I’ve had the name Cornelia stuck in my head for the last few weeks and it’s becoming a favourite of mine. What do you think of Cornelia?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
bridgetreilly · 04/03/2021 22:10

I really like Cordelia, but I'm not sold on Cornelia.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 05/03/2021 04:18

I hate both Cornelia and Cordelia. Cornelia reminds me of smelly feet and Cordelia of umbilical cords. And nickname options: Corny or Cordy. Or Neil. Blush

Chunkymenrock · 05/03/2021 04:20

Truly awful I'm afraid.

CoffeeAndCaramel · 05/03/2021 04:24

Sorry but it's absolutely awful OP

SabrinaTheMiddleAgedBitch · 05/03/2021 05:41

Sorry but it makes me think of cornea. Cordelia is slightly better but not a fan of either.

Its personal taste though. I have a Chloe and a Abigail, frequently see people saying they are awful names on here. If you like it, use it

MrsMaryClausFace · 05/03/2021 05:45

I knew a Corneilius when I was little, everyone called him Corny. If you can live with that as a nickname?

MuddleMoo · 05/03/2021 09:11

Ophielia?

MuddleMoo · 05/03/2021 09:13

Ophelia sorry

Nell96 · 05/03/2021 23:06

I really dislike it - it's the 'corn' bit, it just sounds 'mealy'. Also dislike Amelia and Cordelia - I just think of cordial. I prefer Camilla, Camille, Camellia, Karina, Annora. How about Cora, Coral, Coralie, Corinna, Cara?

KirstenBlest · 06/03/2021 12:07

I like i but with names like Amelia, Emilia and Aurelia so popular, all i hear is EEL-ee-a.
Cordelia is nicer.

PattyPan · 06/03/2021 12:10

It’s ok but doesn’t shorten well (Corny?). I also prefer Cordelia - it’s what Anne always wishes she were called in Anne of Green Gables Smile

as141 · 06/03/2021 12:10

makes me think of cornflakes sorry

flamingomingeo · 07/03/2021 20:23

I like it, but then I love Cornelia Street by Taylor Swift.

mulberry69 · 07/03/2021 20:25

Not nice

Reinventinganna · 07/03/2021 20:26

Beautiful. It reminds me of the little girl in Santa Claus the movie!

Reinventinganna · 07/03/2021 20:27

Nell would be a good nn.

Reinventinganna · 07/03/2021 20:27

Or obviously Lia.

Loopyloututu2 · 07/03/2021 20:28

Im sure there’s a film with a girl called Cornelia and the other kids call her “Corny” to be mean! I can’t think what it is...
I don’t like it, Cordelia is marginally better but they both remind me of very hard-faced matronly old harridans for some reason!

Sidesaladofchips · 07/03/2021 20:30

No, Cornelia is awful. Smelly corny cornflakes. Smelly corny feet. So much teasing/bullying potential.

Cordelia is OK. But I don't love that either.

In fact I dislike most names ending in "-elia" but there you go!

toastofthetown · 07/03/2021 20:39

@flamingomingeo that song is the biggest reason for my love of the name. Especially the live from Paris version 🥰 No cornflakes or stinky feet there!

OP posts:
SummaLuvin · 07/03/2021 20:57

Like I said, not my favourite, solid 3 out of 5. But I don't recall seeing the mumsnet jury so vehemently against a normal name. Cornelia is not modern, new, out there, unusual, or niche at all. Don't worry OP perhaps they all have stinky feet so have a paranoia complex.

Vallmo47 · 07/03/2021 21:00

My niece in Sweden is called Cornelia. It’s a gorgeous name. Absolutely no issues and I truly wouldn’t ever think to shorten it at all. Cordelia is harsher in my opinion and I bet people would nickname her Cordie, yuck. :) Just say no nicknames thanks to everyone before she’s born and you will be stuck with a lovely name. 💗

Lobsterquadrille2 · 07/03/2021 21:11

My cat is Cordelia and I think it's a great name. Cornelia is ok, just sounds a bit harder and reminiscent of Cornelius, Babar's advisor. I'd forgotten Ecce Romani though - yes, she was the puella parva I think.

Lockdowndramaqueen · 07/03/2021 21:14

Love it, both it and Cordelia would make my short list.

YoniAndGuy · 08/03/2021 15:18

There was a recent thread on Octavia, and I commented that I would expect it to be on a lot of people's lists, but rarely end up as the first choice as there are just nicer names in the same bracket - less harsh, or with better short forms.

This is exactly the same kind of name. The kind of list Cornelia would be on would also have Cordelia, Claudia, Celia, Cecilia on it... and one of those would be chosen because they are all nicer, easier names.

Corn is a terrible obvious short form and I don't like the shape the 'Orn' bit makes either on the page or in sound.

Agree Cordelia is lovely, far far better.
