My boyfriend really likes the name Aria, but I'm a but hesitant after the game of thrones hype

Never personally watched it but don't want everyone to think we've named her after a character in a show we haven't seen 🙈

Thoughts please ❤️

I think a lot of people pronounce the game of thrones character as Aria even though it's spelt Arya. Even on the show it was often said more like Aria as I recall. So I think the difference between the two for some wouldn't be picked up on - not to mention a lot more have seen the show than read the books so won't be familiar with the exact spelling. I would probably think you were fans of the books/show. It's not as out there though as Khalessi or Daenerys and wouldn't make me cringe like those ones do. It does sound more like a name that could have been popular at the moment, without GOT, given the trends for short names with lots of vowels.

unicornpower · 28/01/2021 08:16

I think it is popular although I do really like it! Although I first heard it in pretty little liars rather than game of thrones so you will always have the links to popular TV shows with it. However i think its a lovely name so go for it!

notacooldad · 28/01/2021 08:19

It looks like in in a minority.
I haven't seen GOT so don't know any characters.
I have no interest in opera and therefore would never have made a connection.
I don't know any Aria's or Arya's.
I am around lot if very small children on a day to day basis but have never come across any with this name.

SushiGo · 28/01/2021 08:20

I don't know any, I really like it and wouldn't assume GoT. I didn't watch it but even I know the spelling is different!

Whatsyourflava · 28/01/2021 08:47

Love it
Wouldn't have made the GOT connection but who cares anyway there's bound to be tv or film characters associated with most names, I wouldn't let it put you off

bourbonne · 28/01/2021 09:11

I didn't know about Game of Thrones but I think it's a bit nothing-y.

aSofaNearYou · 28/01/2021 09:48

I wouldn't think you'd named her after GOT if it was spelt Aria, that's already a long established name and makes me think of opera.

KirstenBlest · 28/01/2021 11:45

Nothingy.

blossomhillx · 28/01/2021 13:04

Loved this name since pretty little liars

Sarahlm123 · 07/02/2021 10:18

No because game of thrones is Arya pronounced are ya and Aria is pronounced ar-ee-ahh
Aria is pretty and that’s what I called my 1 year old daughter don’t know any round here with it
Everyone will have an opinion on a name but I personally think it’s gorgeous 🥰

HenriettaHeffalump · 07/02/2021 11:21

I like the name and I think I only know one. But, yes, most people, (including me, I think), would assume you have named her because of the GoT character, Arya.

I also know a girl names Khaleesi fwiw. That has to be GoT I think?

TinyCake · 07/02/2021 12:43

Do you like Ayla?

I wouldn't think of GOT with Aria I'd think of opera.

Olinguita · 17/02/2021 00:43

Mega popular name at the moment in India and with British Indians for baby girls. You can't move for Aryas in my husband's neighbourhood in Mumbai.

barnhen · 17/02/2021 01:21

I didn't make the connection with GOT, but my set of scales is called the Aria. First thing I thought of. I imagine Fitbit will have withdrawn it from the market by the time your child is in school though!

abitfunny · 17/02/2021 07:34

Not keen at all I don’t like how it sounds!

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 17/02/2021 07:43

I think people will make a GOT connection even though it's spelled differently, and you'll find it annoying.

Years ago I met a family with a little girl called Pebbles, and made a comment about the Flintstones. They exploded. Apparently nothing to do with the Flintstones and everyone said that. Oops. (Pebbles though, wtf were they expecting to happen?).

Marcipex · 17/02/2021 07:49

I know several, also several Ariannas, whose parents all simultaneously thought that was pretty and different.

SimonJT · 17/02/2021 07:50

Aria is a very popular Indian name, it means noble. It’s a lovely name.

zigaziga · 17/02/2021 07:56

It is quite faddy -

names.darkgreener.com/#aria

Up from basically nowhere to 42nd.

What’s interesting about that chart is that in the mid 90s it was vanishingly rare as a name but used pretty much as often for boys as girls. In the last few years it has, out of nowhere, become quite a popular girls name.

Notmulan · 17/02/2021 12:32

Popular not common.

user1493494961 · 17/02/2021 21:34
