Elara or Ellara

After spending months searching for the perfect baby name, I came across the name Elara and have fallen in love.

I know it's meant to be spelt Elara, but for some reason I think I prefer it with two L's

Just wondering what other people think?

Thanks in advance!

I prefer Elara - linked to Greek Mythology and one of Jupiter's moon. But if you prefer Ellara, go for that.

There's also Ilaria.

StripyTigerTail · 18/11/2020 13:37

I know a baby Elara and an Elora too! Think these names are in fashion just now. They're pretty names. Like Lara / Laura and Ellie combined.

I prefer Elara to Ellara, but wouldn't think much of the Ell- spelling. Whichever you like best really!

MikeUniformMike · 18/11/2020 13:38

I'd see Ellara and think it was like Ellery, but Elara more like Lara.

Ilaria is nicer.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/11/2020 13:39

I prefer Elara, both because I like the mythological link and because it look nicer to me.

I've never heard the name so my instinct is to pronounce Elara with the accent on the first a (el-LA-ra) and Ellara with the accent on the E. (ELL-uh-ruh) which is correct?

NameChange84 · 18/11/2020 13:50

It’s supposed to be Elara.

Ellara looks like ELL-uh-ruh to me rather than el-ah-ra and it’s not half as nice a name.

I’d only go for it if you planned on spelling it correctly. I know a beautiful baby Elara and really like it.

Mousepad20 · 18/11/2020 14:09

I'd assume ELL-ara at first look if two l's as opposed to El-AR-ah. I like Elara, no need for a funny spelling.

LemonsYellow · 18/11/2020 14:30

Elara is fine. Ellara would be pronounced differently.

happylittlechick · 18/11/2020 14:36

Stop trying to spell your kids name weird to make it more unique. It just makes you look ignorant.

MimiDaisy11 · 18/11/2020 14:44

I agree with the others that Elara is the better choice. It has the connections to the moon of Jupiter and the Greek connection. The double L could confuse people on how to pronounce it whereas Elara is clear.

It's a nice name and one I considered.

Peachbubble · 18/11/2020 15:26

I like the Elara spelling the best.

Firebird83 · 18/11/2020 15:46

Elara

VenusClapTrap · 18/11/2020 15:51

Ellara looks like a typo.

Not trying to spell our child's name "weird to make it unique" and we are certainly not ignorant.

Thank you to all other helpful commenters. The reason I was thinking about the double L spelling, was that I thought it might be easier to shorten to Ellie (if she wishes to). Completely take on board the point about pronunciation seeming different if there are two Ls :)

I think Elara will get Ellie too. Eleanor frequently does and it doesn't have a double L.

Chilldonaldchill · 18/11/2020 16:28

Elara looks and sounds much better.

Very good point! Thanks :)

I prefer Elara spelling.

YoniAndGuy · 19/11/2020 17:39

It just sounds like yet another vowel-start-blah-middle-a-at-the-end generic featureless slightly made up name.

Cbeebiesrehab · 19/11/2020 19:23

@YoniAndGuy helpful comment.

I prefer Elara. Lovely name.

YoniAndGuy · 19/11/2020 19:34

Yes, it is helpful.

NameChange84 · 19/11/2020 21:32

YoniAndGuy - your post has just made you sound extremely ignorant.

This name has been around since Ancient Greece, having its roots in mythology. From an Astronomy point of view, it’s the name of one of Jupiter’s moons - not made up in any sense!

Enko · 20/11/2020 09:20

I prefer the 1 L Elara very pretty name too

YoniAndGuy · 20/11/2020 09:58

Nope.

I'm well aware of the origin of the name.

I said it sounds like another made up fluffy vowel-heavy girl's name - because it does. The name isn't popular enough for the origin to be common knowledge. On its own merits, it's a bland and fairly characterless word which sounds like someone just wanted to try and make up a more 'yoonique' answer to:

Alannah
Elora
Ellisha
Amara
Alina
Elowen

and on and on endlessly.
