Scottish girls names!

DH and I would both like a Scottish name for our baby girl, but can't agree on one!

I really like Eilidh but we live in England and also have a not super straightforward (European) surname, so will she be in for a lifetime of spelling out her full name and mispronunciation? Regardless, DH isn't super keen on Eilidh anyway.

What are your favourite Scottish girls names?

I've never heard the name Aila before. I don't love it, I prefer Isla or even Ailsa.

ftmum94 · 07/02/2021 14:28

Ailsa, Isla, Skye, Mirren, Eilish or Rowan?

emmathedilemma · 07/02/2021 17:46

I think Mairi/Marie and the various options for pronunciation are worse than Eilidh!
I've never heard of Aila. I like Alisa but Aila is too many vowels for me.

partyatthepalace · 07/02/2021 19:31

I like it but a bit of a spelling burden I agree..

Ishbel / Isobel
Fenella
Jean (deffo becoming fashionable again)
Marsali
Alexandra - nn Sandie
Catriona
Lorna
Also quite like Kirsten

Changeythenamey · 07/02/2021 19:48

Aila is brilliant!

Sexnotgender · 07/02/2021 19:49

Morag
Elspeth
Morven

florascotia2 · 07/02/2021 19:51

Ailia is not a Scottish name

AgentCooper · 07/02/2021 19:52

Ishbel is gorgeous. Marsaili too. Morna is a nice one too.

AgentCooper · 07/02/2021 19:55

Kirsteen is another one of my favourites. DSis is Catriona and it’s a great name but she does fend off quite a lot of Catree-Ona pronunciations, even in Scotland.

I've never heard Aila before. Eilidh or Ailsa but not Aila. It sounds Italian or South Asian to me.

florascotia2 · 07/02/2021 20:18

Sorry - just because someone has posted a name doesn't make it real.
How does the name relate/link to Scots or to Scottish Gaelic? Both trad and very old names so far shown on this thread. Aila is not one of those.

Aila doesn't fit with normal naming patterns for either. Scots or Scottish Gaelic. Let's see the proper evidence; I'm open to be corrected.

RaraRachael · 07/02/2021 20:20

Aila is becoming very common - personally I don't like it.

Morag is a blast from the past, as is Shona (never hear it nowadays)
Isla is also quite common
I've seen Ailie rather than the usual Eilidh spelling, also Vhari instead of Mhairi
Morven
Fiona
Ailsa

Please don't give her a name with a Gaelic or tricky spelling or she'll have to spend her life telling people how to pronounce it.
I worked in England and we had a pupil called Catriona. Nearly all the staff called her Cat-ree-o-nah with the stress on the o.

bunhead34 · 07/02/2021 20:22

@florascotia2 there are lots of sources if you google it.
There's no need to be so agro!

Never heard of Aila!

What about:
Ailsa
Iona
Isla
Ishbel
Mairi
Mhairi (vah-ree and I know of a few people who do pronounce it that way)
Elspeth
Eilidh/Ailidh/Ailie
Mirren
Morven
Murron
Catriona (catreena)
Sheena

ChonkyChook · 07/02/2021 20:27

Aila Grin

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 07/02/2021 20:28

Fiona, Flora, Lorna, Morna.
No spelling issues with those, surely?

RaraRachael · 07/02/2021 20:30

I've seen an Alba with Aila for the middle name - not a good combination

AgentCooper · 07/02/2021 20:39

I think Alba as a name is a recent thing. Because it’s effectively calling your child Scotland. It’s a very nice name regardless. The only Alba I’ve ever met was Spanish, and it’s long been a name there.

JamMakingWannaBe · 07/02/2021 20:40

Shona
Sheila
Kirsty
Flora
Iona
Bonnie
Jean / Jeanie
Heather

florascotia2 · 07/02/2021 21:41

bunhead am honestly not being aggressive. So many baby names give rubbish info re Scottish baby names.
If you have a genuine, reliable name source for Aila, I'd really love to see No kiddling; honestly. Best wishes.

Cantdoitallperfectly · 07/02/2021 21:57

Kirsty/Kirstie
Caitlin
Flora
Mhari
Iona
Heather
Cora
Edina (meaning = from Edinburgh)
Lesley
Jean

Merename · 07/02/2021 22:04

Sorry, but Agnes is not popular in Scotland. It was used a generation or two back, but is generally perceived negatively IMHO.

You say that with authority, Jackie Grin, but I humbly disagree, I’d love a wee Agnes these days. Senga not yet coming back tho!

I thought Aila was just a bit of a bastardised spelling of Isla?

Merename · 07/02/2021 22:06

What about Nell?

bunhead34 · 07/02/2021 22:07

@florascotia2 sorry, hormones 😂

Seems like it has a few different origins, one being Scottish 🤷🏼‍♀️ I wouldn't know if a source was reliable or not really!
