Seren for a boy?

I'm pregnant with baby #2, a boy this time (have a 4 yr old DD). Her name is very unusual (haven't seen it listed on any site in my extensive research this time!) but also not 'crazy'!
We like less popular names but more importantly want to love our son's name as much as we do our daughter's.
My DH is so fussy and says no to almost all my suggestions! The only name we both love is Seren.
I'm fully aware this is a 'girls' name in Wales (and a popular one at that) but in England it's rising but still unusual for sure. Anyway the sound of the name doesn't sound overly feminine to us (like Delilah or Sophia or something) and we'd like to use Ren as a NN.
Is this ridiculous? We live in England.

It’s very A Boy Named Sue thing to call the poor lad Seren. It’s a feminine noun and a very popular Welsh name - I know 4 girls called Seren.

winechateauxjoy · 23/12/2020 09:29

100% a girls name - never used in Wales for a boy.

midnightstar66 · 23/12/2020 09:40

I know a few serens- we aren't in wales but it's widely recognised to be a girls name here.

SpamIAm · 23/12/2020 09:53

There's not even a hint of unisex about it, it's 100% a girls name.

tigerlily20 · 23/12/2020 09:56

Do you definitely want a Welsh name? There are other nice names for boys. Seren defo girls name, very feminine to me. But what's gender nowadays.

Afon/afan - river
Brân - raven
Osian (welsh or Irish?)
Carwyn - beloved
Ioan - welsh for John

zigaziga · 23/12/2020 09:59

I suppose people call girls boys names all the time, it’s quite nice for it to be reversed for once.

QueenieButcher · 23/12/2020 10:18

@iwantavuvezela

How about saschen ...

It’s a girls name for me (Seren)

Yikes! Really don't do that. First thought was Sachsenhausen concentration camp

Seren is definitely, 100% a girls name so don't do that either!

YoniAndGuy · 23/12/2020 10:21

Sorry that's utterly ridiculous.

Your DH says no to everything? Well, for a start he doesn't get to do that and still be part of the process.

Tell him he can either start coming up with lists of names that he likes and discussing like an adult, or you'll name the baby. He does not get to sit there like a little Emperor waiting for you to offer up name after name for him to turn his nose up at.

Lots of boy names with the same sound. Agree that both Stallan and Soren are great. Unusual now too is Spencer. Also love Struan.

HarrietPotterska · 23/12/2020 10:24

Wren?

YoniAndGuy · 23/12/2020 10:24

Sennen is fabulous, and Sen/Senni is a pretty cool nn.

Nell96 · 23/12/2020 19:16

I think it's a really bad idea. Seren is a very popular name in Wales. I'm seeing it increasingly pop up in name lists. A good friend has just named her little girl Seren, and she has no Welsh links and lives in NW England. I think it's a name on the rise. Also, it just sounds very feminine to me, particularly when you know the meaning. Honestly, I think it would be a bit mean to name your little boy Seren.

BlenheimOrange · 23/12/2020 22:57

Stellan is another lovely one

calimommy · 25/12/2020 06:45

I find it slightly amusing that everyone is appalled at the idea of giving a boy a girls name when there are girls everywhere being called James, Dylan, Blake, etc. 😉

I know nothing of the name Seren other than what I've read here, having never come across it before. On looks and sound alone I think it is a nice name for either boy or girl. Obviously though meaning is important and you have to decide what the name means to both society and to you.

Lemonjlo · 25/12/2020 06:48

Seren is a girls name. Love soren or even Oren/Oran though

EuphieKat · 25/12/2020 06:49

Seren is 100% a girls’ name to me, so it would feel a bit like calling a boy Bronwen, for example. Like the suggestions of Sennen, Stellan, maybe Steffan?

Lemonjlo · 25/12/2020 06:50

No to sennen, at first glance it looks like semen

gerispringer · 25/12/2020 07:06

Unless you are Scandinavian I would avoid Søren- no one would pronounce it properly and it sounds too much like sorry.

Enko · 25/12/2020 16:54

I agree with this if you are not Scandinavian you can't pronounce Søren right (my grandads name ans a cousins name and dd3 has the feminine version of Sørine for her mn) however I do not agree it sounds like sorry unless that was meant to be how it gets said in English i guess I could imagine some saying it that way

As for Seren I also know of a male Seren but I do see it as a girls name. If you want unusual I dont think Seren will do it.

From Wikipedia

Seren is a Welsh female and male name meaning "star". It has become a common female name and was the third most common name for baby girls born in Wales in 2009; in 2010 Seren was the 5th most common name in Wales, and the 288th most common name for newborn girls in England.[1

shamus2020 · 27/12/2020 21:12

I know a boy named senen?

Honeyroar · 27/12/2020 21:13

What about Senna?

Brighterthansunflowers · 27/12/2020 23:24

It’s 100% a girls name, you would be ridiculous to use it for a son.

( I also hate it when people want to call their daughters things like James fwiw)

My first thought for an alternative was Soren but I see posters more familiar with it than me are advising against it

Marcipex · 28/12/2020 14:34

Please don’t, it’s definitely a girls name and becoming quite popular.
Sennen is also pretty awful, I wonder if l know the same one mentioned up thread.
It’s easily mis-read as Semen, as well as on purpose to tease.
Senna is a laxative, so no to that.

Remy is nice and a similar vibe.

Clarence nickname Ren?
