Which do you prefer? Ophelia or Effie? Middle name of Florence.

Thanks!

I’d go for Ophelia and then I think the nickname Effie works really well.

user1493494961 · 17/01/2021 10:30

I also think Effie would work as nn for Ophelia.

MargeryMcLatchie · 17/01/2021 10:35

Fan of the Pre-Raphaelites OP?

Not sure why are all previous posters suggesting use of a nickname for a beautiful name like Ophelia! I probably prefer Ophelia as a name but I can see that Effie would be easier to live with.

CorpusCallosum · 17/01/2021 10:36

Ophelia 100%

Enko · 17/01/2021 10:38

Really love Effie bit effie Florence is hard to say so if stuck on Florence I would pick Ophelia

TheQueenRaven · 17/01/2021 10:40

Ophelia is beautiful but oh god! it would be pretentious to name a girl that in 21st century Britain. And Effie sounds daft.

Just my opinion, but I am right.

bourbonne · 17/01/2021 10:43

Neither, sorry! Both awful in different ways. Effie sounds like a nickname a toddler would give themselves.

partyatthepalace · 17/01/2021 11:03

Effie really sounds like a nn (and is - for Euphemia or whatever) so I wouldn’t call someone it - esp as it IS a bit close to effin hell. Fine as a nn for a little kid.

I have noticed a few people posting c Ophelia so think it’s coming into use. So use it if you like it, Or there is Beatrice etc - who else did the PFs paint?! Or if you want a Shakespearean heroine Cordelia is plucky.

Oneandabean · 17/01/2021 11:56

Just my opinion, but I am right.- sorry but 😂😂

Both are lovely names but Effie is generally used as a nickname. It could potentially be a nn for Ophelia I suppose. I don’t think it’s pretentious at all and I see it popping up more regularly now.

mamaoffourdc · 17/01/2021 12:14

Love both x

MercyBodle · 17/01/2021 12:48

Ophelia with nickname Effie, then you get to use both.

Swingometer · 17/01/2021 12:50

Ophelia sounds more like a proper grown up name to I prefer it for that reason

MummyInTheNecropolis · 17/01/2021 12:53

I know a lovely little Ophelia who has always been known as Effie. Use both!

Jellington · 17/01/2021 12:54

I do like Ophelia. We have considered it as a girls name. But... we decided against it as our girls name (we don't actually have any girls though!) because we thought it could cause some issues with playground teasing. Mostly because it has feel in the middle of it, you can imagine what teenage boys might do with it. Effie I also like.
I immediately think skins but I'm not sure that's a problem.

Cbeebiesrehab · 17/01/2021 12:57

My daughter is Effie (Evelyn on BC) and we know of an Ophelia known as Effie. Ophelia on BC and Effie as a diminutive...problem solved!☺️

scentedgeranium · 17/01/2021 12:58

Ophelia. Effie is twee and will lead to all kinds of F-off ribaldry in the playground.

London1977 · 17/01/2021 12:59

Well anything but effie..(what the effing hell are you thinking of...is all that springs to mind).

I love Ophelia. I like the name of the actress Ophelia whose second name I can't remember but she was in Sherlock. She grew up on a council estate and her mum gave her that name..which is posh, let's be honest...and it made her stand out and is so beautiful!

ReggaePerrin · 17/01/2021 13:03

Definitely Ophelia.

Is your surname Balls?

Cbeebiesrehab · 17/01/2021 13:29

I can also vouch for the fact she has never had any eff off jokes/suffered bullying of any sort because of her name. Because a lot of children are more mature than adults😉

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 17/01/2021 18:34

Effie is a fairly well used nn for Ophelia (or indeed any name with a strong F/Ph sound). So I'd use the very beautiful Ophelia personally - then you get the best of both worlds.

DramaAlpaca · 18/01/2021 02:48

Ophelia is beautiful but it's a very sad name to me, thanks to Shakespeare. I couldn't use it, so tragic.

I can't be doing with Effie. It's so fluffy and nothingy. OK as a diminutive but as a given name on its own? Just no.

Love Florence though.

Tucancrossing · 18/01/2021 04:20

Effie definitely sounds like a nickname for Ophelia. Personally I don't like either... Ophelia has always sounded like 'I'll feel ya' to me like some sort of creepy threat, and Effie just doesn't sound like a name. But if you like them I think you should use Ophelia nn Effie.

TheQueenRaven · 18/01/2021 12:49

How do you get Effie from Ophelia?

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 18/01/2021 13:25

Love both ans agree that Effie is a natural sounding nn from Ophelia! So I'd choose Ophelia nn Effie

TheQueenRaven · 18/01/2021 13:42

Are you saying Ee-fee or Eff-y? If it's the latter, how do you get that from Ophelia?
