Sine?

Husband is half Scottish/ half Irish so we're looking for a traditional Gaelic name. Thoughts on Sine? How would you pronounce it?

We have a 4 syllable surname so want a one-two syllable first name.

Middle name will be a traditional Welsh name (my side), we're thinking Ffion, Alys or Elin.

I'm Scottish but wouldn't know how to pronounce it. Sheena?

SionnachRua · 21/01/2021 15:11

I'm all for Irish and Scottish names but this one just makes me think of cos and tan.

Is it pronounced Shee-na, possibly?

PotteringAlong · 21/01/2021 15:12

Without knowing how it is meant to be pronounced I would say sign.

I did think boy until I saw your middle names!

Squeejit · 21/01/2021 15:12

No idea how to pronounce it. Are you living in Scotland or Ireland?

PotteringAlong · 21/01/2021 15:12

And yes to the secondary school lifetime of maths puns!

ProudAuntie76 · 21/01/2021 15:13

I read it the same way you would pronounce “sign” Blush though that’s obviously down to my ignorance! Even though I’m a Celt!

It made me think of Maths. Trigonometry.
Sine. Cosine etc.

turkeyboots · 21/01/2021 15:13

I know an adult one who changed her name when living out of Ireland as being called sine (as in maths) got too much.
It's lovely, but I wouldn't use it.

lovablequalities · 21/01/2021 15:13

Sheena is the best English pronunciation. It doesn't sound quite like that in Gaelic but close enough.

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 21/01/2021 15:14

I’m guessing sinny or Sheena but I immediately think sign when I read it

EileenGC · 21/01/2021 15:14

I'd pronounce it See-nuh/nah. I think it's a nice name, first time I've heard it.

KirstenBlest · 21/01/2021 15:14

I'm one of the nationalities you mention and I would say it as Sheena.
i suspect it would cause a lifetime of corrections.

KirstenBlest · 21/01/2021 15:15

It means the same as Siân, which might be easier to live with, or Siwan, which is pretty.

CoffeeRequiredNow · 21/01/2021 15:16

I believe it's pronounced "see-nah".

I personally wouldn't choose a name that needs explanation how to spell/pronounce as it's such a pain every time you meet someone new, but that's just my opinion.

TierFourTears · 21/01/2021 15:16

I read sign, and immediately had the same trigonometry thoughts as others.

SomeLikeItTepid · 21/01/2021 15:17

If I saw it written down I'd pronounce it Shin-ae.

CrochetOrBust · 21/01/2021 15:17

I immediately thought of maths as well

Kitkat151 · 21/01/2021 15:18

I know a danish Sine..... she pronounces it Seena

Mischance · 21/01/2021 15:19

I am surprised you are considering a name that you do not know how to pronounce!!

I don't either, and neither would anyone else.

A rethink required.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/01/2021 15:19

I thought it was Sìne? Which I think is pronounced like Sheena.

Without makes me think of sine nomine/loco or sine curves, which would then be si-nay or sign.

nimbuscloud · 21/01/2021 15:20

My friend has a Síne - pronounced Sheena.

TalbotAMan · 21/01/2021 15:20

"Sine! Give us a wave!"

emmathedilemma · 21/01/2021 15:20

I can't get past trigonometry either! I've never come across it in scotland or ireland so have no idea how to pronounce it other than how it's spelt.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 21/01/2021 15:20

I wouldn't go for one name that would cause too much confusion on spelling pronunciation, never mind two.

hohohopeless · 21/01/2021 15:21

I obly know how to pronounce it as had a friend called Sine.

Sheena.

Kitkat151 · 21/01/2021 15:21

@Kitkat151

I know a danish Sine..... she pronounces it Seena
She says people in the UK mispronounce it all the time.
