Has anyone ruined a name for you?

I used to love the name Fleur and would have actually used it. Then my sister casually said it was like Cilla Black saying 'flare', and now I have such a strong association that I couldn't possibly use it. Has this happened to anyone else?

This same question was asked on here very recently if you go back a few pages I'm sure you'll be able to find it. We can all find fault with basically any name, some more so than others sure but they're usually obvious as with Fanny, Lolita etc.

I might know an awful [insert name] and someone else will have a sweet brilliant kiddo called [insert name] so it doesn't seem to help much. There are names that are perfectly acceptable that I'll never consider using because of personal experience but that's personal.

You can also Google: Famous people called [Insert Name] to search names you're intersted in and you'll also likely get a Wikipedia page with well known people past and present and fictional characters.

Behindthename.com gives an insight into public opinion, pronunciation and origin.

As for names that are ruined for me they are Bleep, Bleep and Bleep.

partyatthepalace · 24/02/2021 19:17

She didn’t really ruin it for you, she just pointed out an association. If you thought she was talking nonsense you’d have ignored her.

Polkadot123 · 24/02/2021 19:59

As a teacher... many names have been spoilt for me 😂 I love Fleur though- go with it anyways xx

BallsToYouSue · 24/02/2021 20:30

We had a slightly different thread before, recently, which was to do with knowing horrible people with names you previously liked.

Yes, I have had this sort of thing op!

My brother said Bryony sounded like someone was describing someone as Brian-esque. Like, "she's a bit Brian-y". Now I can't unhear it and I love the name! Wouldn't use it now.

Fleur does sound awful in most British accents (sorry). Actually in most non-French accents, it doesn't sound great.

ohfuschia · 24/02/2021 20:34

I liked Iris until my husband pointed out that in the accent where we live it sounds like ‘arse’.

Treehops · 24/02/2021 21:23

Lowell. Realised I can't seem to say it properly, it rolls around my mouth. And a friend heard me say I liked it and started to refer to unborn son as the name when I hadn't decided I wanted it yet, that sealed it I think.

NoJetter · 26/02/2021 22:55

Arthur. Where I live now people seem to pronounce it ‘Awfah’

danascully96 · 27/02/2021 03:21

True crime. I literally looked up a random name the other day and this horrific crime came up, literally making me sick to my stomach. So, stories like that distort my appreciation.

danascully96 · 27/02/2021 03:22

Well, not literally. But it did make me feel nauseous!

pinkpinecone · 27/02/2021 11:25

Astrid (Ass turd)
Ophelia (pead)

Two lovely names absolutely ruined when someone highlighted these issues!

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 27/02/2021 11:37

Sophia was one of my favourite names for about 25 years until I had to work with one just two years ago who made me feel really uncomfortable and did some morally questionable things. I’m trying to un-associate the name from her but it’s hard.

I loved the name Nathaniel until a colleague used it.

I liked Luke and Lucas but came across a creepy Fr Luke (priest) who made me want a lot of distance from that name.

I really like Jemima but everyone says Puddleduck when I mention it.

Ones that I’ve probably put people off are Amelia and Melina as I tell them about the medical conditions (missing a limb, blood in poo). I can’t unassociate from the horrible meanings and always wonder what the parents were thinking. Amelia is such a popular name too!

Ophelia reminds me of “I feel ya”. Also I associate her with madness and suicide due to Hamlet.

janedoedeerafemaledeer · 27/02/2021 16:11

There are some names I associate with either horrible people or people who have had horrible things done to them. There's a girl's name atm that is getting mentioned on here a lot and it's the name of a poor girl who was very brutally murdered in America. There's there's Adolf, Stalin etc but being English I wouldn't use either anyway.

EssentialHummus · 27/02/2021 16:15

Oliver, Lucy - off-the-scale badly behaved kids I know.

Leo - someone’s asshole ex-husband.

I also (living in London) have the Ar-fa problem PP mentioned.

BackforGood · 27/02/2021 16:20

Sames as Polkadot123 , there were various names that dh suggested when we were naming ours, that I just couldn't use because of various dc I associated them with - hazard of the job Grin

riotlady · 28/02/2021 13:59

DH and I both love Astrid but not sure about the whole Ass-turd thing from the office.

Bryony being a bit Brian-y has actually really cracked me up xD

VanillaAndOrange · 28/02/2021 14:01

Amelia and Melina as I tell them about the medical conditions (missing a limb, blood in poo)

Technically you could also say Alexia means "inability to read" - except it doesn't, because the etymology is different.

neonjumper · 28/02/2021 14:10

I loved the name Harry but every time I hear it now I associate it with the way my friend from Poland says it , 'Hairy' 😂

Polkadot123 · 28/02/2021 15:52

I love Etta Rose for my first due in two weeks time... but I’ve realised it literally sounds like ate-a-rose 😫😫😫🙈 so having to go back to the drawing board x

Edenember · 01/03/2021 10:54

@Polkadot123 Shame as lovely combo, what about a third name between the two?

BalancedIndividual · 01/03/2021 11:28

No, I was tempted to point out to my friends that calling their son 'Kush' (full name actually kushal), didnt sound right. But I didnt want to be a d*, so didnt say anything.

toastofthetown · 01/03/2021 16:29

I said I liked the name Hebe, and my sister laughed and said ‘heebie jeebies’.

Whatsyourflava · 01/03/2021 17:29

@Polkadot123 how about Greta Rose with nickname Etta

Sandgrown1970 · 01/03/2021 17:32

Or Etta/Greta Rosalie/Rosalind/Rosaline/Rosemary/Rosa/Roseanne etc?

SirSamuelVimes · 01/03/2021 17:35

Used to be a teacher. So many ruined names! My two dds have 1. A name of a lovely girl I taught for Alevel English language and 2. An unusual name that I have never come across ever.

Big plus point to stopping teaching - no-one new can come along and ruin any more names!

VegetarianDeathCult · 02/03/2021 23:34

@pinkpinecone

Astrid (Ass turd) Ophelia (pead)

Two lovely names absolutely ruined when someone highlighted these issues!

I don’t get the issue with either of these.

Yes, Astrid contains the sound ‘Ass’, but you’d have to change a bowel and rearrange the consonants to make the second syllable ‘turd’.

And are you saying Ophelia reminds you of paedophilia?
