Arve for a boy

DP are at odds with naming our first DC. I really like Thomas, Samuel and Arthur, and while DP says he likes all three, he's pushing for something unusual. So far suggestions have included Gunnar, Hem, Pep, Dash, Tasman, and Arve. I'm not sure some of these are even names! The only one I'm vaguely considering is Arve (though this could be pregnancy hormones). Would really appreciate your reactions to Arve.

I much prefer your choice of names.

Is your DP Scandinavian?

When I saw 'Arve' I wondered if it were short for Harvey. It's better than Hem, Pep or Dash! Not too keen though.

I've heard of Gunnar and Tasman, but not the rest of his choices.

SeagullSong · 24/02/2021 03:11

I like it but think you'll have a hard time getting it pronounced correctly. Do you/DH have Scandinavian heritage?

DoodleLovin · 24/02/2021 03:15

My go-to pronunciation is RV like recreational vehicle. So no, not a fan if I’m honest. Not a fan of the other suggestions from your hubby either.

BlackCatShadow · 24/02/2021 04:04

I also think it sounds like a nickname for Harvey.

There are some really great Scandi boy names out there if you Google. I’m not keen on the names your husband picked.

Perching · 24/02/2021 04:15

Your husbands’ suggestions sounds like names for a daschund. Remind him this poor child needs to live in the real world!
Love Thomas and Arthur, Samuel (Sam) is a bit wet.

Ritascornershop · 24/02/2021 04:29

Pep or Dash? Jesus. No. Hem to an English ear would sound like a a pause for thought. Tasman reminds me of Tasmania. Don’t like Gunnar as it sounds like gun, but at least it’s a name. Arve sounds like a Londoner saying Harve. Your husband can maybe have a vote on a middle name, he’s not ready to be allowed near first names.

Bmidreams · 24/02/2021 04:31

Definitely dogs names.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 24/02/2021 06:25

Your husbands names are weird. Are they all actual names? I've never heard of any except Gunnar because that's the name of Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag's son, I think, and I remember thinking it was a horrible thing to name your child. Reminds me of a little killer (no idea if it's from another country and has another meaning but sounds odd to me).

Hem, Pep, Dash... What??!! Dash is of one of the Kardashian kid's middle names, actually. So I have heard of that. (Why do I know so much about Z list celebs and their offspring, I hear you cry? No idea. I am taking a long, hard look at myself right now 😂)

Tasman sounds like a made-up girl's name, and Arve sounds like someone saying Harvey in my local accent. I can just imagine it screamed across my local park 'CUMMERE 'ARVEY!!!'

How about Shem - sounds like Hem but biblical so at least seems less made up and random. Or for other unusual boy names, how about:

Otto
Magnus
Digby
Kolbe
Phineas
Cassian
Cassius
Otis

Agree with a PP - you choose first name, your husband can choose middle! (And maybe have a couple of middle names so his is sort of nestled away and hidden a bit!)

ILoveStickers · 24/02/2021 06:37

All three of yours are great. I'd go for Sam.

Your DH's do sound kind of Scandi, maybe because of Gunnar? But Dash is the kid in the Incredibles 😄

More unusual/Scandi?

Magnus
Augustus (Gus)
Soren
Taran
Torben
Andor
Ingo

EdgeOfACoin · 24/02/2021 06:43

Is Arve a name? Where is it from? I don't love your husband's choices.

Can you name your child Arthur and call him Art? That sounds like it might fit with your husband's naming style.

rrra · 24/02/2021 06:47

I used to work with an Arve in Norway. I may be coloured by the fact he was v irritating and hard to work with!

mummabubs · 24/02/2021 07:03

We gave our DS a scandanavian name (similar to Torben) despite having no links ourselves, all our other names we came up with were very "typical" English names! But we both agreed on the unusual name, and I think that's your issue here. I think name your child whatever you like, but maybe generate more names to see if one excites you both?

mummabubs · 24/02/2021 07:04

*Scandinavian!

CRbear · 24/02/2021 07:08

Closest English version of the Norwegian pronunciation of Arve I think you could get would be “Arr-veh” . I like the name.

CupboardOfJoy · 24/02/2021 07:29

Dashiel/ Dashiell, nn Dash

rainbowstardrops · 24/02/2021 09:31

This made me chuckle!
I like more unusual names but I don't like any of your husband's choices. Sorry!

LauraOfWotsits · 24/02/2021 10:35

Sounds like a Londoner calling out to his son Harvey, sorry OP. Thomas and Samuel are lovely names. How about Nathaniel, Antony, Edmund, Daniel, Zachary?

Ninkanink · 24/02/2021 10:37

I think he’s trying to tell you that he thinks you’re having a puppy. 🙄🙄

Saywhatyoumeanandmeanwhatyousa · 24/02/2021 10:38

Your DP’s suggestions sound like perfectly good names for Santa’s reindeer.

MysteriousMonkey · 24/02/2021 10:39

Maria

LauraOfWotsits · 24/02/2021 10:43

On second thoughts my vote goes to:
Tasman Ian Surname

MySocalledLoaf · 24/02/2021 10:51

Joseph nn Pep (Pep is the standard shortening for Joseph in some languages. Your husband might like Sepp, also short for Joseph.)
Christopher nn Topher, Kit or Risto
Dashiell as pp sugests
Dave — really unusual for a baby these days
Arno/Arnau

emmathedilemma · 24/02/2021 12:03

@MysteriousMonkey beat me to it! Can't get the tune out of my head now.

Bubbles1st · 24/02/2021 12:07

To me Arve sounds like someone who can't be bothered to pronounce Harvey correctly and I imagine many a people in their life time would think the same.

Sexnotgender · 24/02/2021 12:10

Are you Arveing a laugh?

Is your husband Scandinavian?
