Colson. Pronounce Cole-son.

It's a family name and at the top of our list currently. Do you think it's too out there?

Makes me think of colon

Chameleon2003 · 07/01/2021 17:48

I straight away thought of the Bristol statue (although that is Colston).

PastaAndPizzaPlease · 07/01/2021 17:48

Agent Phil or Machine Gun Kelly springs to mind

PistolKnight · 07/01/2021 17:48

Cole son and Coll son sound the same to me

It also reminds me of Colston

PastaAndPizzaPlease · 07/01/2021 17:49

But, a hero and a good musician aren’t bad namesakes, so I’d go with it! Although be aware it might end up really popular.

yikesanotherbooboo · 07/01/2021 17:50

I think it is ok if he has relatives with the same name ie if it is a family name used as a first name . It is also absolutely fine as a middle name. I don't really like it enough to say yes to it being a first name without context.

ellenpartridge · 07/01/2021 17:53

I'm from Bristol and it also makes me think Colston so slaver connotations! Not personally keen anyway as too surnamey.

BeenHereAllDay · 07/01/2021 17:53

Colon

DueMay2021 · 07/01/2021 17:55

I really like it - it's different but not to different and works for all ages or can get shortened to Cole if he preferred it

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 07/01/2021 18:34

not a fan of surnames as first names sorry!

SendHelp30 · 07/01/2021 18:36

I would pronounce it colson. I’m sure it’s the name of the actor who plays Craig the policeman in Corrie.
Couldn’t you use it for a middle name?

Firebird83 · 07/01/2021 22:28

Coll-son and Cole-son sound the same to me too, I can’t see how they would be different?

Changemaname1 · 07/01/2021 22:47

I like it . Sounds American ? I would read it as colson though

Changemaname1 · 07/01/2021 22:50

@Firebird83 so you’d say Cole like the stuff you put on a fire without drawing the o sound out a bit ? Coll would be a Much shorter o sound . Not being goady btw accents fascinate me !

Chambored · 07/01/2021 22:50

@theconstantinoplegardener

Well, the first thing that crossed my mind was that school in Bristol that was named after a slave trader. I was trying to remember what it was called, and wondered if you were considering giving your child the same name . I've remembered now: it was Colston's school, so bit different to yours, but similar enough that some people might confuse them.
My first thought too was all the Colston references being eradicated in Bristol last year after the BLM protests. It’s very similar, so I’d rule it out on that basis.
HerMammy · 07/01/2021 22:52

I prefer family names as middle names, let them have their own name not be a wee version of someone.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/01/2021 23:24

Its okay. It's not awful but not great either. However facts are one thing a randomers opinion on mumsnet is very much another.
I do agree though it will be pronounced Coll-son rather than Cole-son.
There for I'd spell it Coleson.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/01/2021 23:25

@SendHelp30.Yeah you're right

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 07/01/2021 23:32

@Firebird83

Coll-son and Cole-son sound the same to me too, I can’t see how they would be different?
Col son v cole son.

Cohl son v coal son

Does that help?

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 07/01/2021 23:33

@greystars5.

I don't live, I don't hate it. It's fine.

I'm another Coldon though, not coleson

So could depend on if you mind a different pronunciation or not.

partyatthepalace · 07/01/2021 23:39

Not out there but not appealing. Sounds like a dull surname. Could you use as a middle name?

PattyPan · 07/01/2021 23:46

Sounds like a brand of condiments rather than a first name!

ProudAuntie76 · 08/01/2021 00:06

The fella off Corrie - Craig.

Honest opinion? Not for me but it’s not dreadful or embarrassing.

MercyBodle · 08/01/2021 00:17

I think it's fine.

giggly · 08/01/2021 00:23

It’s a no from me.
