Madeline?

Wanted thoughts on this name- I loved the french books in childhood.
My friend insists she sees me with a Matilda but that’s quite popular and I’d prefer a name where they are the only one in the class.
My main concern is that despite the different spelling/pronunciation it might draw references to McCann.

I’m not pregnant yet btw, I’m TTC and a bit disappointed it didn’t happen this month so I’m thinking about baby names trying to keep my own morale up that it’s going to happen.

Nah, it's been ages since the McCanns lost Maddie. I like it, but would you pronounce it Mad-e-line or Mad-e-lin?

I prefer Mad-e-line. I think the McCann's kid was a Mad-e-lin?

HeronLanyon · 20/12/2020 05:37

Prefer the Madeleine spelling. Great name. Good nns. Congrats op

HeronLanyon · 20/12/2020 05:37

Oops sorry congrats to come I hope Grin

Oreservoir · 20/12/2020 05:40

I love the name Madeline.
There's always somebody who will reference a name to a well known person. Our adult dd has a fairly unusual name and it drew lots of remarks. We just ignored them.

Good luck with ttc.

Santababy56 · 20/12/2020 05:44

Love the name (and spelling) Madeline - gorgeous.

Not so keen on Matilda - gets shortenend to Tilly. Loads of Matildas around here at the moment and one of them is particularly obnoxious - hehe always puts me off a name...

August20 · 20/12/2020 05:48

It's a lovely name, you mention the French children's books so would you be going with the mad-uh-line pronunciation? Where I grew up it was almost exclusively Mad-uh-lin.

HeadlessGummyBears · 20/12/2020 05:53

I think Madeline sounds lovely. I prefer the mad-uh-line pronunciation as it reminds me of the cartoon series.

itstrue · 20/12/2020 06:03

I have a Madeleine. Still love the name 13 years later!

We never have had a reference to the McCanns.

We do get different people pronouncing it differently but it doesn't seem to bother my daughter.

And somewhat surprisingly it's never been shortened!

Hi yes it would be Mad- e line not Mad- e-lyn

Yes McCann’s child was Madeleine- Mad-e-lyn

Ah that’s good to hear! I love both forms of the. And, just slight preference nce for the French books as it gives me warm nostalgia!

My mum was going to name my sister Madeleine but got put off by the thought they’d be called Mads so that’s also good to hear it’s not been shortened!

i love Mad- e-lyn, but not keen on Maddie or other nicknames

joystir59 · 20/12/2020 07:16

Isn't it spelt Madeleine? Lovely name.

QuietlyExcited · 20/12/2020 07:21

I love the name Madeleine and wanted it for DD2. DH wasn't keen so we compromised on Olivia. 24 years later, still wish we'd called her Madeleine.

Plsv87 · 20/12/2020 07:23

Its a really pretty name, although the association is difficult.

FWIW I have a Matilda in Year 1 and she is the only one in her class. I also work in a secondary and there is only 1 in the whole school - appreciate this could change in a few years. Also her name is Matilda and never gets shortened to Tilly or anything else, we were just firm on it from the word go.

Good luck OP!

cliffdiver · 20/12/2020 07:26

We considered Madeline for DD2 (6), but vetoed it because of the McCann association.

PuppyMonkey · 20/12/2020 07:30

DD is a 24 year old Madeleine - I still love the name but she hates it and goes exclusively by Maddie. Confused

EileenGC · 20/12/2020 08:27

I like the name, both pronunciations and both spellings.

As to wanting your child to be the only one in their class with that name, you can never know. There are classes with only one Olivia but there could be three Jocelyn's or three Louisa's or something. I have an unusual name and I was the only one in my school (500 children), but there were 3 of us at one of my clubs, out of 30 girls. You can't know.

FestiveStuffing · 20/12/2020 09:21

I don't think you'll get the McCann association with the Mad-e-line pronunciation. It's a different name as far as I'm concerned. And yes, I associate it with the cute little French orphan and Miss Clavel.

emilybrontescorsett · 20/12/2020 09:53

lovely name.

diddlediddle · 20/12/2020 11:09

Yes the typical spelling is Madeleine... same pronunciation.

It's a lovely name and I think we're past the McCann phase with it now. But I would spell it properly.

TheNanny23 · 20/12/2020 11:24

@diddlediddle

Both are legitimate spellings and Madeline is the English version even though the French Madeleine is more often used, and the more English Madeline was used for the books I adored.

Madeline?

👌🏼 fair enough!

marypoppinsneedles · 20/12/2020 12:26

First thought was McCann unfortunately and the case still makes headlines news regularly.

Sweet name though.

twoticksvix · 20/12/2020 12:40

DD is almost 4 and Madeleine. No others in her preschool/nursery but we love it. We did consider the McCan connection but we still love the name.

DramaAlpaca · 20/12/2020 13:58

I like the Madeline version better than Madeleine, I prefer the pronunciation. I'm not so keen on the diminutives, but the full name is lovely.
