Wild card - Emerald

I've posted what feels like 100 times so far about our baby name for DD due in 2 weeks.

Middle name will be Jean - that's pretty much a certainty.

We had almost decided on the first name Darcy - surname begins with a D and I like the alliteration.

But, we have a bit of a wild card alternative for the first name - Emerald, nn Emmy.

Can I have honest thoughts? Is it too "out there"?

So -

Darcy Jean

Or

Emerald Jean?
@HeatherShimmerIsMyShade Interesting! Do you have any issues with it?
None at all. Had a few raised eyebrows when we chose it, and yes, I do have to spell it occasionally for people, but largely she just get compliments on what a pretty name she has.

BigTastyMmmmmm · 04/03/2021 13:09

I really don't like Darcy, I think it's become a bit "downmarket" maybe?

Emerald is alright, better than Darcy and infinitely better WITHOUT the alliteration.

@jemimafuddleduck I wasn't on your previous thread but my vote is definitely with Aeryn - lovely name!

Exhausted4ever · 04/03/2021 13:43

Much prefer it to darcy

curiouscatgotkilled · 04/03/2021 13:45

I LOVE Emerald. its beautiful and unusual but easy to say and spell. And you can shorten it to Emmy which is nice.

not keen on Darcy at all.

CattyCactus · 04/03/2021 13:49

Emerald is gorgeous. Go for it.

notalwaysalondoner · 04/03/2021 14:48

I know an Emerald. She rocks that name. I think it helps if you are pretty and quirky but who knows, maybe the name helped make her that way...

WatermelonKisses · 04/03/2021 16:07

Love it! I love Sapphire too but everyone always says it's a stripper name, wonder why Emerald doesn't get the same response.

ParisJeTAime · 04/03/2021 16:15

I like Sapphire too. It's no more strippery than Ruby surely?

But Emerald has something very classy about it imo.

If you google 'Sapphire stripper', you get quite a lot of hits, including what seems to be a Las Vegas strip club called Sapphire, whereas the only hit you get for 'Emerald stripper' is a Nameberry thread on whether Emerald is a 'stripper name' (38% said yes, 54% said no). 'Ruby stripper' gets a demented-sounding burlesque take on the Wizard of Oz called Ruby Strippers (!), but the top hit is actually for a brand of environmentally-friendly paint remover. Grin

@VegetarianDeathCult thanks for the research 🤣

🤭🤣 Ruby Strippers! Omfg

M0rT · 04/03/2021 16:40

I like them both but Emerald a little bit more.
Also has a built in "blend in" nickname like Em if she turns out to be reserved.
I wouldn't worry to much about the flow with middle names, the only middle names I know are my siblings and a friend whose middle name is her grandmother's name. That's just because I know her grandmother!
Maybe if you were calling her Ella or Grace they might use a middle name in school as a differentiator. But with Emerald or Darcy that is very unlikely.

My mind is a bit blown by a burlesque Wizard of Oz. Though I think it was a charity run for a good cause, but still. The 'Burlesque Dorothy' costume was mildly disturbing...

greendress789 · 04/03/2021 18:50

Love it with the nickname Emi.
