I prob would have used Daffy at times.

SnoozyBoozy · 06/03/2021 22:10

I know one in her 80s - she's either Daphne or Daph/Daff

RoseMartha · 06/03/2021 22:49

The only Daphne's I know are in their 70's.

They are both called by their full name.

amanzapanza · 07/03/2021 02:24

This is top of my list for my daughter. I love it and think Daffie is quite cute x

Ruthietuthie · 07/03/2021 02:53

I love the name Daphne. It also, surprisingly to me, works in all sorts of international contexts. Defne, a name with very similar pronunciation, is a popular Turkish girl's name, for example.
The Daphne and the Defne I know don't have their names shortened.

therocinante · 07/03/2021 03:15

It's lovely but about to be very popular because of Bridgerton, if that bothers you.
