Just seen it mentioned on here in passing and it struck me as beautiful.

What are your thoughts on Muriel?

Terrible, Muriel.

Great film. Cool name.

QueefBee · 12/12/2020 18:49

No. I don't like it, sorry. I don't want to say more on case a Muriel reads it.

Bellybootcut · 12/12/2020 18:50

Love the film. Don't like the name. But if you do - go for it.

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/12/2020 18:51

No.

Yennefer19 · 12/12/2020 18:51

It was my nan’s name but I don’t particularly like it. If I was to use it though I would spell it Murielle. I feel like it looks a lot prettier.

timetest · 12/12/2020 18:51

Love the name Muriel.

SwedishEdith · 12/12/2020 18:54

Oh, no. There was one in Crossroads (sorry, I know ancient history) but it will always be linked to a dreary dim-witted woman, as I remember. It doesn't sound nice said out loud. Meriel is similar but sounds fresher.

YOU'RE TERRIBLE MURIEL

Always my first thought Grin
aureliacecilia · 12/12/2020 18:57

It's a family name for me but not one I'd use. Meriel is very pretty.

Fckingfuming · 12/12/2020 18:58

She'll change it to 'Mariel' in future, but then back to Muriel when she realises it's not working out....😁

Topseyt · 12/12/2020 18:58

I don't like it. It just seems a very "elderly" (sorry) name to me.

Others might disagree though and if you like it then go for it. It certainly isn't actually amongst the worst name suggestions I have ever seen and isn't particularly "off the wall." I just don't like it.

cremuel · 12/12/2020 19:00

I like it. It’s a Gaelic name, from the word muir, which means sea. So don’t change the spelling, or you’d leave that meaning.

Divebar · 12/12/2020 19:01

I very much associate it with ” You’re Terrible Muriel “ - sorry

How about Margot? Love that!

Clareypoo · 12/12/2020 19:01

Urgh no. Sorry.
Though I don't like the Elsie/Margot old lady name phase that we're in right now.

IndieRo · 12/12/2020 19:06

Definately no, it's horrid

CantStopEatingPie · 12/12/2020 19:32

It's ok.

I do prefer:

Meriel
Merla
Marina
Merryn
Meryl
Merle
Morwenna

Though :)

florascotia2 · 12/12/2020 19:39

Really nice meaning. (Bright Sea)
I once met a lovely French student with that name.
Meriel an ancient and equally nice version.

KristinaJup · 12/12/2020 19:52

Much, much prefer Meriel.

Absolutely adore the meaning "of the bright sea" - couldn't think of a lovlier meaning.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 12/12/2020 20:28

It's quite dated and sounds and looks horrible to me, sorry OP. As pp mentioned just a small letter change - to Meriel (if you want to keep the Irish origin and meaning) or the more modern European Mariel (like Hemingway) makes a big difference and makes it much more attractive and useable.

LilacSloth · 12/12/2020 20:32

Really, really dislike Muriel. Meriel is beautiful 😍

rc22 · 12/12/2020 20:39

I had a great aunt called Muriel. She was known as Mu or Mumu.

MooseBreath · 12/12/2020 20:48

Muriel is my grandmother's name. I don't like it.

ImAllOut · 12/12/2020 20:49

Chandler Muriel Bing.

Yika · 12/12/2020 20:58

I actually think it's lovely. Beautiful meaning and relatively unusual these days. Meriel is even nicer.
