Hi MN!
I am on maternity leave, expecting DC1 in a few weeks and I’ve grown really interested in names for the past months.
I find it fascinating and I just bought this great book “The Baby Name Wizard” that Swistle and other name bloggers use.
If anyone is interested, I can copy/paste in this thread what the book says about the name(s) of your choice for your DC or give you ideas of names that are in the same style, still according to the book.
Flowers it’s just an idea as I have time on my hands and love speaking about names, hopefully you can find it useful or find some inspiration!

Just post a name here and ask me to search for the entry or ask “if I like this name for a girl/boy” what other name would I like.

Thanks @Namingtrends so fun to read that! Are there any similar names to Ella in the 'liquid' category? I have realised that's the sound I like, soft and flowy👌🏻

Namingtrends · 09/02/2021 15:42

@Ginevere
Henry
Timeless, Vintage Charm
Brother names are Charles, Oliver, William, Theodore, Joseph, George.
Isabelle
Elegant Antiques, French, Timeless
Sister names: Madeleine, Sophie, Lilian, Charlotte
Both fairly popular, with Henry enjoying a resurgence in 2019, now occupying the 12th rank in boys names in England and Wales, while Isabelle (spelt this way) was at its peak in 2011 (17th) and dropped slightly in popularity, still to enjoy 28th rank in 2019.

@Nellephant Cora! Downton Abbey! One of my personal favourites. And I'm not the only one, see that upwards trend in the graph, in the space of 4 years, Cora went from 238th rank to 158th in 2019.
Style: 'Vintage Charm', 'Short & Sweet'. Cora was one of the trendiest hits of 1870s-80s and today, the trim shape and strong 'o' (thing Margot) is ready to seduce a new generation.

@Tiktok1, Ralph is in the category 'Solid Citizens'.
Solid Citizens is a very special category in that it depicts names that are not completely 'there' yet, but very likely to enjoy a resurgence and immune to any 'trend effect' that would see them dated in 5-10 years. Personally I quite like Ralph, which is bound to the Simpsons but also to the actor Ralph Fiennes.
Charles is more popular, and has a feel that's different to Charlie used as a first name rather than a nickname. The book describes Charles as 'stately and dignified', interestingly it shares the same category as Ralph in the 'Solid Citizens' but also is in the 'Timeless' category.
Today, Charlie is a high-flying success and pertains to the 'Nicknames' and 'Vintage Charm' category.
Which is probably why Charles has decreased in popularity, slowly but surely, while Charlie is now ranked number 9th, way more popular than Charles. This is assuming Charlie is a boy's name, btw.
Quite surprised by how popular Ralph is in England and Wales, which contradicts a bit the category the author puts him in, currently 81st! Solid name then.

@buntingandstarcharts there's loads! Do you have a preference in terms of number of syllables, or start-end sound? So I can send you a shortlist?

Namingtrends · 09/02/2021 16:05

@MsSquiz Charlotte is in the 'Timeless', 'English' and 'French' categories, a dignified classic with a warm and cuddly side: a crowd pleaser.
In the UK, the Royal family boosted the name and similar names in feel and style include Georgia, Eleanor, Amelia, Caroline, Isabelle.

Grace is a bit more vintage and less stately, 'Vintage Charm' and 'Swift and Simple', of the likes of Claire, Sophie, Rose, Hannah, Lily. A 'Nature & Virtue' classic, it's a powerhouse as a middle name to complement more elaborate first names, but as a first name, it is. still one of the most popular ones in England and Wales, at the 8th rank. Charlotte is down from 7th rank to 18th, which makes it a bit more likely she won't have a few Charlottes in her classroom :)

Tiktok1 · 09/02/2021 16:30

@namingtrends thank you! That’s really interesting. And yes to the Simpsons and to the actor. Although he’s ‘Rafe’ and that’s a bit too posh for me to be able to pull off 😂

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/02/2021 16:31

Thanks very much for this @Namingtrends ! Could you tell me what the book says about Julia? - I'm trying to think of similar style names.

Namingtrends · 09/02/2021 16:35

@IamnotwhouthinkIam I was thinking Julia for my little girl too :) It's so gorgeous isn't it?
Completely agree with my book 'it sounds both antique and timeless, its warm elegance is fashionable around the world'. Digging into my personal favourites and the book ideas, you might be drawn to Claire, Anna, Celia, Lydia, Juliet and Caroline.
'Timeless', ' Shakespearean', 'Classical' categories.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/02/2021 16:53

@Namingtrends Thank you so much. Julia is actually my own name Blush . But I've always been grateful my parents chose it (because it's so timeless yet not overused) and it's stood me in good stead; so as I'm currently having IVF fingers crossed ,I'm trying to find similar style names for a son or daughter. I like all the girls names you suggested (although obviously Juliet will be too similar Grin)

SonicandTails · 09/02/2021 16:55

Yes please OP! What does it say for Ivo? Thanks! This is probably excellent advertising for the book tbh!

stellaaaaaa · 09/02/2021 17:06

Can you do Matilda please?

Namingtrends · 09/02/2021 17:36

@SonicandTails I absolutely love the name Ivo! Sadly no entry in the book for that name (there's Ivan and Ivor but I think we agree it is very different). Solid popularity ascent in England and Wales as per the chart. One of my friends is named Ivo and always liked his name.

buntingandstarcharts · 09/02/2021 17:38

@Namingtrends oh there's loads, now I'm intrigued! I think I need to buy this book to see them all! I don't think I've ever really thought about how apt the description of 'liquid' is for my preferences on names.

Namingtrends · 09/02/2021 17:39

@stellaaaaaa Matilda is 'Stately Classic', 'Literary and Artistic' and the author states it is a powerful old classic name, to which I would add is a very 'current' one as well, without the austerity of some placed in the same category such as Beatrice or Adelaide.
I would place it amongst Louisa, Amelia and Penelope (hello Bridgeton!)
In France, Mathilde is a huge hit.

Namingtrends · 09/02/2021 17:40

@buntingandstarcharts do, it's a really awesome book. The only issue I have is now there are too many names I love for DD1!
'Liquid' refer to all the names that do not have any harsh sounds (think Layla rather than Ramona, Eloise rather than Deirdre).

buntingandstarcharts · 09/02/2021 17:45

@Namingtrends I love both those suggestions, can you give me a little selection of liquid names? If of course you have time Grin

sylbunny · 09/02/2021 17:47

Can I have the information for Toby and Sylvia please?

Namingtrends · 09/02/2021 18:10
@Namingtrends I love both those suggestions, can you give me a little selection of liquid names? If of course you have time Grin
Happy to :) Eloise is my own suggestion, Lyla is in the book. I can add to that if you like both of these: Lola, Leonie, Nola, Lenora, Eliana, Lara, Yelena, Elina, Oona (due a comeback!) and Irina. Lots of L and A names as you can see.
I love Irina, Eloise and Lorelei if you're not too afraid of the Gilmore Girls association.

buntingandstarcharts · 09/02/2021 18:30

@Namingtrends what name are you going to go for? X

Namingtrends · 09/02/2021 19:18

@buntingandstarcharts Esme, Eliza or Lucy. X :)

buntingandstarcharts · 09/02/2021 19:43

Gorgeous names Daffodil

Dillybear · 09/02/2021 21:19

Ah can I jump on please? This is a lovely thread! I seem to like names with a ‘th’ sound in them - Esther, Gwyneth, Elizabeth, Martha etc. Do these fall into any particular category? If I like Martha, are there any other names I might like?

Harri165 · 10/02/2021 09:07

If I like Safiya for a girl what else would I like? TIA x

CaffiSaliMali · 10/02/2021 10:43

What's the book like for Celtic names - Welsh, Irish, Scottish and Manx?

Assuming it has some - Eira please.
