Lavender?

What do we think of Lavender as a name for a little girl? I'm honestly not sure if I really like it or if it sounds too long and pretentious. Our other daughter is called Honor Florence, does it fit well? I'm not pregnant yet but we are trying to conceive and I'm already thinking of names.

I personally LOVE it! But I expect most people will point to the shortening Lav being a downside. I don't think it would have to be shortened though. I really like it.

SameToo · 05/01/2021 21:15

I don’t like it but then I don’t like Honor or Florence either 🤷‍♀️ I’d say it did go with that name though.

Happenchance · 05/01/2021 21:16

There's a risk that it will be shortened to Lav (toilet). I also associate lavender with room freshener, so it has double toilet connotations in my mind.

Horehound · 05/01/2021 21:17

Nope

Aquamarine1029 · 05/01/2021 21:17

It's a no from me simply because it will inevitably be shortened to Lav which makes me think of lavatory.

sorryiasked · 05/01/2021 21:18

I prefer Lavinia, softer sounding

FippertyGibbett · 05/01/2021 21:19

No, it would be shortened to Lav as In lavatory.

RickiTarr · 05/01/2021 21:20

It matches Florence well, so I would avoid problematic shortenings and use it as a middle name and find find a simpler name to balance it as you did with your first DD.

Something like Heloise or Eleanor?

Tavannach · 05/01/2021 21:21

I don't like it, I'm sorry. It's too uptight iykwim. Prefer Violet but I don't think that goes particularly well with Honor.
Hope? Maybe a bit too samey with Honor.

PainterInPeril · 05/01/2021 21:34

Lavender would work as a middle name. No one would be abbreviating it then. It reminds me of lavender fields in Provence...and Lavender Leigh (Chalet School).

DramaAlpaca · 05/01/2021 21:36

Nice in theory, as is Lavinia, but the shortening to Lav would be enough to put it into middle name territory only for me.

CloudPop · 05/01/2021 21:52

Lilac?

MimiDaisy11 · 05/01/2021 21:56

I do like it but I wouldn't use it personally. The nickname of "Lav" or "Lavy" does put me off it as I think that's a very real possibility whether my daughter likes it or not.

TopBants · 05/01/2021 21:56

I love it. My only association is with that cute kid from Matilda.

I don't think children would pick up on lav, because they don't tend to use the word lavatory. Louise or Louis, shortened to Loo, is more obviously toilet-related, and in real life I don't think it'd be an issue.

MrsFluffyMuff · 05/01/2021 21:57

I absolutely love the name Lavender, I think it's beautiful

AdelaideK · 05/01/2021 22:03

No. Will be Lav as other people have pointed out and I think it's quite a ugly harsh sounding name.

evilharpy · 05/01/2021 22:05

I'm not keen on it. I prefer Violet, do you like that?

RedMarauder · 05/01/2021 22:07

I immediately thought -
"Lavender's blue, dilly, dilly
Lavender's green
When I am king, dilly, dilly
You shall be queen:"

ghislaine · 05/01/2021 22:08

I love virtue names!

I would suggest:

Prudence
Constance
Patience.

RedMarauder · 05/01/2021 22:10

What about names like Faith, Hope, Mercy, Amethyst, Amaryllis, Marigold or Matilda?

netflixandmixedgrill · 05/01/2021 22:12

Love it

Polkadot123 · 05/01/2021 22:14

Yes I love it too to be honest and really love Lavinia

Edgeoftheledge · 05/01/2021 22:18

I quite like it

Omeara · 05/01/2021 22:20

I really don’t like it. Sorry.

Edgeoftheledge · 05/01/2021 22:22

Louise louisa etc are shortened to louWink
