Valentine for a boy

First off, no he wouldn't be born in February, more like July. I just want to see your opinions on the name. Maybe some nicknames you'd use for a little boy called Valentine. We're thinking Tino or Vali so far. Thanks.

By the way, I wasn't specifically saying that people shouldn't use the name Valentine - just that some names will sound more normal or less surprising in some cultures/nationalities than others.

I wouldn't think anything of it if I met an Italian man called Andrea or Nicola, but I'd think it an unusual choice for parents with a 100% British background to call their son by one of these names.

bother not both, sorry!

Pugdoglife · 03/03/2021 14:00

I prefer Valentin or Valentino but valentine is lovely too.

Ismellphantoms · 03/03/2021 14:23

@IamnotwhouthinkIam It's an English name used for hundreds of years. It's not foreign or exotic. My DH's family are William, Stephen, Charles and Valentine through many generations.

I'm aware of that, but the fact is it's very uncommon now (only 22 boys named it last year in the UK) - so it will sound exotic to many people because Valentine variations (Valentin or Valentino) are much more commonly used in other countries.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/03/2021 18:40

OP, have you considered the Valentin spelling instead? It's top 50 in countries like France, Germany and Austria and slightly more popular than Valentine in the UK too (possibly because that spelling/pronunciation is less obviously linked with' St Valentine).

I think:
•Valerie
•Cheap teddy bears, chocolates and cards, obligation to share "love", rejection, single people, rose petals on a bed photographed and shared on social media by "influencers"

giantbottom · 03/03/2021 19:52

And Calvin Klein

Twelve8Ts · 03/03/2021 20:27

Love it. My nephews middle name and my daughters middle name.

SmileyClare · 03/03/2021 20:28

Dawn O'Porter has a Valentine

Lots of people will hear his name and think it's Valentino Porter which is a bit confusing.

I agree with others, it's unusual and the sort of name celebrities use. I think it sounds rather flamboyant for your average British bloke and perhaps it bit tiresome to field questions about your name your whole life "were you born on Valentine's day?" would probably get a bit tiresome.

I quite like it! I would go with Len or Lenny as the nickname. Val is a bit feminine-sounding to me for a little boy, just my opinion.

RedToothBrush · 03/03/2021 21:38

I love Valentine as a name.

Violetlavenders · 04/03/2021 08:58

Valentine is a great name.

inmyslippers · 04/03/2021 09:03

I love it, wouldn't be brave enough myself though

RuthW · 04/03/2021 12:20

Not to my taste.

Wondermule · 04/03/2021 19:17

Think it’s the hormones talking OP, it’s very wet sounding! How about Victor?

Misbeehived · 04/03/2021 19:19

Love it!

gottakeeponmovin · 04/03/2021 19:20

Lovely

Misbeehived · 04/03/2021 19:22

I’d be one of those people I’ve never encountered in real life who insists on no nicknames!

Firebird83 · 04/03/2021 19:47

Lenny could work as a nickname

CoffeeRunner · 04/03/2021 19:51

I know of a little Valentine. Born last November so possibly a Valentines’ Day conception Grin.

I’m not keen TBH. Although I’d never heard the nn Tino before & I do think that’s quite nice.

VenusClapTrap · 05/03/2021 13:58

I love it, BUT I was at school with a girl whose surname was Valentine, and February was a nightmare for her every single year. I’m not sure I could put a child through that.

2Sangrias · 05/03/2021 16:09

I know a 40-something Valentine (rhyming with wine) who is Val.

I also know a teenage Valentine pronounced Valen-teen. I prefer this pronunciation. Nickname Vinnie.

justanotherneighinparadise · 05/03/2021 16:12

I’d want a nickname that wasn’t Val. That would be the thing that probably put me off. DC2 has a four syllable name that I knew would get shortened by others, and it has. So I had to make sure I liked the shortened version too when I picked the name.

Mimilamore · 05/03/2021 16:16

Love it 😍
