Scottish girls names!

DH and I would both like a Scottish name for our baby girl, but can't agree on one!

I really like Eilidh but we live in England and also have a not super straightforward (European) surname, so will she be in for a lifetime of spelling out her full name and mispronunciation? Regardless, DH isn't super keen on Eilidh anyway.

What are your favourite Scottish girls names?

Kirsty. I adore the name.

jillfox1 · 08/02/2021 05:39

Hi everyone! New to the forum and the website. So nice to meet you all! What does DH mean?

crabette · 08/02/2021 07:33

Aila is lovely OP.

If you like this, similar options could be Vaila, Ailsa, Isla.

@jillfox1 DH is Dear Husband - loads of abbreviations on here! x

Hi everyone! New to the forum and the website. So nice to meet you all! What does DH mean?
DH = Dear Husband. Most, maybe all, starting with "d" are for dear. I'm not sure if there's a key somewhere but generally, they're talking about people so you can usually work it out.

On the issue of names, how are Aila and Isla pronounced differently? Or is that just the same name but different spelling?

I like Vaila - although I think that's more a modern name but I like the trend of naming after islands.

HotDogHotDiggityDog · 08/02/2021 08:36

Love Aila, we are also in Scotland and have one. @MimiDaisy11 we pronounce it differently to Isla, it's said like Vaila without the V. Also really like Vaila, Ailsa and Mirren. Also like Mara which I believe is Gaelic for sea but then it also means bitter in hebrew which put me off.

bunhead34 · 08/02/2021 09:44

@ellerman I was bullied by a Kirsty in school, so that is a no go!

@HotDogHotDiggityDog I love Mara! DH loves the sea/nautical stuff so maybe I can get that past his rigorous testing!

Ailsa is nice but DH has a cousin named ailsa so it feels like it's not 'ours' and like a PP said it reminds me of home and away!

Isla is lovely too but seems super common now, I think it's up there on the most popular lists.

Sorry to hear that you have that name association with Kirsty, my best friend is a Kirsty so I love it but I totally see why you wouldn’t use it.

I recently heard of a little girl named Blair - I like it!

Cantdoitallperfectly · 08/02/2021 10:11

Yes to Mara! It’s lovely

tatutata · 08/02/2021 10:12

I would work on him to accept Agnes. Unusual but traditional, which I think is best combo.

LemonBreeland · 08/02/2021 10:13

I love Flora and Mirren

Cantdoitallperfectly · 08/02/2021 10:26

Agnes also gets reversed to make Senga

Cissyandflora · 08/02/2021 10:36

Flora
Shona
Fiona
These are not used much it seems but they are lovely I think.

IsThePopeCatholic · 12/02/2021 22:30

I like flora.

mathanxiety · 13/02/2021 00:46

Greer
Blair
Lorna
Marsaili

Elsa - not particularly Scottish but maybe in the ballpark..

Finola - an anglicisation of the Irish name Fionnuala.

Would you consider Eily? It's an abbreviation of Eileen.

mathanxiety · 13/02/2021 00:56

Annella
Annabel
Fenella
Ina

Isawthathaggis · 13/02/2021 01:01

Fiona, Shona and Heather are all very popular if you look at 40 something’s. In my high school I was one of several Fiona’s, Shona’s and Heathers.
The Scottish version of Jane I’ve always felt.

Loads of 40 something Kirsty’s too.

Love Greer, Mhairi , Elspeth, Ishbel.

RAOK · 13/02/2021 01:38

Rona is like corona

Amortentia · 13/02/2021 02:02

I have to say a strong no to Agnes too, it’s an old fashioned name that should be allowed to die. I can appreciate a fondness for it if you have an elderly relative with that name, but it’s such a cringe inducing name. There are much nicer names, as someone with a similar old lady name please don’t lumber a poor child with this.

Amdone123 · 13/02/2021 02:21

Love Blair, Ishbel and Iona.

Morten · 13/02/2021 09:10

Blair is a boy's name!

RaraRachael · 13/02/2021 10:59

Don't like Ishbel as it reminds me of a girl at school with me who used to get called Pishbel.
No to Blair as I'd say it's a boy's name but nowadays they seem to be ingterchangeable.
Agnes should not make a return,,,,,,,,,, and the dreadful Senga which seemed to be a south of Scotland thing as I'd never heard of it up here.
Rhona is a much better spelling and doesn't have corona connutations.

mathanxiety · 14/02/2021 06:45

I went to school with a girl named Blair back in the 70s.

Would you consider Ines or Inez if you don't like Agnes?

SummeHoliday · 14/02/2021 07:10

Blair is very definitely a Scottish boys' name (even if Americans are insisting on using it for girls!!)

I love
Morven
Fiona
Elspeth
Catriona
Islay
Skye
Kirsten

NamechangeTTC · 16/02/2021 14:24

I'm following this for suggestions.

Really liked liusaidh but I've fallen out with a lucy and the pronunciation is similar.

No to Eilidh, already one in the family.

Open to gaelic, Scots (old or modern) but nothing is jumping out.

Know an aila so that's out too.

RobertatheBrusque · 16/02/2021 14:32

Kirsty
Kirsten
Fiona
Mirren
Lorna
Morven
Heather

I would have had a Flora but it didn’t work with our surname unfortunately.
