Names you were too scared to use, names your parents told you they hated, names you made up, names you'd never heard of before and anything else in between

Some of mine...

Girls:
Saffron
Kendra
Olga

Boys:
Wolfie
Sidney
Ronnie

Thor
Marley

I really liked Marley because it was the street my Grandparents lived in and I have very fond memories of the street and house.

BabyBee93 · 04/02/2021 20:42

@stormelf Love both of these! Where did you find them from? They sound enchanting like they're from a fairytale

Calista
Calliope
Love a Greek mythology name

alltheadrenalin · 04/02/2021 20:44

Carey - such a lovely name
Lorenzo - would sound ridiculous in our northern accents
Shilo

Amdone123 · 04/02/2021 20:47

I love Blue.
I remember watching Paul Daniels on TV. He invited a child up on stage and asked his name. When the boy said Blue, he said, 'That's not a name, that's a colour!'
It was years ago, but I remember liking it then and still do.
I chose a very traditional name for my son.

@35andThriving

Girls names, that I like, that have been used less than 30 times, in England and Wales in 2019 (Latest available statistics): -

Patsy
Cherry
Colette
Celestina
Kerry
Shirley
Carolyn
Bryony

I haven't looked as closely at the boys' names yet.

I do like: -

Desmond
Kester
Clive
Judd
Jerome
Ross
Russ

My name is on your list (female) it's the nicest by far :) I've only met one other person with the same name. I wouldn't describe it as 'out there' though
HenriettaHeffalump · 04/02/2021 20:56

I love nature names and strong sounding, old fashioned names, which some people think are ugly:

Girls:

Star
Maple
Agatha
Agnes
Henrietta (obviously Grin)

Boys:

Star
River
Wulfric

PatchworkElmer · 04/02/2021 21:02

Girl:
Tazie
Hermione (I know this isn’t majorly ‘out there’ but DH reacted like it was 😂)

I think I must like more traditional names for boys as I can’t think of any... we did briefly toy with Emerson...

RosesAndHellebores · 04/02/2021 21:02

I know a grown up Gulliver. Fantastic name.
Magnus is good.
Isolde for a girl.

Horatio
Araminta

PatchworkElmer · 04/02/2021 21:04

Oh and I LOVE Bronwen.

cheapskatemum · 04/02/2021 21:05

Boys:
Aloysius
Galahad
Roscoe

Girl:
Gwendoline

tubbycustardtummyache · 04/02/2021 21:09

Hepzibah, I still slightly regret not using it but no good ways to shorten it

HenriettaHeffalump · 04/02/2021 21:10

Oh yes, forgot biblical names I love, like Zepporah, Ezekiel and Abraham!

Orphlids · 04/02/2021 21:15

@RosesAndHellebores, I actually have a Magnus and an Isolde! What extraordinarily good taste you have!

RosesAndHellebores · 04/02/2021 21:24

@orphlids - fabulous Grin
We gave ours classic names although they are grown up now. Who knew they would sparkle;)

35andThriving · 04/02/2021 21:40

TurkeyTrot, you have a lovely name whichever one it is. Smile

TurkeyTrot · 04/02/2021 21:48

Ah, thanks. I can share, but write it weirdly so it's not searchable. It's: C o l e t t e (just in case anyone's interested, it's a perfectly ok name to grow up with, doesn't really shorten, but is phonetic) I am middle aged, I think this name will be more popular in future.
timeforanother1 · 04/02/2021 21:51

Lovely names on here!

I really liked / like out there names and had a huge list when I was pg but dh is the total opposite so reigned me in- so much I have forgot what they were Hmm

giantwaterbottle · 04/02/2021 21:56

Oh I love this thread.

Has made me so sad that I am only just discovering Gulliver! What a wonderful name, I want one more DS desperately so I can name him this. Gully for short. But alas we are done 😭

Some names I loved;

Hector
Humphrey
Magnus
River
Rex
Odin
Arrow
Caspian

Galadriel
Celeste
Ethereal
Romy

Outing probably but I grew up with a boy named Rainbow Cloud 😬 (known as Cloudy which maybe isn't so bad..)

OddshoesOddsocks · 04/02/2021 22:00

Ooh! Pothole you’ve just reminded me that dd1 was almost called pebbles!

Thinking about it, the hormones must’ve hit hardest with dd1 because she had a few along those lines... Arietty stood strong though and made it onto all 3 dd’s name lists but never succeeded. Such a shame!

I LOVE Astrid, Atticus, Hermione and Cassius but dp poo poo’d them all before suggesting Femilia Hmm

I might divorce him and rename all the children to the ones that didn’t make the cut!

Twattergy · 04/02/2021 22:03

I like solid sounding old school boy names:

Winston
Jethro
Solomon
Sidney

giantwaterbottle · 04/02/2021 22:06

Also love

Wolfgang
Elden
Ike
Abel
Malachi

Puffalicious · 04/02/2021 22:10

Next door's grandchildren are Pepper and Pixie.
I know kids with these:

Shamus
Brodie
Marley (girl)
Iola
Hamish
Raivo
Innes
Pandora
Persephone
Cillian
Struan
Lauchlan
Spencer
