What do you think of Eric? Are there any nicknames that come to mind?

Love it. If I had another ds he would be an Erik (I have a slight preference for this spelling).

You don’t need a nickname for a two syllable name.

I really like Erica for a girl but not a fan of Eric for a boy (Sorry!).

I guess Ric(k) could be a nickname.

Previously neutral to the name, but now the first thing that pops to mind is Trumps even dumber son.

I don’t think there’s an obvious nickname for it... I don’t think anyone would spontaneously start calling him Ricky.

People are probably suggesting Rick etc because on most of these threads the OP actively wants to contrive a nickname from a name that doesn’t need one. I don’t think Eric would get inadvertent nicknames.

@JemimaTiggywinkle Thanks yeah I just wanted to ask without suggesting it to see if people would think of Ricky naturally! I’d definitely just use Eric. Our daughter is Ada and I think they go quite well together but don’t want to end up with Ada and Ricky or I’d pick something else!

When I was a teenager an eric was an erection but hopefully that is regional or has changed.

They go together in the sense they’re both granny/grandpa chic. If you were talking about them together or telling someone the names of both your children, I find “Ada and Eric” quite hard to say, you either have to enunciate very precisely or it runs on and inserts a false R sound...”Adaraneric”.

(Not that that’s necessarily enough of a consideration to put you off a name you love, obviously.)

Quite like it - feels grown-up and unfussy compared to many of the trendy boys' names. Makes me think of Vikings.

No nicknames come to mind. It doesn't cry out for one.

You could go with Frederick with nn Erik

I don't see anyone shortening it to Ricky (not least because it's longer). My friends would probably use Ezza because they have a slightly strange sense of humour about nicknames.

The Eric I knew went by Ed.

I like it and the only ones I know are just called Eric. Ricky would never occur to me from Eric, it's a nn for Richard.

I like Eric. Think Ed could work as a nn, if you really want to avoid Ricky. I wouldn't naturally shorten to anything really. Mayne Er if I was being very lazy, but probably just Eric.

I personally don't like it as I'm not a fan of the old lady / old man name trend and it makes me think of Eric pollard from emmerdale.

However in saying that I actually know of 2 baby Eric's so obviously it's due a revival!
