Doris Lily

I keep fluctuating between loving this name and then having second thoughts.

I know it has old lady associations but that aside, I like the sound and think it would suit someone of all ages.

I tend to be drawn to names that people arent sure of at first and then they grow on them. Will this be a grower?

Doris is going to be a massive marmite name but I quite like it. Lily has been done to death though. That doesn't mean you can't use it, my dd has Rose as her middle name, which is the same, but I think it means you have to love it, and it has to mean something to you to use it, not just because its a name that fills a gap.

Hahaha88 · 26/02/2021 20:51

I'm not keen sorry

Snufkins · 26/02/2021 20:52

Of all the old lady names - Doris?!

For the child’s sake, no.

Buzzer3555 · 26/02/2021 20:53

I think it is a beautiful name.

Aahotep · 26/02/2021 20:55

I am related by marriage to a Doris and I can't stand her so I'm afraid it's a no from me.

user1493494961 · 26/02/2021 20:55

Doris won't thank you.

GU24Mum · 26/02/2021 21:13

Doris sounds a bit too old ladyish for me but I also think that the two names don't run all that well together, sorry.

If you love Doris, how about Doris Emily, Doris Elizabeth, Doris Olivia?

bourbonne · 26/02/2021 21:22

Do you like Doris without Lily? Because that is what she'll be known as. Most people won't even know her middle name, whatever it is.

Personally, I'd give it a miss. Perhaps it's the unfortunate similarity to "doddering" that makes it feel too far gone.

Dora, though? Or Dorothy with nickname Dolly?

TigerDroveAgain · 26/02/2021 21:23

Doris?!?!?!

No, it’s up there with Thelma. Some names need to stay in the past!

Finallydoingthis · 26/02/2021 21:32

The middle name is a family name and pretty set. Agree that its not massively important as rarely used, so its all about the first name, which is definitely marmite!
I wonder if it's really that different to 'Iris' which is very popular?!

I think it's really dull and can't imagine a teenage girl called Doris. Not one of the old lady names that needs to make a comeback

Dayafterday · 26/02/2021 21:37

No really bad.

Serin · 26/02/2021 21:38

It's a popular for name for Bulldogs where Iive, but so was Toby a few years back and I know quite a few primary aged Tobys now.

FluffMagnet · 26/02/2021 21:39

My 90 odd year old grandmother is Doris, nn Dot. She has always hated her name.

CheshireCats · 26/02/2021 21:41

It's a definite no from me - it's an ugly name.

RuthW · 26/02/2021 21:43

Lovely

ParisJeTAime · 26/02/2021 21:51

I don't like Doris, sorry. It also rhymes with Boris, which puts me off even more.

How about Dorothy or Mavis?

TheVanguardSix · 26/02/2021 21:51

Doris the Finkasaurus (sorry! Beastie Boys reference there!).
I love it. I love names like Doris, Sybil, Maude...

Piggyhoolier · 26/02/2021 21:53

My midwife when DD was born was called Doris. I think it’s quite nice, remember thinking it was unusual in someone under 80 and it’s probably due a revival.

GADDay · 26/02/2021 21:56

I hated it when I clicked on the the thread but it has rapidly grown on me. I now actually LOVE the name Doris.

You could have a few nicknames - Didi, Dora, Dot/ty.

becca3210 · 26/02/2021 21:58

A big no sorry prefer Iris, Betty, Dorothy etc. If you like the old lady vibe

Branleuse · 26/02/2021 22:04

I love the name Doris

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/02/2021 22:10

It's not my taste, sorry - I just don't like the sound of it.

Iris is popular because it is part of 3 associations/trends which means it was always likely to rise into the top 100 - Retro/vintage (Ada, Nancy etc), Floral (Rose, Lily etc) and Mythological (Freya, Thea etc).

Doris unfortunately only has the retro/vintage or "old lady" so is never going to be that popular - as it also doesn't have the trendy "y/ie" ending or the popular sounds that other newly revived vintage names do (Ivy, Elsie etc). If you think about it, Mavis is similar to Doris but hasn't really comeback yet (despite the relative popularity of similar sounding Mabel, Maeve and even May as a middle).

If you are looking for a retro/vintage name that is on it's way up but not there yet, I think Audrey and to a lesser extent Sylvia or Freda could make a comeback due to their popular sounds.

YourWurstNightmare · 26/02/2021 22:14

Doe or Dory would be cute nicknames.

Tana433 · 26/02/2021 22:22

I had 2 great aunts called Doris and Lilly and their sister (my grandma) was called May. I love old- fashioned names personally.
