What do you think? I know mumsnetters are always brutally honest which is needed.

Big bro is Louis x

Quite like felix, don't get the Fox nickname.

YawnyOwl · 30/01/2021 19:35

NOOOOOOOO

BlueTimes · 30/01/2021 19:36

I also don’t get the nickname. Felix always makes me think it’s the name of a cat and if you combined with Fox, I’d think it even odder.

Divebar · 30/01/2021 19:38

I’m not wild about Felix which I associate with naughty boys but I like Fox - I would just go for that!

BabbleBee · 30/01/2021 19:39

I like Felix, but can’t see how you get Fox from it.

HavelockVetinari · 30/01/2021 19:39

Fox isn't a nickname for Felix, it would probs be commented on as unusual (unless likely to be a redhead?).

Nowt wrong with it though, if you like it then go for it. I really like the name Felix. Fox less so (despite swooning over David Duchovny as Fox Mulder as a teen!) but it's not by any means a bad name - it's just that my 3 chickens were killed by a bastarding fox last year, grr! Angry Grin

SionnachRua · 30/01/2021 19:40

The Fox nickname is very forced imo, a bit try hard. If you asked me what's the first animal nickname I could think of for Felix, I'd say Kitty...

I think Felix and Louis do 'go' together but not mad about Felix.

Mischance · 30/01/2021 19:41

Fox!! - are you serious?!

AuntieStella · 30/01/2021 19:41

No - Felix is so strongly associated with cats that the nn Fox just doesn't seem remotely right.

It's a lovely name and only two syllables - you don't really need a nn at all (it's not like shortening a 4 syllable name to one or two from the off). Something might emerge spontaneously later on

Amiable · 30/01/2021 19:43

I really like both, I say go for it OP.

LubaLuca · 30/01/2021 19:44

You could call him anything and give the nickname Fox if that's what you want to call him at home.

Are you wondering if Fox is a valid shortening of Felix? It isn't really. Nobody would think it was a shortened name like Dave or Charlie, they'd just think it was a cute family pet name for him.

cheesebubble · 30/01/2021 19:45

Funny enough, I read it on Reddit, so that's where the association comes from. Felix is probably associated with the kitty because of the cat food?

Since I've been pregnant we've been discussing names and we cannot agree on one name we actually like. I love love love henry but it's a strong no from hubby. He loves Logan, strong no from me.

Just trying to find alternatives and the wider group here says no, so probably a no.

Was it on /r/namenerds? I like that sub but I don't think it's a great barometer of how acceptable a name actually is.

I really just can't see a connection between Felix and Fox tbqh. If you want to call him Fox I'd just use it as a middle name and then call him Fox in daily life.

Firebird83 · 30/01/2021 19:50

Felix is nice but I don’t like Fox at all.

123cantthinkofausername · 30/01/2021 19:50

Ah I have a son called Felix I think its a lovely name and really suits my little boy , his nickname is usually fe or occasionally fe fe fox actually Smile

florascotia2 · 30/01/2021 20:04

The association is nothing to do with the catfood.
Felis is the biological name for the cat species. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat
Calling Felix 'Fox' would be about a relevant/appropriate as calling him 'Dog'

In Latin, by coincidence, felix means fortunate or happy.Hence the name Felicity.

CorianderBee · 30/01/2021 20:07

I like it 🤷‍♀️

WhatWouldZenoDo · 30/01/2021 20:08

What about Rex?
Fox sounds silly but Rex is a similar sound but more sensible

cheesebubble · 30/01/2021 20:13

@SionnachRua that's why I've got mumsnet to double check!

@florascotia2 I only knew about happy/fortunate, was quite a HP fan when young.

@WhatWouldZenoDo not for me unfortunately, reminds me of a dog.

I’ve heard it from Reddit before, but I tend for find that the name subreddit has a huge tolerance for contrived nicknames, whereas mumsnet dislikes any form of preplanned nickname.

Personally, I don’t see the problem with going for it, as long as you accept that it might not stick and are happy to exclusively use Felix if the nickname doesn’t work out. I think Felix is far better than Fox and that Fox as a nickname is far better than as a standalone name.

WeAreHalfWayThere · 30/01/2021 21:22

Why do you need a nickname?

AdaColeman · 30/01/2021 21:31

I like Felix very much.

It will be entirely up to you to use Fox as a nn at home, but there is no guarantee that Fox will become his nn at school or elsewhere, as there is no connection between the two names other than the initial letter.

BirdIsland · 30/01/2021 21:35

I know a Felix, nn Fox. Wonder if it's him on Reddit, wouldn't be surprised.

partyatthepalace · 30/01/2021 21:56

I don’t like the name Felix, but regardless of that I think people associate it with cats? So fox is a weird and forced nickname.

You could just call him Fox but that’s a v strange combo with Louis.

MrsApplepants · 30/01/2021 22:05

I thought nicknames were given in affection by friends and stuck over time, not decided pre-birth. Clearly I’m behind the times. I do like Fox though, but as an actual name, sort of sly and courageous all at once.
