Baby brother for Emrys

Usplusone · 03/02/2021 10:29

Hi all, I'm posting out of desperation as we are really struggling with baby names for our DS due in March.
We already have one DS called Emrys. Bit of a background: we live in Wales non-welsh speaking so would only go for another Welsh name if it could be pronounced properly by non-native speakers. Loved Idris and Emlyn but both are too similar to Emrys.
Basically excluded all the Welsh names we like. Now on to other names... What does everyone think of:
Aiden, Rowan or Ethan?
Bit nervous of using the same initial twice too, any opinions?

What about Huw or Owain? Both fairly easy to pronounce by non Welsh speakers.

Usplusone · 03/02/2021 10:49

I like Owain, DH doesn't. He's also vetoed Osian and Dylan, Tomos and Harri. We've ruled out Tristan and Iwan. Really out of Welsh names so I've given up suggesting them!

Emrys is good.

Aidan, Ethan and Rowan are a bit ordinary in comparison.

How about Iestyn?

DacwMamYnDwad · 03/02/2021 11:26

Presumably you want something with no potential pronunciation or spelling issues, which rules out many.

If you don't mind anglicised names, how about Evan, Lloyd or Vaughan?
Most of the names I can think of are those of people I know, or their children, or are a bit run-of-the-mill. Gethin, Aled, etc.

YoniAndGuy · 03/02/2021 11:56

Rowan's really overused.

Both Aidan and Ethan are just really similar to Emrys! I have a feeling your DH might just have to start thinking out of the box a bit. Sounds like he's super familiar with the shape and sound of Emrys so he's only 'ok' with names that pretty much match it.

Emrys is a pretty unusual Welsh name choice so it's pretty odd to think that all other Welsh names aren't acceptable. Again, sounds like he's just got tunnel vision.

How about Talfryn? Tal for short.

plain old ones:

Rhodri
Teifion
Euros (though wouldn't have two Es)
Alwyn
Mabon

Honestly, he doesn't get to just veto everything if he's not willing to actively suggest other options that don't just sound like Emrys with a couple of different letters

Whatsyourflava · 03/02/2021 11:58

Emrys is lovely and outside the top 750 names.
Rowan and Ethan are pretty ubiquitous in comparison, though I do like Ethan.
I prefer Rowan for a girl but Rowan and Roman are two of the fastest rising trendy names and having a moment so likely to date. Have you got any others in your list?

DacwMamYnDwad · 03/02/2021 12:14

Alwyn isn't welsh it just looks Welsh. Euros too tricky - €s.
Mabon is good.

MechantGourmet · 03/02/2021 12:29

Emrys is such a fantastic name, it's so hard to match up to it!

What about Taliesin?

We had similar issues, and found DC2 so difficult. We went 'matchy' in the end, and I can't imagine him as anything else now (both are teens).

FluffyEggsontoast · 03/02/2021 12:42

Emrys is a great name, very underused, I've not met any.
I know of about 10 baby Rowan / Rohan / Romans though and 2 Ethans. Both Rowan and Ethan are well within the top 100 names and Rowan rising fast so likely to be top 50 soon.
Aiden is more unusual and is falling fast each and every year since it's peak in 2010. Is about to leave the top 150 names, so Aiden a better match for Emrys I'd have thought

YoniAndGuy · 03/02/2021 12:43

Of course Alwyn is Welsh. I've known at least 3 - all generations above though.
DacwMamYnDwad · 03/02/2021 12:52

It is used as a name in Wales, but the origin isn't welsh.

I know several welsh people called Richard but Richard isn't a welsh name.

TheVanguardSix · 03/02/2021 12:57

Osian and Emrys

MechantGourmet · 03/02/2021 13:24

I like Macsen and Cadellin too (but Macsen is maybe quite popular at the moment?).

UselessYoke · 03/02/2021 13:28

Emrys is really lovely. I think Rowan and Ethan pale in comparison. Aidan is nice enough.

I think you’re stuck because you chose such a lovely, special name for your first!

I’ve always loved the name Aneurin, although appreciate it might be dated now. I’m not Welsh Grin.

MonaChopsis · 03/02/2021 13:43

Other lovely Welsh options: Bleddyn, Cynan, Iolo, Ieuan.

Love Macsen but agree that it's getting popular... However that's all relatively speaking, there still aren't many around here.

Whatishappenin · 03/02/2021 13:46

Bobi?

FluffyEggsontoast · 03/02/2021 15:30

Griffin?

YoniAndGuy · 03/02/2021 17:19

Oh god it's not you is it MikeUniformMike?!

Makes sense now...

DacwMamYnDwad · 03/02/2021 17:56

No.
Edwyn isn't welsh either, but it's nice.

DappledThings · 03/02/2021 18:30

I know a 5 year old Emrys with a brother called Madoc. Both lovely names that go really well together.

BertieBob · 03/02/2021 18:35

I have a Gruffydd so I am obviously bias. But I think welsh names are lovely. We also considered Idris, Ifor, Gethin, Ieuan, Madoc and Berwyn.

Usplusone · 03/02/2021 18:36

Thank you everyone/diolch pawb for your opinions and suggestions! I liked Madoc and Taliesin too. I'm going to carry on throwing suggestions at DH. It's hard when we love the name Emrys so much to find another!

CaffiSaliMali · 03/02/2021 18:44

Oh I love Emrys. My first thought was Osian but I see it has been vetoed.

Would he go for something like Jac or Marc?

Macsen is nice and Macs is a nice nickname. Ioan?

Emrys, whilst easy to say if not Welsh/Welsh speaking, is quite Welsh (compared to something more mainstream like Owen) so it's hard to think of non-Welsh names to go with it.

I think Aiden is the best bet of the 3 you have suggested with Emrys. Rowan is nice but very trendy, unlike Emrys and Ethan means a second Mr E surname in the house.

If you like Rowan what about Rory, or Ronan?

If you don't mind poaching a Cornish name, Jago?

polanama · 03/02/2021 18:54

Ianto

Arrierttyclock · 03/02/2021 19:15

I think Macsen goes really nicely with Emrys
