Names with cute nicknames

Really want a name that can have cute nicknames for a boy. So far we quite like Edison with the nickname Eddie or Bear. We also like Newton with the nickname Newt. Can anyone suggest any other names. Thanks in advance.

Reuben with the nn Roo/Reu

Miles with the nn Milo

August20 · 17/12/2020 09:15

Edison and Newton are surnames. Are you looking for surnames to use as first names?

Otherwise what about Christopher nn Kit or Philip nn Pip/Pippin?

PlantPotting · 17/12/2020 09:27

Laurence
Jasper
Kasper
Tristan
Nathaniel

HolyMusicalBman · 17/12/2020 09:54

@August20 I so quite like the original surnames that can be used as surnames
@PlantPotting I love Tristan and Kasper. What would all the nicknames be?
@galaxy9 I contemplated Miles

If you like the surname-as-first-name thing, what about:

Douglas - Dougie
Cameron - Cam
Sullivan - Sully/Sulli

Newt? I think your idea of a cute nn is very different from mine!

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 17/12/2020 10:58

This is an odd way to name a child. Their nicknames can't really be dictated before birth like that. Mine get called BearFace, Sausages, SuzyPiePants, Chipolata, Puddle, and whatever else comes to mind at the time.

Please don't call your child Newt Grin

August20 · 17/12/2020 11:11

Come to think of it was Newt inspired by Harry Potter?

There's a US politician called Newt Gingrich. It happens. But it's awful.

Exactly. Any name can be made into a shortened pet name and usually happens organically, not planned. DD has a three letter name and a multitude of nicknames that are mostly longer. Couldn't have planned them. DS is about 50% of the time his actual name and 50% Moo.

Edward = Eddie
Franklin = Frankie

HolyMusicalBman · 17/12/2020 16:30

It's not the only way I'm naming my son, we just want some other suggestions from what we have and we thought a few with cute nicknames are different from what we have so...

Newt in Aliens!
Just make sure the nickname works when the kid is older (and in school). Or it could just be a family nickname (a friend calls her son Lu or even Lulu for Lucas but I don't think anyone else does).
Most people I know with nicknames (and these aren't cute ones) like Billy and Jimmy reverted to William and James as it sounds more grownup and professional.

evenmoreforthemoor · 17/12/2020 16:42

How is Bear a nn for Edison?

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 17/12/2020 16:47

Newton most definitely can be a first name in Harry Potter at least

Personally I'm in the "nicknames evolve organically and can't be planned before hand" school of thought.

My DC are known as things like Pickle, Sausage, and Bobbeh Grin

Orphlids · 17/12/2020 17:01

Oh god, can’t people just answer the OP’s question without telling her she’s wrong for asking it? It’s fine if you don’t want to come up with a nn for your child before they’re born, but OP would like to.

Augustus, nn Gus
Arthur, nn Artie
Jasper, nn Jazz
Josiah, nn Joss

HolyMusicalBman · 17/12/2020 17:04

@evenmoreforthemoor Bear is a nickname for Edward, Edwin etc so it works for an Ed name
@Orphlids thank you! I love Augustus so much and I'm also a big fan of Arthur

Expectation management! Chances are any planned nickname will end up being hardly used anyway.

MrsBeltane · 17/12/2020 18:14

I've always liked Kit, short for Christopher.

If you've never named a human before you don't necessarily know that nicknames are more random and organic than you might imagine.

Bear is only a nickname for Edward because Teddy is a nn for Edward. Teddy isn't a nickname for every name that begins with Ed.

Obviously you can give him whatever nickname you like. My daughter was called gulub Jaman cos that's what her head smelt like but it wasn't because her name was Daisy.

Good luck with picking your name.

LuckyFlash · 18/12/2020 20:55

Lots of haters on this thread. There’s a difference between a cutsie pet name you organically give your baby and a nickname that friends and family can also use.

Op, I love Dashiell nn Dash but DH truly hates it so I had to let it go...

I actually love Newt but I know I’m in the minority!

star1459 · 18/12/2020 23:05

Christopher and Kit?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/12/2020 23:42

I don't know about "cute" nicknames, but apart from Bear for Arthur or Edward, there's also Wolf/Wolfie for Zev or Wilfred, and maybe Huggie for Hugh/Hugo?

Also old- fashioned nicknames (other than Kit and Pip as pp mentioned) - Hal for Henry, Cal for Charles, Jem for James etc.
