Ella?

Hi everyone, you've helped us so much with comments on various names. We have been swinging back and forth with long names shortened to nice nicknames, vetoed about 100 as I've discovered I'm truly fussy!! Now undecided between Emilia, Daisy and Ella. Family told me kindly that daisy is a cows name which has completely put us off despite it being a forerunner initially. Now I'm just thinking that simple is better! Ella, common yes, but pretty? I know that Amelia and Emilia which are our other options seem to be far more popular here than Ella, but what are your thoughts?

Ella has a lilt to it that I find very attractive.
Doesn’t have a dated feel to it either

pinkhousesarebest · 20/01/2021 20:34

I have an Elfie in my class which I think is the most beautiful name. Still like Ella and agree that they are mostly late teens early 20s now.

WithASpider · 20/01/2021 20:45

My 6yo neice is Ella, so is my friend's 2yo. There's several at DS's primary. It's a bit bland for me, but nice enough.

DaniX91 · 20/01/2021 21:00

Our nearly 11 month old daughter is called Daisy. She was going to be Ella then Evie, Daisy was an option but not the favourite. Then we saw her and she just is Daisy so went with that! Love buying clothing etc with daisies on.

PetraRabbit · 21/01/2021 21:30

I'm afraid I don't like Daisy- to say it sounds like a cow is rude but I do think it's a bit of a silly, girlie name for an adult.
Ella isn't my taste but it is elegant and I think most people will like it. I'd go with that one.
Emilia is a name I always loved but I feel Amelia is so popular that it takes away from Emilia.

SionnachRua · 21/01/2021 21:46

Ella is a nice name. Boring but nice.

ClementineFox · 23/01/2021 18:38

I have an Ella, I was so worried about the popularity of the name that I called her Eleanor and made Ella a nn, but in the last four years I have only met one other kid called Ella! Countless kids called Luna and Seren though.

It’s a beautiful name, and I think Ella Daisy is a lovely choice.

lesbianbabymama · 23/01/2021 18:45

How about Ellen if you want a name a little less popular but still sounds like Ella?

RuthW · 23/01/2021 18:46

Ella is nice.

Skyla2005 · 23/01/2021 18:57

I love the name Ella it's my nieces name and her twin is Freya they are beautiful. I don't think it's that common if you like it go for it !

jackstini · 23/01/2021 19:12

Love it, I think it's timeless

I know 2, one is 15 and one is 24
Plus one that passed away aged 97!

You could go with a longer name ending in 'Ella' to give her more options when older, but I do like it as is

I also know an Eliana, which I think is lovely

sortmylifeoutplease · 23/01/2021 19:14

I like them all, but prefer Amelia to Emilia.

buntingandstarcharts · 07/02/2021 14:06

Thanks so nuch everyone! i thinkkkkk we've decided on Ella with Daisy as a mn. Just need to get the niggle of 'is daisy betteras a first name' out my head 🙈

Ella Daisy sounds better than Daisy Ella, because the latter kind of flows together and sounds like Daisiella.

pickingdaisies · 07/02/2021 17:01

If you're planning on having more children, don't use up all your favourite names on the first one!
Love Ella, it's pure and elegant, but still warm. I taught a Daisy, she really suited her name. She looked nothing like a cow, and everything like a happy sunny flower.

Sausagedog1 · 07/02/2021 20:27

I find Ella so dull personally. It means girl in Spanish. I hear it and just think 'girl'.
It is perfectly fine though and of course if you love it you should use it.
I prefer Daisy.

lorettAspaghettA · 07/02/2021 22:04

Ella is currently very, very popular. I would avoid it atm.
Ella is 13th on the Top 100 - on the incline. To put that into perspective Ellie is 63rd and on the decline. Not to mention names like Bell, Bella etc are all quite common atm.

Emilia sounds like you want to go with Amelia but realise 1 out of every 2 Girl's has the name so attach an E.

buntingandstarcharts · 07/02/2021 22:41

It's so interesting - we don't know a single Ella and I've never taught one in ten years either. It's so so good to get other people's vibes for it. I'm
really hoping that Ella is different enough to never be 'ellie'?

I like the name Ella but there are a lot of them about nowadays. So it depends if that would bother you or not.

CeefBurry · 08/02/2021 12:30

Hmmm
I used to love the name Ella but there are loads at DCs school and it has put me off

Twinkie01 · 08/02/2021 12:35

There's 4 in DDs year at school, Ellas, it's a bit too common now.

buntingandstarcharts · 08/02/2021 12:40

Oh it does put me off Sad number 13 in the charts I felt wasn't top ten so much less common than other names. Maybe I'm in the minority not knowing any Ella's? Out of interest, where are you all from? X

Re your concern over Ella being nicknamed Ellie- Ellie is in fact very similar to Ella and for that reason I think it's very unusual that would occur. It would be like calling a Tim a Tom.

Cons:
•Ella refers to she/her in Spanish speaking countries however this isn't Spain or Miami so that should be ok.
•Ella is common atm. In fact it's thee most popular El name for girls. I'm in Suffolk.

Pros:
•'El' is a semitic word for God and light which is rather beautiful.

RichAssWhoopin · 08/02/2021 12:55

Eloise?

buntingandstarcharts · 08/02/2021 12:57

@RichAssWhoopin thanks, I like your pro. It's so pretty and love how it sounds but I don't forever want her to be known as first and last name. Maybe Suffolk just has lots of lovely named girls Smile I'm in south west London. Eloise to me sounds like 'elle who wees' Confused
