WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON SAMANTHA? IT DATES BACK TO I BELIEVE 1663 OR SOMETHING IN ENGLAND AND HAS A NICE MEANING. CAN'T TURN OFF CAPS.

OP posts:

Personally not keen as it sounds dated. But what's the meaning?

Mamette · 16/02/2021 15:48

I don’t like it.

Savannah?

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 16/02/2021 15:49

I'm a Samantha. I don't like it, but I am a Sam and if I'm called Samantha I'm in trouble 🤣

Don't hear it very often anymore though (well not where I am)

MaidEdithofAragon · 16/02/2021 15:51

Beautiful if pronounced fully. Round here you get 'Sman-faarr' which isn't great.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/02/2021 15:53

It would be interesting to hear it used on a baby today - all the Samantha's I know are aged between 30's to 60's. You'd also have to bear in mind the recent popularity of Samuel - most "Sam's" will be boys. But if you like the unisex appeal - I say go for it, Samantha's not a bad name.

AlwaysLatte · 16/02/2021 15:54

I LOVE IT Smile

AlwaysLatte · 16/02/2021 15:55

Not so keen on 'Sam' though. That one will be unavoidable, so something to think about if you don't like the shortened version.

SniffingOne · 16/02/2021 16:05

I know a 5 year old Samantha and I find I actually really like it. Makes a change from all the Evie/Ava/Isla variants.

SquirtleSquad · 16/02/2021 16:06

Olaf loves it so it's okay by me.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/02/2021 16:08

Lovely name - very underused now. Sammy is a cute nn, too

Floralnomad · 16/02/2021 16:09

I really dislike it , my eldest sister wanted me to be called it and I’m very pleased that she was vetoed by my parents .

MysteriousMonkey · 16/02/2021 16:13

Also a Samantha and even my own brother pronounces it Suh man fah. Argh. Probably why I've always been Sam - to the point where it feels weird if called Samantha 😂
I do think it looks pretty written down though.

BallsToYouSue · 16/02/2021 16:23

I quite like it.

BeyondMyWits · 16/02/2021 16:25

I think it is a pretty name.

AnotherGuest · 16/02/2021 16:27

It was popular when I was a kid (now in my 40s). It’s pretty retro, but I like it a lot. Also like Sam as a nn. I think it could be ready for a comeback!

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 16/02/2021 16:32

@MysteriousMonkey I prefer Sam too. Hate Sammy. Makes me think of long nails and patent handbags, but that might be because one of the girls at school was a Sammy and exactly like that. Grin

AddictedtoCrunchies · 16/02/2021 16:34

I'm a Samantha. Always preferred Sam but the older I get, the more I introduce myself as Samantha. It'll do for me..

BeanieB2020 · 16/02/2021 16:47

I don't like it. It sounds horrible in many British accents. The sound of the "tha" being pronounced "fa" is really grating.

Emmylou292 · 16/02/2021 16:53

I would like to see it make a comeback, along with Catherine and Caroline.

Bananalanacake · 16/02/2021 16:53

I have a German one, she pronounces it SamanTar, Germans don't do the 'th' in names.

BallsToYouSue · 16/02/2021 16:55

I love it ina French accent too, which I think is similar to how the German sounds.

It's Sa-mon-TA in French I think, which I love.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 16/02/2021 17:01

I really like it , but not Sam or Sammy , always use Samantha & others will .

Timpeall · 16/02/2021 17:12

I LOVE IT.

I've always liked this name. Also like names in a similar vein such as Natasha and Stephanie.

CharlieBoo · 16/02/2021 17:46

Really like it

shivermetimbers77 · 16/02/2021 17:50

I think it’s lovely and all those names which were popular in the 80s are due a comeback ., l expect many more Sarah’s, Lucy’s, Natalies and Samanthas in the next decade.
