Completely torn between two 'boring' names!

I'm beginning to panic a bit as we still haven't settled on a name for our baby girl- and I'm desperate not to wait until she's here to decide (so please don't suggest that as an option!)

We love both Emily and Alice. I've always loved Emily and that's the name we settled on at first and started using it to refer to bump. But I felt that we hadn't tried hard enough to explore all options and after reading the whole baby name book I thought Alice was nice. My husband prefers Alice too (although he does like Emily).

So we settled on Alice thinking it was slightly more underused and I got very excited about it. But we keep on accidentally referring to her as Emily still and I can't help but feel in my gut I prefer the name Emily?

So which do you think? Emily or Alice?

"we keep on accidentally referring to her as Emily still and I can't help but feel in my gut I prefer the name Emily?"

Emily then. It doesn't matter which name we prefer, Emily is The One.

And whichever you use, don't use the other one as a middle name, it would be a waste! Save it in case you have another DD one day.

(FWIW I think Alice might be more popular than Emily atm but you'd need to check the latest name charts.)

Both beautiful and not boring. Alice edges
It for me

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 21/01/2021 07:39

I far prefer Emily.

I have one of each in my life & while they're both lovely, Emily is nicer to say...

Littlepoppet1 · 21/01/2021 07:41

Both nice! Can you not use both and have one as the middle name?

Iwantmychairback · 21/01/2021 07:45

Do you prefer the nickname Em or Al (Ali). Chances are he r name will be shortened at some point, by someone.......

firsttimebabymama2020 · 21/01/2021 07:48

What about a mix of the two with Amelie? Both lovely names by the way.

Lemonlemon88 · 21/01/2021 07:55

Tbh both are lovely. Emily Alice or Alice Emily.

Bilgepumper · 21/01/2021 07:57

Both lovely names. Emily Alice sounds good ❤️

Catty1720 · 21/01/2021 08:01

Can she not be Emily-Alice Surname?? Or Alice as a middle name?? Both names are lovely.

intheshallows · 21/01/2021 08:05

Thanks so much for all your responses so far! For those saying to use one as a middle name- we won't do that as already have one picked out (a family name), and as a previous poster said, would like to save the other name for the future!

I love the name Emily, not keen on Alice.

intheshallows · 21/01/2021 08:11

And to answer some questions- not keen on Amelie for some reason, and I prefer the nn Em over Ali (although not sure that Alice would ever get shortened)?

Emily is overused and I find it extremely unimaginative and dull.

Alice is beautiful.

funnyoldonion · 21/01/2021 08:18

Emily as I love Emily Winfield Martin

Pudding01 · 21/01/2021 08:19

I think you already know which you're going to choose OP 😉

You keep calling bump Emily and you prefer the nickname Em...

Go with your gut x

ellenpartridge · 21/01/2021 08:20

I love them both! Both were top of my list though I was probably going to go for Alice (but having a boy in the end). If Emily feels right go with that but can't go wrong with either name. Lovely classics.

AliasGrape · 21/01/2021 08:25

Wait till you meet her honestly. You have two nice options that you like, that’s great. The baby doesn’t need a name till she’s 6 weeks or something but I bet you’ll know once she’s arrived.

We had 2 or 3 options for a girl, none of which I was entirely happy with. 1 was the name I’d always imagined calling a girl but suddenly wasn’t sure of, and 2 were names we liked well enough but couldn’t absolutely decide on.

The minute she was placed on my chest I looked at her and thought/ said ‘oh hello my *ddname’ and that was it. FWIW it was the name I’d always loved, I think I just had a wobble about it because it’s hard to connect it to a baby you’ve never met.

(Thank goodness she was a girl though as we had NOTHING for a boy, a couple of ‘maybes’ at best).

Glitterinthegrey · 21/01/2021 08:30

@AliasGrape that was us too - we still joke, 10 years on, that had DD been a boy, he'd still be nameless.

PP, I think they're both really pretty names but you clearly already think of her as Emily.

SimplyRadishing · 21/01/2021 08:32

@EdgeOfACoin

Get a coin.

Heads: Emily
Tails: Alice

Toss coin.

Just before you look at which way the coin has landed, see if you are secretly hoping for a particular outcome. If so, that is the name you choose.

If not, let coin decide.

This 100%.
Hazelmazel · 21/01/2021 08:35

Both are lovely names, but it does seem that Emily is the one for you. I know an Alice whose nickname is Ace, which I love.
And very wise not to use both names up, we did that for our DS and when I was pregnant again realised there wasn't a single other boys name we both liked! Fortunately we had a girl!

WalkingOnStarshine · 21/01/2021 08:36

I prefer Alice. It's a classic name but not one you hear of much. I'm not keen on Emily but it's just a personal opinion - every adult Emily I've known has been really shy and quiet.

Amdone123 · 21/01/2021 08:36

Emily.

Bluntness100 · 21/01/2021 08:41

Emily for me too.

AcrobaticCardigan · 21/01/2021 08:42

Alice is beautiful. Emily is a bit boring.

GwendolineWindowlene · 21/01/2021 08:45

Alice has more about it than Emily, but it seems that for you Emily is The One so you should go with it.
