Wild card - Emerald

I've posted what feels like 100 times so far about our baby name for DD due in 2 weeks.

Middle name will be Jean - that's pretty much a certainty.

We had almost decided on the first name Darcy - surname begins with a D and I like the alliteration.

But, we have a bit of a wild card alternative for the first name - Emerald, nn Emmy.

Can I have honest thoughts? Is it too "out there"?

So -

Darcy Jean

Or

Emerald Jean?

Emerald Jean is lovely, OP.

Neverspeakofthisagain · 03/03/2021 21:33

Literally fuming that I didn't think of Emerald for DD Grin

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 03/03/2021 21:34

Emerald charming-
Emerald Fennell clinches it for me, brilliant!!
Cant believe no one has mentioned her
Also sweet nicknames.

MintyCedric · 03/03/2021 21:38

I love Emerald Jean and I happen to know a fabulous Emmy.

Definitely prefer it to Darcy.

jemimafuddleduck · 03/03/2021 22:05

Thanks so much all! It's moved up to the first place choice I think...! 💚

Ha! I did! Grin She’s amazing!
GrapeHyacinth · 04/03/2021 09:39

I really like it. The actress Emerald Fennel has probably already been mentioned.

GrapeHyacinth · 04/03/2021 09:40

Oops. Replied without looking at the other replies but assumed she would have been mentioned

IdblowJonSnow · 04/03/2021 09:43

I love Emerald. Gorgeous.
Not keen on darcy.

However I will say that when I discuss outlandish names that we didnt go for with my kids, they are hugely relieved!

Emerald is definitely a name that needs to be lived up to! If your dd is a shrinking violet she may not appreciate it!

Neverspeakofthisagain · 04/03/2021 09:59

I'd be quite tempted to give her one of these middle names

Madison — Wisconsin.
Elizabeth — New Jersey.
Savannah — Georgia.
Charlotte — North Carolina.
Alexandria — Virginia.
Aurora — Illinois.
Phoenix — Arizona.
Logan — Utah.

So that she would be Emerald City Grin because Wizard of Oz is the best film ever.

Ijustlikedthename · 04/03/2021 11:32

LOVE Emerald!

viques · 04/03/2021 11:39

@VegetarianDeathCult

Emerald is a bit 1920s showgirl, but I like it far more than Darcy.
I thought Emerald Cunard. Who wasn’t a showgirl!

And who apparently started life as Maude Alice Burke......... Grin

whenwillthemadnessend · 04/03/2021 11:47

I knew an emerald at work. She was Australian and when she started literally EVER person she met commented on her name I liked it tho.

As long as your dd is ok with a lifetime of of
'Ooooh how unusual etc etc etc'

VegetarianDeathCult · 04/03/2021 11:58

I know more about Nancy Cunard, so I experience Emerald C primarily as mildly disastrous mother-figure -- but I think she only started calling herself Emerald after her husband died, when she was about fifty...? (When she was fondly expecting to be Queen Wallis' Mistress of the Robes, apparently, and was completely devastated when he abdicated... Grin)

MondeoFan · 04/03/2021 11:59

Yes to Emerald
No to Darcy

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 04/03/2021 12:01

Emerald Jean is a fantastic name OP!
I'm not a fan of Darcy, reminds me of Mr Darcy.

jemimafuddleduck · 04/03/2021 12:06

Thanks for all the positive opinions so far...

I don't want to lumber her with a name that will be a burden, but at the same time I think it's gorgeous, and unusual without being "made up" - as many "unusual" names are simply made up.

OP posts:
DOUGHNUTSNOW · 04/03/2021 12:18

Such a stunning gorgeous name and emeralds are heavenly.
With that said it's...I can't think of the word but if she doesn't live up to the name it could possibly be a bit OTT? Sometimes a big name can shrink a person or seem cheap. If Beyonce wasn't a worldwide performer and legend the name would be too much.

DOUGHNUTSNOW · 04/03/2021 12:19

It's a big name to live up to.

SnoozyBoozy · 04/03/2021 12:19

Really surprised at all the dislike for Darcy! I have no strong opinions on it either way personally, just didn't realise it was even that popular. Darcy just makes me think of Dame Darcey Bussell, so if anything I think of it as a little posh!

I like Emerald though, but actually prefer Emmy.

jemimafuddleduck · 04/03/2021 12:20

@SnoozyBoozy yes I'm surprised at the dislike for Darcy too! I still really like it and it's still a contender for us.

Emerald might just pip it to the post though...

Angel2702 · 04/03/2021 12:29

Yes not one I would have ever considered but actually I really like it.

VenusClapTrap · 04/03/2021 12:35

I love Emerald. I also like Sapphire and Amethyst

HeatherShimmerIsMyShade · 04/03/2021 12:38
@partyatthepalace Yes I was the Aeryn Jean lady! But that thread put me off the name because so many people were slagging it off / arguing about the pronunciation 🤣
Aeryn is a beautiful name. Which is why it's also my DD's name

jemimafuddleduck · 04/03/2021 12:41

@HeatherShimmerIsMyShade Interesting! Do you have any issues with it?
