Aria for a girl? Has it become common?

My boyfriend really likes the name Aria, but I'm a but hesitant after the game of thrones hype

Never personally watched it but don't want everyone to think we've named her after a character in a show we haven't seen 🙈

Thoughts please ❤️

Literally everyone will think she’s named after the show, sorry.

sadpapercourtesan · 26/01/2021 19:41

I'm not a fan, it reminds me of opera Grin

How about Ariana or Ariane?

nowbringmethathorizon · 26/01/2021 19:43

I thought GOT was Arya?

Aria is something opera related isn't it??

foodtoorder · 26/01/2021 19:47

Additionally it is the name of a hotel in Las Vegas.

Sorry not a fan.

ivfbeenbusy · 26/01/2021 19:49

Aria is everywhere now - I probably know 3/4 all under 2 years old. I think naming children very obviously after a tv character is a bit........downmarket and unimaginative sorry

Sexnotgender · 26/01/2021 20:14

It’s really common and not my favourite. It’s not awful but I wouldn’t pick it.

LucasLeesEyebrows · 26/01/2021 20:16

DD has an Aria in her class. Her parents are Italian, so I’m guessing her name is more affiliated with opera. Also GoT was Arya.

Firebird83 · 26/01/2021 20:20

It’s very trendy. I think it will sound dated in a few years.

Flymetothestars · 26/01/2021 22:14

I don't know any apart from one friend of a friend's baby. They've never seen GOT, they just liked the meaning.

Flymetothestars · 26/01/2021 22:15

Name Aria looks to have peaked. It stayed at number 48 in 2018 and 2019 so growth has totally stopped.

I love it

TheBeesKnee · 26/01/2021 22:17

The thing is, Aria and Arya sound exactly the same so the spelling is kind of irrelevant, people will think you've named your DD after GOT.

I probably wouldn't. Arianna is a nice alternative.

I wouldn't say both of those the same. Aria to me is Ar-ee-a and Arya is Are-ya
Orphlids · 26/01/2021 22:38

I have seen GOT, but I wouldn't assume the parents of an Aria had pinched the name from the programme. I would however, as always, get all excited, because surely, surely anyone who named their child Aria must be a huge opera fan, only to be horribly disappointed when it turns out not to be the case, and the closest thing to opera they had ever come was running after the ice cream van while it played Just One Cornetto.

Eleoura · 26/01/2021 22:39

I've seen Aria come up a great deal recently, so maybe its becoming more common? I also don't know the Game of thrones connection, but its a music award in Australia. Similar to calling a child Mobo, Brit award, Mercury prize, Grammy or billboard. Obvioulsy not an issue if you child never travels outside the UK!

Taylrse · 26/01/2021 22:46

I haven't heard that name. I actually pronounced Aria and Arya differently when I read them at first.

I think it's a nice name

sozzledsantax · 26/01/2021 22:46

I think it became popular after GOT and I'm sure it's in pretty little liars too.

Despite it supposedly being very popular, I only know 1 little girl called it.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/01/2021 23:02

Imo Aria (this spelling) became popular because of combination of the Pretty Little Liars TV show and that fact that similar sounding short, vowel heavy names were already popular (Ava, Mia etc).

I think as long as you don't use the obviously linked Game of Thrones spelling (and don't mind the fact that it's trendy/popular), Aria is still useable because people may think you've chosen it for the elegant music connotations instead.

intheshallows · 27/01/2021 05:05

There's an Aria in DC1s room at nursery and the very first thing I thought of what game of thrones, despite the different spelling.

Oneandabean · 27/01/2021 05:30

I know several arias, most were after the GoT character, they just preferred the aria spelling.

Ellada19 · 27/01/2021 06:13

I haven’t met any Aria’s so I don’t think it’s super popular. It makes me think of opera. I think it’s really pretty. :)

Thefaceofboe · 27/01/2021 21:31

GOT is Arya, not Aria.

Thefaceofboe · 27/01/2021 21:32

Sorry posted too soon ^ and they are pronounced slightly different

Whatsyourflava · 27/01/2021 21:48

Great name! Love it!
Never watched GOT and not met an Aria yet

sozzledsantax · 27/01/2021 22:30

GOT does spell it Arya, but it is pronounced the same way...

MercyBodle · 28/01/2021 07:05

Aria and Arya are everywhere. Since the name is a strong trend at the moment that would put me off much more than any show reference.
