Emerging trends in London (or anywhere else!)

Firstly, not meaning to exclude folks outside the capital, it just seems that London tends to have some of its own trends. If you’d seen big trends where you are, I’d be interested in them too!

What names do you think are on the up and coming trends?

I saw on another thread that Stella is gaining popularity.

I’ve met quiet a lot of Arlo/ Jago/ Hugo and Margot’s so I think ‘O’ names are very popular right now.

Also lots of vintage beauts too - I’ve heard of 2 wilfreds and a Peggy born in 2021.

Elsie

Zarinea · 04/02/2021 14:42

I've come across two baby Johns in London recently - that surprised me.

Changeythenamey · 04/02/2021 15:30

Ah yes, I know a little Elsie!

And John is a great name. I’m never sure why John went out of fashion! I guess when something is really popular you’re more likely to know one and maybe not use it?

OP This site shows trends in England and Wales. It's based on official government statistics:

names.darkgreener.com/

The official stats themselves also have a report on name trends, and a section showing most popular names by region

www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/livebirths/bulletins/babynamesenglandandwales/2019

and

The last baby I know was called Walter.

vampirethriller · 04/02/2021 17:37

Pearl, Primrose and John are the latest I've heard

KirstenBlest · 04/02/2021 17:43

I think John went out of fashion after the late 1960s.
Names that are forms of John like Sean, Ian and Jack became very popular.

MoodyMarshall · 04/02/2021 17:46

I don't live in London anymore but I know a small Peggy. Names like Betty and nature names are quite popular in my bit of the SE.

The London babies I know have very 'current' names, nothing mad.

My youngest (4 years) is Bertie, which I think is getting quite popular.

WhatWouldZenoDo · 04/02/2021 18:21

Im in irelsnd and not to take the wind out of your ssils but i wanted to csll my nearly 18 year old dd Margot. I also lik3d Bruno.

So i think of the o trend as a bit jaded. As a trend that is. I still like the names!

WhatWouldZenoDo · 04/02/2021 18:27

Oh yes Peggy and Mary.

Simpler names. Lynne, Jane, Ruth will come back.
Where all names ended in "a" for decades, they will stop ending in "a"

KirstenBlest · 04/02/2021 18:40

I like Bruno. I like Margo too but Margot seems so popular now and I can't help but think that it might be something to do with a certain Ms Robbie. Names become dull when they become overused.

Tuscadero · 04/02/2021 18:45

1940s and 1950s names will be coming in. Barbara and Pamela for the girls and Geoffrey and Dennis for the boys.

ivykaty44 · 04/02/2021 18:50

Jane & John are on becoming popular

KirstenBlest · 04/02/2021 18:51

I really like Dennis and Barbara has a certain appeal. Pamela makes me think of Pammy Ewing and Palmella and her 4 sisters. Geoffrey is ok.

FluffyEggsontoast · 04/02/2021 18:54

As @florascotia2 has already said, use the dark greener website - you don't need us because there's bound to be statistical anomalies.

And by the way Stella has stayed stable for the last 20 years (!!) so @Changeythenamey it's a pretty safe choice- look at dark greener and you'll know that.there's been around 100 Stellas born each and every year for the past 20 years

Tuscadero · 04/02/2021 18:58

I'm not sure what names the trendy hippy types will move on to. I know River is popular right now.

RubyViolet · 04/02/2021 19:03

I know babies named Betsy, Edith and Ginger.

RubyViolet · 04/02/2021 19:04

A Walt, Ray and Flash too.

Tuscadero · 04/02/2021 19:05

Yikes. Flash 'arry.

Katjolo · 04/02/2021 19:41

Roman, Kit, Betsy, Elsie, Jacob, Alice

Fascinationends · 04/02/2021 19:47

There are lots of little Stellas and Arlo is the new Oliver where I am. Friend's recent new baby is called Audrey.

partyatthepalace · 04/02/2021 19:52

I am noticing early 20th century and mid century names starting to come round like Jean and Joanie... think the Victorian cottage core thing has a good way to run but the Janes and Alans will be coming -

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 04/02/2021 19:53

My bit of London gender neutral names are popular - River, Remi, Forest, Hunter, etc

That of old fashioned traditional names - Oliver, David, Jemima, Florence, etc

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 04/02/2021 20:48

Know several little Elsies, a Ray, a couple of Elizas...
