I like it.

Audreyseyebrows · 18/11/2020 12:19

I prefer Jolie.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 18/11/2020 12:22

I dont like either but prefer Jolie if thatsbthe pronounciation you want.

Joley just sounds like a nickname for Joleen. Both are horriblem

MikeUniformMike · 18/11/2020 12:22

Joely Richardson and Phil Collins's daughter.
It's fine @cloverbug

BikerChick91 · 18/11/2020 12:27

It’s ok. I find the spelling confusing too... it’s Jo-uh-lee rather than Jo-lee right? We call Angelina Jolie - Jo-lee though... although that’s not the correct French pronunciation.

Some people pronounce Joel as a one syllable name, others two - Jole verses Jo-uhl or Jo-el depending on accent. So I suppose it’s either Jo-lee or Jo-uh-lee or Jo-eh-lee...

Monstermissy36 · 18/11/2020 12:28

Joely was my name for DS2 had he been a girl... so I like it 😀 I also know a Jolene and tbh after the first 5 mins of knowing her never gave the song a thought.

It's a yes from me

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 18/11/2020 13:10

It's pronounced like Jolie, as in Angelina Jolie.

It isn’t quite. Assuming an anglicised ‘j’ rather than the French ‘zh’ (sorry, I don’t have a phonetic keyboard on my phone but it’s like the sound in the middle of ‘treasure’) most people will pronounce Jolie as ‘jo-LEE’. Joely technically has three syllables (although the middle one is very short) and the stress is on the first syllable, ‘JO-eh-lee’.

It’s very pretty as long as you don’t live in Birmingham or the Black Country, where it is much less pretty in the local accent.

MikeUniformMike · 18/11/2020 13:35

Most people seem to say Jolie as Joe Lee.
Joely is more like Jodie or Josie.

Rhymes with Holy

StripyTigerTail · 18/11/2020 13:40

It made me think Richardson and Angelina! Jolie obviously means pretty in French, but it sounds very different in a British accent.

It's perfectly fine. A bit different. Personally, I'd make it short for something (Josephine maybe). My small hesitation is that it rhymes with roly poly, but that's probably just me!

MikeUniformMike · 18/11/2020 13:48

It doesn't need to be short for anything,it's the feminine form of Joel

It reminds me of someone I know called Yael. Lovely name and she is stunning, but people struggle with the name. It's said as Ya El, hardly complicated. It's the same meaning as Joel/Joely

chipshopElvis · 18/11/2020 13:53

It's lovely.

An education for me. I’ve only ever seen Yael written down and assumed it was Yale Blush I’ve tried saying YaEl out loud and I can’t make it sound like anything but Yell in my stupid accent.
ILoveAnOwl · 18/11/2020 13:59

I teach one and she's funny, works hard, listens and is every way is generally awesome. Therefore it's a thumbs up from me based on my knowledge of knowing one other person with that name.

StripyTigerTail · 18/11/2020 14:01

It doesn't NEED to be short for anything, but I would make it short for something, as I like names with options. Not by baby and all that though 🤷‍♀️.

StripyTigerTail · 18/11/2020 14:01

My*

MikeUniformMike · 18/11/2020 14:47

At school there were Lisas and Bethans but few Elizabeths, but in my parents' and grandparents' generations the Bessies, Elsies and Bettys would nearly all have been Elizabeth. And my friend's Aunty Daisy was really Margaret!

I don't really see the point of middle names unless they are for John Smith or Catherine Jones (famous actress with the middle name) type names, yet on here they're a big deal.

The best nn is one like actress surname Williams first name rhymes with Minty, her mum is very famous - Dame, oscar for playing a queen etc. She is known by a unique name but her bc name is quite different.

DC1 has a name that is short for something but we didn't think of using the full version, didn't seem any point.

LemonsYellow · 18/11/2020 14:51

I like it.

Finty Williams and Judi Dench?! Are we not allowed to say their names on here on something Confused?

Jemimapuddleduk · 18/11/2020 16:31

Prefer Joelle.

User415373 · 18/11/2020 16:34

I know 2 women called 'Jolie'.
I think it's lovely like that.

LadyCatStark · 18/11/2020 16:40

I’ve never heard of it but I actually really like it. I think it’s work well in Australia where people are more laid back! No idea why people are telling you to change the spelling when it’s a real bame not a made up one.

LittlePearl · 18/11/2020 16:43

I prefer Joelle, or Jolie.

pilates · 18/11/2020 16:46

Not keen but I like Josie

Crispsareafoodgroup · 18/11/2020 16:48

My daughter (a teen) is a Joely and she’s never had any problems with her name. I don’t like the Jolie spelling but that’s just an opinion.

meow1989 · 18/11/2020 17:39

What about Joelle?
