.......

It feels quite 80s but maybe time to bring it back?

It does feel a bit dated to me...but Amanda Gorman, the young poet laureate in the US, is a pretty great namesake!

BunnyRuddington · 27/02/2021 10:22

I've really never liked it so for me it's too soon Smile

squashyhat · 27/02/2021 10:24

Two of my closest friends are 60s Amandas so it goes back a bit further than the 80s!

I work with 2 from the 60's both known as Mandy. I've always thought of it as a 60's name. I suppose it will come back at the same time as Donna, Dawn, Clare etc

fantasmasgoria1 · 27/02/2021 10:31

I don't like it. My opinion only but it's a rough sounding name. The girls at school called Amanda and most adults I have known with the name have been bullies and really rough. So maybe that clouds my opinion!

Calibrachoa · 27/02/2021 10:31

I like it. I watched a French film set in Provence in 1914 the other day with an Amanda character. Funnily enough with the Provence accent it sounded similar to how an English person would pronounce it rather than how it's pronounced elsewhere in France as A -mond- ah

NoSquirrels · 27/02/2021 10:36

I know a couple of Anandas (with an n), which is lovely - it means ‘joy’ in Sanskrit. Amanda doesn’t do it for me - you’ve only got Manda/Mands/Mandy as shortenings and I hate them.

partyatthepalace · 27/02/2021 11:26

It’s a nice name - long as you can avoid the awful Mandy.

I think it was pretty popular from the 40s through to 70s /80s. And I think you are right - these mid century names are due for a revival. We might find the ones that were more popular earlier - like Patricia, Susan, John etc - get revived first.

Kalllop · 27/02/2021 11:50

John is a good strong name

I like it.

janedoedeerafemaledeer · 27/02/2021 15:56

I know a Mandy (Amanda) and John married couple. Amanda is lovely, intelligent and pretty so I associate the name with her.

DramaAlpaca · 27/02/2021 15:57

Like a previous poster I see it as a 60s name. Growing up there were three Amandas on our small street.

I like Amanda, it has a nice sound, but I thoroughly dislike all of the diminutives.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 27/02/2021 16:02

I love the name Amanda, but REALLY dislike Mandy which seems, sadly, to be the go-to diminutive. Amanda seems so elegant compared to Mandy, which I'm afraid I just imagine being shouted across a car park - says more about me, I know Blush

user1493494961 · 27/02/2021 16:21

I don't think it's ready for a come-back.

ConorMasonsWife · 27/02/2021 17:02

It's my middle name and I'm not keen 😅

ConorMasonsWife · 27/02/2021 17:03

And I'm 28!

HurricaneBitch · 27/02/2021 17:11

I'm 53 and hate it. Probably not the demographic you care about but hey ho, you asked.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/02/2021 17:26

Amanda is okay, but like you said does feel slightly 70's/80's (and Mandy very so, although you could use the cooler nn Andi instead?). John for a boy is lovely however, an underused classic now.

Maybe Miranda instead of Amanda? Was never as popular and being Shakespearean feels more timeless.

Sarcobaleno · 27/02/2021 17:37

Guess it depends on what you associate with. I know a 30-something Mandy who is very cool and I really like it. Amanda I don't like much but not sure why.

Mrstwiddle · 27/02/2021 17:54

Agree with PP, Miranda is much nicer.

KirstenBlest · 27/02/2021 18:59

A bit 1950s/1960s, often nn Mandy.
Amanda is nice but maybe a bit too soon for a comeback.

RoseMartha · 27/02/2021 19:07

I likeit

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 27/02/2021 19:12

Still dated IMO. Went to school in the 00s with a girl with the unfortunate nicknames “Mardy Mandy” and “Minging Mandy” Sad.

ofwarren · 27/02/2021 19:14

I like it!
Not at all keen on Mandy though

Jeanswithanicetop · 27/02/2021 19:17

I like it, really don’t like Mandy though! I’ve known a few Amandas and no Mandys, so the name doesn’t have to be shortened
