Girl equivalent of Benedict

Does anyone know a female equivalent to Benedict ?

I vaguely remember Theodora is the English equivalent but I have no idea why - something to do with it meaning God’s blessing?

I was wondering if Beatrice was the same but I don’t like it very much 🙈

Benedicta

Or if you’re feeling Shakespearean, Beatrice 😆

Blueeyedgirl21 · 24/02/2021 13:13

Is Benedicta actually a name or is it just with an a on the end ..?? Grin sorry if that sounds ignorant

I have just remembered Bernadette is a name but it’s the name of quite a few of my Irish rellies so I am not so keen, they would be a weird choice to name after

Elizabeth means Oath of God/ Gift of God... don’t know if that’s similar enough for you?

Blueeyedgirl21 · 24/02/2021 13:18

@JemimaTiggywinkle that’s my middle name and I had no idea what it meant ! Thank you!

Benedicta is definitely a name although as names go I think it's fairly rare. Another version is Benita, with the same meaning (blessed).

halfhope · 24/02/2021 13:24

I had a French friend (female) called Benedicte.

halfhope · 24/02/2021 13:27

I did some searching online and one site suggest Euphemie

FingonTheValiant · 24/02/2021 13:29

In France Bénédicte is a girls name. Boys are Benoît.

Bettafish · 24/02/2021 13:30

Benedicte and Benoite in France I think

lobsteroll · 24/02/2021 13:32

Benedita?

rubabayaga · 24/02/2021 14:16

Sinead and Gwynn also mean blessed

itssquidstella · 24/02/2021 14:17

Benedetta is the Italian.

itssquidstella · 24/02/2021 14:17

Beate/Beata also nice (pronounced Bay-AH-ta).

GameofPhones · 24/02/2021 14:21

Benedetta nn Detta (though unfortunately sounds the same as 'debtor').

partyatthepalace · 24/02/2021 15:50

Benedicta is the English language feminine of Benedict.

Used by Roman Catholic families but not much outside that. I like it personally...

Pogostemon · 24/02/2021 15:51

Benita
Beatrix
Helga
Dorothy

whatausername · 24/02/2021 15:55

Benedicte or Benedicta

whatausername · 24/02/2021 15:57

Btw there is an amazing little girl called Benedicte who survived ebola at six days old!

goteam · 24/02/2021 15:58

There is a Benedikte at my kids' school. Benny for short which I like for a girl's nn.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 24/02/2021 16:53

Benny is really cool. I was actually thinking of that as the nickname. We were looking at Teddie and Theodora as the namesake is Benedict (long story) but Benny (Bennie? Beni?! ) is so cool. I’m just not sure if Benedicta is the one for me though . Benedetta is quite nice but we are really not Italian in any way although there is the catholic link, think it might be weird although I suppose tons of people have names from countries they aren’t from.

The meanings of Benedict and Theodora are not the same, not that it matters, just in case you are interested...

Benedict, Latin roots meaning bene (well or good) dict (speak or spoken)

Theodora, Greek roots theo (God) and dora (gift).

dotdotdotdash · 24/02/2021 17:04

Bettina is used in Italy and Germany
