Regan/Raegan

I really like the name Regan/Reagan (not sure what spelling I like best) but when I mentioned this name to someone else they said it was the name of the girl in the exorcist.

Having never watched this film I had no idea, is this what you would think of if you heard someone with this name and would this put you off using it.

It’s the name of one of King Lear’s evil daughters. That would put me off, tone honest.

Xmasnutcracker · 16/12/2020 21:20

🤦🏻‍♀️ My phone autocorrected Raegan to Reagan so maybe on that basis i should go with Regan 🤣🤣

Yes, my first association with that name is the girl in The Exorcist. Also Ronald Reagan. I wouldn't choose it personally.

ShowOfHands · 16/12/2020 21:22

Shakespeare's Regan in King Lear was a nasty piece of work. I think of her first. Then The Exorcist.

Queenoftheashes · 16/12/2020 21:23

I like Regan personally. Very Shakespearean and the exorcist was pretty classic if not a bit long and dull.

Queenoftheashes · 16/12/2020 21:23

Everyone is wearing different coloured coats now

Queenoftheashes · 16/12/2020 21:23

Sorry wrong thread!

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 16/12/2020 21:23

Lear is pronounced Reegan. I have met more than one male teenager called this who pronounced it Raygen. One goes by Reg. So a few years ago I would have assumed girl but now I assume boy.

Respectabitch · 16/12/2020 21:24

I'd prefer the first spelling, and yes I would think of Lear's eldest daughter Regan, sharper than a serpent's tooth she is. I wouldn't hold that against a child though, I think it's fine in itself as a name, and the nation isn't really coming down with Shakespeare scholars.

DramaAlpaca · 16/12/2020 21:24

I think of Shakespeare first, but it's not a good association. Then an American girl I used to know who was named after Ronald Reagan and spelled her name that way.

Xmasnutcracker · 16/12/2020 21:27

I didn’t realise it was a Shakespeare name either, I think I must of lived under a rock 🤣🤣, that’s interesting about thinking it’s a boys name. I heard the name because of a girl that does YouTube videos and I’d never heard the name before so I’d just assumed it was a girls name.

American by any chance? Reagan is an Irish surname and there is a huge trend in America for using Irish surnames as first names

TicTacTwo · 16/12/2020 21:31

I would think The Exorcist then Ronald Reagan.

Xmasnutcracker · 16/12/2020 21:33

@helloxhristmas yes she is!

Raegan sounds too much like "ray gun" to my brain.

Regan is ok.

readinginthechair · 16/12/2020 21:41

This is my daughters name spelt Regan (she's in her mid twenties)
She hates it and often has had comments from people that it's an unusual/odd name.
However I still love it Grin

dementedpixie · 16/12/2020 21:45

I know a Reegan (boy)

pinkpetal2 · 16/12/2020 21:50

My sons called Reegan I wasn't keen at first but I do like it.

Regularsizedrudy · 16/12/2020 21:52

Ronald

ShrimpSymphonyofSeasonalSongs · 16/12/2020 22:06

Nasty Regan from King Lear and then the Exorcist. A colleague of mine has a daughter called Regan and those pop into my head every single time she’s mentioned

Chilldonaldchill · 16/12/2020 22:24

I think of the horrible daughter in King Lear - I think it's then a weird thing to call a daughter!
I didn't know about the exorcist.
I know two boys called Regan but I don't like it for girl or boy.

VenusClapTrap · 16/12/2020 22:43

I think Ronald. Not a very pretty name.

MercyBodle · 17/12/2020 00:25

I love Regan for a girl, and prefer this spelling. The Exorcist movie ref is neither here not there for me. I'm aware it's not a popularly liked name, but I still just love it, and would use it if I had a chance.

Highfalutinlootin · 17/12/2020 00:28

I think of Ronald Reagan, The Exorcist, then Shakespeare, in that order. All bad for a girl's name.

JamieFrasersSwingingKilt · 17/12/2020 00:47

I think of King Lear's horrible daughter. It also has quite an ugly sound. Sorry, it's a no from me.
