What do you think? Will she forever be having to say 'with an E'?

Ideally I would like something with an Italian feel as I'm part Italian. Any other suggestions please?

Yes she will. Depending on exactly where you live.

If you do an advance search you'll find a thread from a couple of weeks ago about the name

No other Italian suggestions,sorry.

Alexandernevermind · 17/11/2020 10:22

My daughter has friends with an E and an A. Its pronounced by the vowel in each case so there isn't really an issue.

ellentree · 17/11/2020 10:24

It's a beautiful name and the Emilia I know doesn't have much of an issue with this - no more than Claire/Clare type names.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 17/11/2020 11:06

I love the name Emilia (much nicer than Amelia to me). Emilia is Shakespearean and so pretty. But I wish it was pronounced Emily- ah (with the emphasis on the "lee" sound instead of the "mee" ), I think the common pronounciation will be confused with Amelia all the time (especially as Amelia is such a popular name in the UK at the moment).

Other Italian girls names I love - Gaia, Antonia, Claudia, Livia, Octavia, Aurelia.

Helspopje · 17/11/2020 11:08

I have an Emilia (and an Imogen)
We’ve had no issues with the E/A thing but some odd types seem determined to spell it Emelia

ImaSababa · 17/11/2020 11:49

To me, Emilia and Amelia are very different names. Emm-ill-ia and Uh-mee-lia.

Whatsyourflava · 17/11/2020 12:02

LOVE Emilia
I also find the two names different @ImaSababa

Nell96 · 17/11/2020 12:10

I actually like Emilia a lot more than Amelia. I don't think the 'E' will be a problem - think of Emelia Fox. Other names you might like -

Eleonora
Elena
Roma
Serafina / Seraphina
Sienna
Lucia
Aria
Isabella
Bella
Antonia
Sofia
Amalia
Giulia
Carina

It's my niece's name. She's 10 and AFAIK the spelling's not particularly an issue. It's a lovely name.

Zofloratheexplora · 17/11/2020 12:27

It's pretty popular (there's at least 4 in my dad's school) when she's older it will be like Clare/Claire when I was a child. It's nicer than Amelia imp

Beanbag19 · 17/11/2020 12:58

Thanks for all of your comments. I didn't realise that it was becoming popular now, that does make me want to think again. That said, we chose what we thought was an uncommon name for our eldest and there's another one in the same year at school, so nothing is guaranteed!

@IamnotwhouthinkIam I love Livia but DH not so sure. Lots of family names in your suggestions, and same for @Nell96, which reduces choice.

I love Camila (ka-mee-la) - Spanish version of English Camilla (Ka-mill-ah), but has Roman origins. Also Camellia, from the flower. Both sound very similar to Emilia, but perhaps less popular.

There's also:

Viola
Ilaria
Alessia

yikesanotherbooboo · 17/11/2020 14:05

Lots of Emilias even if it is the less well known version. I think it is very pretty. My GG grandmother was Emilia born in south east London in 1838, no connection with 'abroad' and siblings with names such as Susan and Jane . I am a dyed in the wool don't make life unnecessarily complicated for DC person but I don't think that this spelling is a problem.

Beautiful name and the one I know pronounces it the way this poster suggests.
StripyTigerTail · 17/11/2020 14:24

How about Francesca? Not super popular I don't think.

Emilia is popular and it's similar to Amelia, Amelie, Emily, Emma, Emmeline etc. They end up all merging together a bit for me.

In my accent, even with major concentration, Emilia and Amelia sound almost identical. I used to work with two Emilias and for months I thought they were both called Amelia, as I hadn't seen their names written down.

Chilldonaldchill · 17/11/2020 19:54

Emilia is beautiful.

ThirdTimeLuckyIHope · 17/11/2020 20:03

My niece is Emilia and no one ever queries how to spell it, with an A it's pronounced differently so it shouldn't be a problem

june2007 · 17/11/2020 20:05

I work with an Amelia and an Emilia, tbh they are more or less prenounced the same.

dippyegg32 · 17/11/2020 20:08

I have an Emilia and never been an issue in terms of spelling. She's also the only one in her infant school

Helspopje · 17/11/2020 21:59

Y ours is the only one we’ve ever met, only one in her school so doesn’t appear in anybb BC way popular around here (London)

Firebird83 · 17/11/2020 23:52

It is getting popular, I know of two born this year.

Marcipex · 18/11/2020 00:49

Emilia is classic and lovely.
I don’t know any, but a few Amelias, which I don’t think is as pretty.
There have always been Clare/Claire, Robin/Robyn Catherine/Katheryn names, it’s really not an issue.

StripyTigerTail · 18/11/2020 09:00

Just to clarify btw, the women I worked with named Emilia were European, (not British). So they said it like Eh-meal-ee-ah. Do British people sometimes tend to pronounce it Eh-mill-ee-ah? I've never heard that pronunciation myself, but I honestly don't see how the first pronunciation is different to Amelia! My accent is mixed though. Irish, American, Scottish and various English accents. I also speak another (European) language, so maybe I'm a jack of all trades and herefore miss the finer points of British pronunciation!

NameChange84 · 18/11/2020 09:03

It’s EXTREMELY popular where I live and I’d avoid it for that reason. I taught in schools until fairly recently and every class at at least one of each of the following;

Emilia
Amelia
Emily or Emilie
Amelie

And there would often be several of both!
