Half Indian/half English boys name

Luckyelephant1 · 18/12/2020 18:04

Not sure what we having yet but trying to think of names already. We have quite a few potential girls names lined up that fit the bill of sounding both Indian and/or English but boys names are so much harder.

I quite like the nn Ash but can't think what I'd like the full name to be! I don't love Ashwin and that's about all I can think of.

Also not Raj or Hari. I love Rohan but that's already a name in my close family so can't use it.

I like the name Vivek. It’s not an English name but it sounds like it could be, if you see what I mean.

Arjan?

ForestNymph · 19/12/2020 10:46

Aaron/Arun
Kiran/Kieran
Jay

We had this problem, we couldn't find anything we liked that fit both and in the end we went for English names. DHs family are fully Indian and some of them have names like Chloe, Daniel, Ryan etc so we just went with names we liked. I hope you find something Smile

Thank you all, so many fantastic suggestions. Whatever I like DH doesn't and vice versa Xmas Hmm and anything we both like still doesn't seem to be 'the one'. We both like Aaron but that's already a name in DH family too argh. Aryan is nice but don't like the connotations associated.

We are still leaning towards Ash I think but we both agree it should be a nickname rather than full name so still pondering what the full name could be!

Here's what we've thought of:

Ashok- nope
Ashwin- it's OK but not the one
Ashton- again OK but no
Ashley- too English and it's a girls name IMO
Ashish- bit old school
Asher- I love it DH thinks its nice but not the one . Also I think it's a pretty prominent Jewish/Hebrew name. It's so close to what we are after though but not quite there iyswim.

Asha is nice.

Also, I'd spell Aryaan like that, not with one a because then it looks like aryan, like the race of people.

yeOldeTrout · 19/12/2020 12:16

Dashiell -> Ash nn?

Peregrina · 19/12/2020 12:18

Kerpal -- known as Paul for short?
Vikram - Vik? Not written down people might think it was short for Victor.

BTW Idris and Dylan are Welsh.

NewbieManager · 19/12/2020 12:23
**@meera454* @Trailing1* all lovely names but still a bit too... indian (BTW I'm the Indian one out of me and my husband so I can say that 😂)

Kallum is interesting!

I really liked Kiran/Kieran but husband isn't overly keen on that.
@Luckyelephant1: “too Indian” WTF.

I’m Indian too.... seriously do you hate your culture so much that your child cannot have an Indian name? How will you cope WHEN your child experiences racism?

The time before your child arrives might be a really good time to reflect on how you will raise your son, and the values you will I still in him

Coldasfish · 19/12/2020 12:35

Ash is lovely! So is Asher.

Luckyelephant1 · 19/12/2020 13:53

@NewbieManager jeez this is a lighthearted discussion about names not how I'm going to raise my child, my Indian values are perfectly fine thank you. We are simply after a fusion style name. I don't need to answer to the likes of you who knows nothing about me.

Thanks to everyone else x

What a rude message that was, there's nothing wrong with wanting a name that translates across both cultures. Some people do it that way, some choose one culture for a first name and the other for middle, there's loads of ways of doing it, doesn't mean anyone hates their culture or anyone else's. 🙄

I know a male Ashley (white, public school, Christian).
Adam and Daniel mentioned above might be fine.

I live in probably the most Indian borough in England so more people in my sons' classes at school are Indian origin than not at times. We are white Christian and I picked old testament names. My parents picked kings and queens of England names which is a good idea as they do not date too much but obviously don't meet the Indian requirement. It is interesting how people do pick names. My daughter said as we also live in a very Jewish area everyone thought she must be Jewish (old testament name) at times given where we live and her first name, not that it matters.

nuggles · 19/12/2020 19:48

Hi @Luckyelephant1 gosh it's so hard to come up with Indian/English names right?

We ended up with names that I consider cross both quite well. Although now every single kid seems to have the same name as my son ha.

If it helps, we started off with a list of about 20 names either my DH or I liked, left it for a month, went back and shortlisted those. Then wrote them out and had them on display in our bedroom for weeks until we both liked one.

Go for what you feel comfortable with and with your heart.

Good luck and congratulations on the pregnancy :)

Ricky?

WorldAtlasOfTea · 21/12/2020 12:55

I asked a similar sort of question (I'm the English half though) and got some good suggestions. Might be worth skimming through.
