Seren for a boy?

I'm pregnant with baby #2, a boy this time (have a 4 yr old DD). Her name is very unusual (haven't seen it listed on any site in my extensive research this time!) but also not 'crazy'!
We like less popular names but more importantly want to love our son's name as much as we do our daughter's.
My DH is so fussy and says no to almost all my suggestions! The only name we both love is Seren.
I'm fully aware this is a 'girls' name in Wales (and a popular one at that) but in England it's rising but still unusual for sure. Anyway the sound of the name doesn't sound overly feminine to us (like Delilah or Sophia or something) and we'd like to use Ren as a NN.
Is this ridiculous? We live in England.

Definitely a girl's name.

How about Rowan?

Rathmobhaile · 22/12/2020 20:56

Senan as an alternative?

BikeRunSki · 22/12/2020 20:57

I think it’s well known enough outside Wales to be known to be a girl’s name.

Stephan?

MoChridhe · 22/12/2020 20:59

It's a girl's name

Superstardjs · 22/12/2020 20:59

Renard?

BlenheimOrange · 22/12/2020 21:00

Soren?

yearinyearout · 22/12/2020 21:00

It's a girl's name...

OverTheRubicon · 22/12/2020 21:04

Agree with Soren perhaps. Or Sennen if you have a Cornish link? Rowan? Owen?

To me Ren sounds like a girl's name too.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 22/12/2020 21:04

It's definitely a girl name. Saying that I think Eden is a girl name and I know a boy one of those too.

nextdoorshush · 22/12/2020 21:04

Søren

ZoCho · 22/12/2020 21:04

I thought this but everyone I've mentioned it to hasn't heard of it...and have agreed it doesn't inherently sound feminine. Hmmm Hmm

It means star , but definitely a girls name IMO sorry

iwantavuvezela · 22/12/2020 21:06

How about saschen ...

It’s a girls name for me (Seren)

ZoCho · 22/12/2020 21:08

Eden is a unisex name

Saying that it doesn't sound feminine is like saying Jane doesn't sound feminine because it has the same first letter as Jack, and rhymes with Shane.

It's a girl's name. You'd be calling your son Jane, and everyone even remotely Welsh he ever met would know it. He'd face a lifetime of 'do you know your name is a girl's name?'

merryhouse · 22/12/2020 21:09

If you call him Ren everyone will think you're huge (and slightly weird) Star Wars fans.

I would also have assumed Seren was a girl.

Nohomemadecandles · 22/12/2020 21:12

It's a girls name. As much as Helen or Doris or Angela or Jennifer are girls names!

littlemisslozza · 22/12/2020 21:13

Definitely a girl's name. I'm in England and know a couple. I know a boy called Sennen though if that's close enough? Or Rowan as others have suggested?

Chersfrozenface · 22/12/2020 21:14

Welsh has grammatical genders, like French, Spanish, Italian and German.

-en is a feminine word ending, for common nouns like 'seren' = star, as well as personal names.

So to a Welsh speaker a name ending in -en can only sound feminine. Anyway, people from or in Wales may well have come across someone called Seren, who will inevitably be female.

It might not matter so much if you don't live in Wales, but it's still like calling a boy Paloma.

BuzzingTheBee · 22/12/2020 21:15

Girl’s name

CodenameVillanelle · 22/12/2020 21:16

I know a couple of Serens in England, both girls. Don't do it

DougRossIsTheBoss · 22/12/2020 21:16

Totally bizarre to me
If you wouldn't call him Helen don't call him Seren

Everyone will think you could not be arsed to think of a boys name or were desperate to have a girl.

Diddlysquatty · 22/12/2020 21:17

Definitely heard of it
Know one (and nowhere near Wales)
And would assume female

lookdeepintotheparka · 22/12/2020 21:18

I know a few babies recently called Seren (not Wales) so I think increasing in popularity into UK. It's a lovely name but I would assume female.

How about Stellan?

ZoCho · 22/12/2020 21:19

This is really interesting, I didn't know thay! Thanks so much
