Lavender?

What do we think of Lavender as a name for a little girl? I'm honestly not sure if I really like it or if it sounds too long and pretentious. Our other daughter is called Honor Florence, does it fit well? I'm not pregnant yet but we are trying to conceive and I'm already thinking of names.

Lav for short 😱

mamaoffourdc · 05/01/2021 22:23

Love it x

CountessFrog · 05/01/2021 22:35

I’ve been on MN for long enough to associate this with a very prolific troll!

TopBants · 05/01/2021 22:35

@Edgeoftheledge

Louise louisa etc are shortened to louWink
Which sounds exactly the same as loo. I doubt the fictitious kids in the hypothetical playground are writing their insults down.
CherryBlossomTree7 · 05/01/2021 22:36

Absolutely adore it OP.

Also love Lavinia.

LottaBean · 05/01/2021 22:39

@evilharpy I like Violet but its OH's grandmothers name who isn't well liked by the rest of the family as she's quite a judgemental abrasive lady so I wouldn't use it for that reason.
The shortening to 'Lav' could be an issue like you've said and maybe it is best to stick it as a middle name instead to prevent nicknames.
@CloudPop Lilac is a good suggestion with a similar sound, might ask OH's opinion on that one.
@ghislaine I did like Constance/Cadence that you listed for first DD but OH said no :(

Lilac isn't my fave but is much more usable than Lavender (I can't get past the "Lav" thing, as with Lavinia - it's different with "Lou" for Louise/a imo because it's such a common name).

Other ideas: (purple themed!) Iris, Ianthe, or maybe Viola instead of Violet (Shakespearean and can be pronounced the European way Vee - oh- la).

Or to match Honor in style: Verity, Felicity, Celia/Cecilia, Stella, Sybil, Imogen, Bryony, Beatrice, Tara, Tamsin, Rosalind/Rosamund.

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 05/01/2021 22:57

If it’s the sound you like, and inspired by the Chalet School comment above, there’s always Loveday.

HeidiOfTheAlps · 05/01/2021 23:03

I like it but Lav would put me off. Some other flower names here nameberry.com/list/97/Flower-Names-for-Girls

YouJustDoYou · 05/01/2021 23:03

As long as she's got your last name, first name doesn't really matter so much.

HeidiOfTheAlps · 05/01/2021 23:04

Some lovely names in that link

EdgeOfACoin · 06/01/2021 06:30

Nickname Lav puts me off too.

Was going to suggest Lilac, but I see someone already has.

What about Iris?

I'd be hesitant about using a name like Patience when you already have an Honor, as at that point you've established a 'theme' for your children's names.

Polkadot123 · 06/01/2021 09:59

Indigo is one of my favourites :)

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 06/01/2021 10:21

I quite like it but I wouldn’t be brave enough to use it myself. It’s a great middle name though!!!
I really love Indigo.

PoodleMoth · 06/01/2021 12:41

Love Lavender and Lilac!

YoniAndGuy · 06/01/2021 13:35

Lav! No.

Also it's not nice enough to justify it being so flowery, if you see what I mean. It's not actually amazing. Lavinia has more class, and could be Vinnie for short which is cute. If you really want to go for it call her Andromeda or Amaryllis or Loveday something equally super-wow.

With Honor:

Honor and Ariadne
Honor and Sabrina
Honor and Hebe
Honor and Lavinia is excellent
Honor and Greta

YoniAndGuy · 06/01/2021 13:37

Oh, OH not DH?

If he's having the surname, you have the first name.

If he expects a traditionally fair equal say in the first name, let's hope you're also following tradition and giving her your surname :)

Firebird83 · 06/01/2021 18:02

I love it as a middle name. That also avoids the lav problem!

Changethetoner · 06/01/2021 19:03

Lavender is a bit hippy.

VenusClapTrap · 06/01/2021 19:10

I think it’s lovely.

Agree with pp that if he’s OH not DH, you should give her your surname.

shreddednips · 06/01/2021 19:18

I really love it, it makes me think of Lavender Brown from Matilda who was very cute. Also like PP's suggestions of Loveday and Lilac!

Cbeebiesrehab · 07/01/2021 13:54

I know a Lavinia who is shorted to Livi.
I know of a Lavender that goes by Ennie.

Lavender doesn’t have to become Lav, you can either decide on a chosen diminutive and ask people to use that or ask that people don’t shorter it. Yes, kids might when she gets to school but by that point she will either identify as a given nickname or will be telling people to call her by her full name as that is what she’s used to.

shallbe · 07/01/2021 14:11

Her nick name could be Lav......

Icenii · 07/01/2021 14:14

Primrose
Rowan

joystir59 · 07/01/2021 14:16

Lavender will be trend setting.
