Lucy or Marianne?

All right dear MN, I now believe after maaany hours debating that we have our winning duo for DD due in February:
Marianne
Or
Lucy

Which one do you prefer and why? What kind of little girl do you imagine for both?

Our surname is one syllable, both go well with it.

Marianne Lucy is perfect. Or are you saving Lucy for another daughter?

@pemba I think we will give Marianne Lucy. If we have a DD2 she would be Eliza Faye.

I think Marianne is beautiful, it's not a commonly used name whereas Lucy is OK but it's very popular. ps I may be slightly biased as I have an Arianne 😊

@Samistar Arianne is gorgeous! In French we spell it Ariane, it’s not as used as it should be!

And @Samistar thank you, I keep hesitating between both, now having firmly Lucy in the middle name category. So hard to choose!

I dont really know why but earlier this year (and well before seeing Normal People.on tv) I thought of the name Marianne and how much I liked it and wondered why I never thought of it for my DD. Wish I had, I love it and actually prefer it to my DDs name altho I feel bad about that.
I do like Lucy but for me it's not as elegant/interesting..

I just thought of Marianne hearing someone call their daughter that name in the street, despite reading the book beforehands and watching a bit of the show so unrelated to Netflix as well!

I almost called my DD (Erin) Lucy 4 years ago. If I have another DD I like Lucy Iris 🙂

I,d choose marianne after the trepidation Victorian explorer marianne north. She went all over the world when women really didn’t. She has her own art gallery in Kew Gardens too

Hi OP. My DDs name is Charlotte but we mostly call her Lottie. Think I'm just someone who finds it hard to decide!

Both are lovely but I think Marianne wins for me.

Marianne makes me think a bit of Normal People but that's not a bad thing; also the Leonard Cohen song So Long, Marianne.

Lucy is very pretty too.

Probably on balance would pick Marianne.

Both nice, but Marianne is a bit more special, and shortens easily to Marnie or Mari. Lucies tend to get called "Lu" "Lulu" and usually hate it!

@thenewduchessofhastings thanks for the suggestion! I’m afraid in French Lucienne starts to sound a bit dated, lots of friends of my grandma would be called that and it’s not yet achieved “granny chic” status

@Kokeshi123 ooo I love Marnie as a nickname. Don’t like Lu or Luce either as a nickname so I think it settles it for me!
